Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: Briggs 31 Non Avs VS Avs Pistons
« on: July 15, 2017, 12:22:54 pm »
No the 31 non avs cam is fine, check your timing though. Flywheel in the right position? Camshaft lined up properly?

Do you have good compression with the new rod/piston/bore combination?

Start it up, make sure it runs well.

Take it to the race track, race.

Change oil after the race.

Two races on regular oil, switch to synthetic.

That's all I've ever done to break in any of mine.

GIVE RYAN A CALL, YOU WILL BE HAPPY!

I'll second this.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: Big time Stumble off idle
« on: May 10, 2016, 11:29:00 pm »
I have a similar setup to you, but significant head work, a bigger cam, and a 38 cu in motor. 1500+- altitude

.050 is way too big. .038 is much closer to where you want to be. I think I'm using slightly smaller than that actually. That will need to be the first thing you fix.

To try to fix your stumble, first mess with your idle mixture screws to get the highest rpm at idle you can without moving the idle adjuster. If that doesn't get rid of the stumble, may need to go up a size on the idle jets. Figure out what size you have, then go up one size with a tip cleaning drill bit set. But....you may be too rich at idle, then it'll take a smaller idle jet. My idle jets are about .025.

No two engines are the same, it's going to take some experimenting to get it right.

Briggs Flathead / Briggs 8hp Vertical vs. Horizontal Crankshaft
« on: March 26, 2016, 05:19:00 pm »
Aside from any differences in the PTO end of the crank, are the vertical and horizontal crankshafts interchangeable?

Trying to find a Model 19 flat head crank without the synchro balancer, seems that crankshafts out of horizontal engines are much more plentiful than vertical.

Because of our rules, I must use Briggs parts, so I can't just put on the ARC Brass weights.

Briggs Flathead / Re: 12.5 vs 12
« on: March 12, 2016, 02:03:48 pm »
Nope,just labeling

That isn't entirely true. Typically... the 12.5 is a newer engine with the bolt in the crankshaft to hold on the flywheel, and the counterweight eccentrics that need to be machined off when using the ARC brass counterweights. The 12 on the other hand, typically... has a nut to hold on the flywheel and removable eccentrics so that you don't need to machine the crank to use the ARC weights.

Those are the only differences that I know. May not be all of the engines either.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: Stuck ARC Flywheel
« on: March 12, 2016, 01:58:01 pm »
Got it off last night. Soaked it with WD-40 all night and day, went and got a new puller, tightened it down and with one hit of the hammer, it popped right off.

Don't exactly know what the problem was the other night, it felt like being stubborn I guess.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Stuck ARC Flywheel
« on: March 11, 2016, 01:34:44 pm »
I've been doing this for a lot of years.... Never have I had a flywheel stuck this hard.

Last night I fought with it for hours, finally stripped out the harmonic balancer puller I was using.

Think I've tried everything, impact on the puller, hit the puller with a big hammer, and even though you're not supposed to, heated it up with a torch. Still won't pop off. Key isn't sheared or anything like that. Usually I just tighten the puller and maybe one tap with the hammer and it pops off.

What did I do wrong? This is a flywheel I've had for several years and this time was only on for two or three races last year, then sat in my basement all winter. Put it on the same as I always do: line up the key, torque the nut with a little cordless impact I have that has a max of 100 ft lbs.

On a Vanguard twin if that matters.

Coffee Shop / Re: Mower racing tool box
« on: February 28, 2016, 10:45:52 am »
Any tool that you use to work on your mower at home, be sure you have one along with you at the track. if you have a generator or access to power bring power tools too. Be sure not to forget an air tank for changing air pressure at the track.

I probably carry too much stuff, but what you don't have always seems to be what breaks. I don't think this is a complete list of what I bring. In theory, you should have a spare of everything on your mower. That's if you want to be sure you can fix whatever breaks on the track.

The starred items, you'd be crazy not to have.

At least one extra of every bearing on your mower.
An extra of every pulley you use.
*Belts
*Spare roller chain cut to the right size, if you use it. Along with connector/half links.
Chain sprockets.
*Wheels/tires
Wheel hubs.
Tie rods/ends
Steering wheel
Throttle cable
Brake fluid/brake lines
Starting fluid
*Jumper cables/jump box
An assortment of bolts/nuts
Any small pieces that you use: clips, washers, throttle pieces etc. etc.

If you do your own engine work, bring spare top end parts. I.e. Rocker arms, pushrods, flywheel key, anything you can get to without splitting the engine. A spare motor is best, but I don't carry one. I wouldn't have enough time to change one if mine blew.

Coffee Shop / Re: What ATVS use 4 on 4 wheels
« on: January 11, 2016, 10:24:02 pm »
1996 Polaris Scrambler uses 4x4", and other year Scramblers.

But...like everyone else says, better to switch to 4x110.

I'm betting I order my wheels the same place you're trying to. Any year Honda TRX 450r uses 4x110 pattern.

pretty sure those wheels are 9in diameter and 8 in wide since they list back space at 3+5

Oops, I'm sure you're right. I apologize, please disregard my previous comment.

Are you looking for a 4x4 bead lock as well as a 4x4 non beadlock? The 4x4 beadlocks are almost a custom order deal. Probably be easier and cheaper to buy new hubs.

If you're looking for a 4x110, that's easy. www.rockymountainatv.com

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: Vanguard rockers
« on: August 01, 2015, 01:11:02 am »
The newer style stamped steel rockers will work, depending on the rpm you turn. Ran them for almost a whole season, then one broke. Switched to aftermarket "roller" rockers and never had a problem.
