Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: OHV rod bolts & balance weights
« on: October 30, 2012, 06:08:28 am »
The engine serial no. you give is for a flathead engine. If you use a number like 282HO7-0334 E1 it will show a 28 cu in AVS engine. The rod bolts are Torx around T40 but not sure on this. You will need the correct bit to torque the rod bolts and its best to remove the camshaft to do this. You will need to turn the engine to a suitable spot to fit your torque wrench in to tighten the bolts.

Driveline / Re: automatic Transmissions
« on: October 19, 2012, 06:50:34 am »
I understand the riding mower transmissions are not good for racing mowers, but what is the reason they won,t hold up? Would any of them work in a governed class?
Thanks

Sorry! I may not have made it clear that I am refering to automatic transmissions

I ran a hydrostatic mower for some time using a commercial mower setup. The main reason it would not hold up was not due to lack of strength or horsepower. Heat was the big killer. I could not keep the oil cool enough and performance dropped off as it got hot.
Use the left search facility and type "hydrostatic race mower"

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: hot and cold exhaust
« on: September 28, 2012, 09:24:17 am »
went to race and we started having trouble with the motor breaking down. so we put 3 different coils on left bank of engine 3 new plugs  adjusted valves adjusted airspace on coil then noticed while reving it up the left exhaust was comin out cold let it idle and was as warm as the right side i know i always ask the stupid stuff so i thought id pile this on to has anybody run across this before
Try disconnecting the kill wires and run the engine. If that fixes it then there is a problem with the kill wiring/diodes.
If possible switch the coils left to right to see if the problem switches to the other side. Then I would suspect a coil problem.
If the spark, compression and carb is good I would suspect a lobe worn off the camshaft.

I think I read it on here. "If you cheat and win you haven't won anything. If you cheat and lose you are just a loser"

Its a good idea to clean the threads of the screws and throttle shaft with loctite primer to make sure the threadlocker is effective.

Yes use the stock plastic gear. My starter is spaced out .080" (2mm) using 2 washers. Any closer and the starter gear binds and chews out.

Only grind the lifter boss the bare minimum to get clearance. The lifters are hard and should be ground to get the correct valve lash.

Most of the parts I get from the U.S I get sent U.S. Postal Service which is a very affordable option. I deal mostly with ARC and Precision Cams.

You might wanna check to make sure the fuel inlet hose is not on the bowl vent pipe. This will make it flood which sounds like what your problem is. If not it might be a stuck float or needle valve.

Briggs Flathead / Engine mount lug
« on: March 15, 2012, 02:58:03 am »
Had an engine mount lug break off and leak all the oil out on a 28 flatty. I was told I should only use three bolts to hold the engine down. But which three? I intend to replace the sump. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: 14.5 Briggs Stock flywheel
« on: March 14, 2012, 10:17:23 pm »
I wouldn't use a steel key in a stock flywheel. They are aluminium for a reason. I had a Chinese Briggs clone engine with a steel key that disintegrated internally and locked up. The flywheel broke at the tapered boss area. Luckily it didn't come completely apart.

Coffee Shop / Re: Grass track

We race on grass only. The track is normally set out on race day. It will normally have a reasonable straight,a sweeper (curve), a hairpin and a right left "S". Grass is very tricky to race on.

Starters have lots of smoke in them
And like anything electrical or electronic it is important not to let the smoke out.
