Kohler Engines / Re: kholar command no start

Its worth checking the flywheel key again. I suspected a sheared key once so took the flywheel nut off and it looked fine. It wasn't until I lifted the flywheel I found it sheared.

Have struck this problem with a K series. Turned out to be a sticking valve due to build up on the valve stem. Might be worth a check.

Do ARC make rods for the 38 ci Vanguard. The piston pin appears to be 18 mm whereas the 30 and 35 engines have a 17 mm pin.

Your clutch won't disengage properly without those tabs that contact the belt. Fit them and I think your problem will be over.

Chassis / Re: brakes wont bleed.

The brake bleeder needs to be at the highest point. You may have to lift the rear of your mower to achieve this. That or take the caliper off, jam a scrap of metal between the pads, hold the caliper up high, with the bleeder facing up and bleed that way. Works for me.

Driveline / Re: bent axle

If you run your wheels close to your bearings the axle will bend quite easily.  If you run some distance between the wheels and bearings this will allow some flex in the axle. Centreless ground 4140 is your best bet for axle material.

I have only struck it once but have had a coil that, although it had spark, was faulty and the spark was happening at the wrong time causing a backfire.

I read somewhere if you have a bolt you are unsure of its quality you give it the salt water test. Throw it in the ocean and if it floats it is good to keep. ;)

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: arc brass weights ???
« on: December 06, 2012, 10:55:16 pm »
I have some experience with this setup. A standard ARC brass weight will fit the flywheel end of the crank. The PTO end is larger in diameter. I managed to get a brass weight from Rocket Ron that fits straight on. It is necessary to machine the eccentrics off, as previously stated, drill and tap the crank counterweight to bolt the brass weights on. I also got a billet cam drive gear from Rocket Ron. Apparently the stock ones are not very strong.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: Opinions on AVS
« on: November 19, 2012, 04:11:18 am »
The common problem with AVS engines is they blow a head gasket, burn a sump full of oil then self destruct. You will normally be able to salvage the piston and cylinder head but throw the rest away. Anything above stock RPM and you are taking a big chance. Synchro balance engines tend to be more reliable.

On my race engines I have the bores plateau honed by the experts. Anything else I hone myself using a three legged hone. I would only use a brush type hone to break the glaze on a bore in very good condition.

AVS engines seem to be less reliable than anything else even on grass cutters.

Vanguards are Japanese so all metric bolts.

I have found where fan covers or rocker covers have been swapped off other engines. Makes it tricky when trying to order parts.
