Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: Vtwin vanguard flywheels

You?d probably have to run some sort of regulator.   As it will probably overcharge with the more RPM?s.

I?d run an alternator if you need reliability.

What are trying to accomplish?     Racing?   Pulling?    Why the need to charge?

Jake

Your best bet is to call them directly.

This topic hasn’t been posted in since 2015......

George, who took care of this post is no longer with us.  And I doubt anyone from EC is following this thread.

I’m sure factory is set at 3650 for max RPM’s.  I’m going to guess you will have plenty of power to run it at whatever speed you’d like.

Cool plan!  The old opposed will run a long time if you take care of it and keep the RPM’s low.  The carbs can be a pain but easy to work on.

Good part is that if it ever dies you can bolt in a big OHV single.  Those things are cheap and plentiful.

Post pics when it is done!

Is this an opposed flathead twin or a OHV v-twin?

I wouldn’t mess with a gear box.    I’d run the horizontal shaft for sure.

How do you plan on shutting the compressor down when it reaches pressure?

I wouldn’t mess with piecing together old engine parts if you want it to be reliable.  I’d go get a Harbor Freight Predator v-twin.  They are pretty good engines for the money.  Parts are available if you have issues.  There are even guys building aftermarket upgraded parts for them!!

Plastic won’t fly apart like a metal one would.  I haven’t ever had one fail.  I’ve had several singles that ran over 8k RPM

I’m not familiar with opposes twins.   But every other Briggs uses that plastic gear as the oil slinger.   Pull the Governor parts off of the plastic gear and reinstall

If removing the Governor you need a billet flywheel.

Check this out.   This is what is called a “hat”.

Unfortunately you need to move things around to get more than a 1/2” of clearance.  You need sone sort of hub to fit between the axle housing and the wheel hub.

You need a brake hat to offset the rotor over axle housing.

You may have to have one custom made.   I?m not sure if anyone is producing them anymore.

That is a factor.    Build it to what your buddies are running.   Get seat time and adjust.  It took me a few years to find the sweet spot.

Too high of gear.

Were you lifting for the corners?    Or were you holding it wide open all the way around the track?  Did you lift while it was still pulling?

You might have something starting to seize.  Creating drag.

Did it improve when you dropped gears?

Did you the clearance on the valve retainers to the valve guides?   I bet you are bottoming out the retainers out on the guides.   Check your push rods.  They will be bent if this is the case.

I made this mistake.  That cam has a lot of lift!
