NOT RESISTERS, DIODES, THEY ARE DIFFERENT. DIODES ARE LIKE A ONE WAY VALVE, YOU HAVE TO INSTALL THEM IN THE CORRECT DIRECTION.
OOPS....you caught me typing without thinking...read the op and then reiterated the resistor part...yes, you need diodes!

You could pick up the needed resistors I suppose

Pretty easy to read the rules and look through the builds on here first. You will find most of your answers in the build sections for chassis, and engine section for...well...engines.
For what it's worth, you won't find much help here if you start off saying you aren't building a mower for sanctioned events, but rather a back yard bruiser.   Just so ya know....otherwise, welcome to the best collection of mower racing knowledge!

Chassis / Re: 90's Murray build
« on: August 26, 2016, 07:29:07 pm »
I put it on the back burner too long, ended up starting a different build off a c channel frame.  Decided that would be stiffer and lighter than what I'd have to do to the murray frame.  If I were to do it all over again, I think I would have stuck with the pan chassis just for the fun of it.

Get some zinc additive to add to the (non-synthetic) oil, the oil this day and age don't have enough.  Before you start it, tip it which ever way to let oil run down the cylinder walls and to the valves.  Get it fired up and keep it off idle varying rpm till it's warmed up...while driving. Once it's warmed up start getting on it harder and harder, just like hitting the straights and letting off some through the corners.  Letting off lets it pull oil up to the rings better so it'll flush things out some. After say a half hour of that drop the oil while hot. It'll pry look like metallic paint.  Fill it back up with oil and additive and run it again, drain again and make sure there aren't any bad things in the oil.  I'd continue the conventional oil for the first race or two to help get the rings sealed along with the additive.  After that pick an oil and stay with it.  I've had good luck with Coolpower Green Medium in my ohv....your results may vary.

The search function two tabs over from the home tab works better than the one at the right.  Found your answer in less than sixty seconds.  Here's a link for your answer, look at reply #2: http://www.heymow.com/index.php?topic=7601.0

Go get a couple of tubes of corn head grease.  It does about the same thing as the bentonite grease, yet much nicer to work with.  Add gear oil if you wish.

rechecked your timing with an actual light, not just going off the hub marks?

Driveline / Re: Drive pullies...Aluminum vs. steel...
« on: March 19, 2016, 11:53:10 pm »
Aluminum better grip, better heat dissipation, lighter, wears faster, depending upon source higher$.  I believe EC can re-groove the ones they sell, maybe others.  Cast and steel are plentiful and reasonably cheap, will wear longer than the aluminum. Cast being the heavier of the two but grips better than stamped steel.

Might seem like duh, but to add to Brian's list, bring extra fuel. You might not need it, but the guy next to you may.

Well, in racing what can break will, along with other stuff that shouldn't.   Three years is pretty good on those parts, if I were you, I'd just order up new gears if your case is ok and not look back.
