As dumb as it is, no I haven't I was more or less going to get it clean and running and see what class I could afford to slide into since I'm just getting started and I have two other expensive habits one being a father of a 1 year old and to shooting. I budget in parts and supplies for this but depending on how much I enjoy it will determine how far I go. I also understand you get what you pay for but if there was a junker class I would like to start there and as my interest and experience grows then upgrade to another class or completely different mower. I live in south texas and googled for racing clubs in texas and found two but they are waaaaay up north which is financially not going to happen for me the rest of this year since I have a car payment but next year traveling wont be as big a deal since ill free up funds from the monthly auto payment.

Thanks last night i removed the motor, deck, belts, seat, electrical everything and then took the pulleys off the shaft of the motor. Tonight I can work on it longer because I don't have work on Saturday and Sunday so I plan on scraping off years of dirt and grime from the frame and wash it so I don't get covered in crud every time I lean on it. I also plan on taking apart the motor and getting all of the carbon off, do the seals on these things have to be replaced every time you take them apart or just when they are completely worn and or leaky? When I scrubbed the motor down with gas and a brush the other day I haven't noticed any leaking oil. I think for the time being I'm at a stand still other then cleaning and tightening I want to take out off the transmission this weekend so I can identify it and get a pulley for it or start planing a replacement in the mean time the frame feels solid but I read about strengthening and reinforcing all over the forum is there any particular thing i need to concentrate on?

:woo: thanks old goat I pulled off the carb took it apart soaked it in gas blew every hole out with an air compressor put it all back together with a diagram I printed (thank god for that) put it back on turned the key and it turned over for about 30 seconds  and nothing happened. I checked the plug it was dry I put a finger in the carb it was dry I almost thought it seemed too easy to just work so I cranked it again and though I screwed it up. I started back tracking my steps before and forgot to turn the fuel line back on with the little knob under the tank  :bash: after playing with the idle screw and throttle it was running great  for some reason when I go full throttle now it seems to miss every few cycles but keeps running but doesnt seem to  lose any power while in gear. I scrubbed all the dirt off and Ill check it tomorrow for signs of leaks but whats my next step besides finding a new drive belt?

Good to know I'm not alone LOL. If there is an angry wife group she can join on this forum let me know, that would help divert some of the heat I'm getting.  :D

Thanks old goat for the quick response, the fuel line itself does not leak I should have been more clear I disconnected it from the carb. and fuel drains out of the line there is no blockage of fuel to the carb. I'll clean that out tonight and see what happens.

Sunday when I was cleaning my wife's grandmas barn and found a Montgomery Ward TMO 33886B 36" Deck mower with 5 speeds and electric start. She said it was junk so I took it off her hands, last night after work I drained all the old fuel and oil for new fuel and oil and a new cj8 plug, removing the air filter and taking out the old battery and temporarily putting in one from one of the newer mowers we have I had it running long enough to do 3 accidental wheelies and ride about 1 minute then it stops. I wasn't surprised that it didn't run great or it probably never would have been in the back of the barn. My question(s) is what do I check / try to fix now since I really haven't done anything but fluids and a plug. I checked the fuel line to the carb. and fuel does leak out I haven't tried anything else since it was already 9pm I checked the plug and it looked good so I put it back in and started it up one last time and noticed that if I feather the throttle by hand along with the choke plate I can make it run wide open or even get it down to low idle but when I use the lever on the mower and adjust that way the motor tries to keep itself adjusted and quits after about 45 seconds. Motor is a 10 hp briggs 220707 0640-01 any ideas on the first thing to check? My background is computers that's how I pay the bills. I can change my own oil, rotate tires, and replace a belt so I'm not handicapped just never had to do any motor work and this seems like some kind of fun in a twisted :censored: you off way lol. I would like to get into mower racing this just seems like the first step to get to know mower components and motors better since I will be my own pit crew. Also my wife does not approve.  I have pictures if needed or wanted also if this is posted in the wrong section be forgiving it's my first post.
