Just getting started and here is the lawnmower we chose for our build and of course all we are using is the frame on this mower.

This should be interesting. You are building this as a front engine correct.
-
yes we are building it with the engine (20HP Vangaurd) in the front and we are flipping the frame upside down and yes it is going to be interesting
finished mocking up my front axle still needs to be be fully welded but here it is.

I will try to change the pictures. I don't know if they will be bigger or not I took them using my cell phone but I do plan on taking many pictures and many different angles

WOW!!!!! I have to ask what made you build a front engine mower out of a rear engine????? This is going to be a really cool build and a hard build. Really nice start and cant wait to see this thing done!!!

Well ive been looking for a MTD step thru frame for a while and had no luck and a friend of mine told me about this frame. If you look at it once its strip it reminds me of a car frame. So here I am and personally I dont think it is gonna be any harder than any other build actually I think it will be easier. I have been told these super modified/outlaws are harder to build than your normal build though. We will see.
-
Not really hard Jason but it sure requires a bit different thinking. Which when your used to the same basic builds makes ya think its harder.
-
Can you give me the stock wheelbase of the Mower please?

not 100% sure i think it was around 48''.

Nice to see more super modifieds out there. 8)

I also worked on my Jackshaft I still have my 3rd bearing to mount and to finish welding everything. Everything is only tack welded case I need to make changes for now.

thank you we try to make it better every time we build one we learn from mistakes we have made on other mowchines.
-
Silverdevil and I we also got a little bit of bracing for the 3rd bearings on the jackshaft and the rear axle and front axle (like I said ealrlier it is all just tacked in at this point waiting to make sure everything works out and we dont have to make changes)

Your well on your way, mine is a bunch of parts in a box LOL

Don't be shy on the jackshaft bearings, I would add another on the primary side so you have one on each side of the sprocket. When something goes bad its better to replace the chain or sprocket rather then everything including the jackshaft. Looking good so far ;)

Thanks Ryan I plan on run 2 bearings on the secondary side on each side of my sprocket but I dont think ill have enough room to get 2 bearings on both sides of the primary.

Got a chance to weld up some of the tack jobs i had on my bracing

What kind of weight is most of the super modified/outlaws weighing in at race ready? Just curious to know if im on the right track with my weight.
-
In Woo they were around 325lb average.. we have a minimum weight though.. My last too were around 350 lbs.
-

That all depends on the builder and how much hp they have to hook up. But the minimum is 275. Mine was around 300
-
I was aiming for around 350lbs and I should be between 340-360lbs with what I have left 2 add to my mower cause i weigh 245lbs myself and yes I plan on having plenty plenty of hp to tote me around the track.
I weighed the mower the way it is in these pics and it weighed 126lbs.

I hope you have the engine back quite far. I make my primary chain as short as possible since it is usually a smaller chain.
I ran a very long #50 as the secondary because it is WAY more forgiving then the #35 primary ( unless you have modified your clutch for a bigger chain)

my center line on crankshaft to jackshaft is 13'' with 35# chain and centerline jackshaft to axle is 17'' with 40# chain a total of 30''
-
Good to know. It is hard to picture where your engine is going to be right now.
I guess we will see soon. :D
-
Hopefully this weekend we will have the motor mounted so we can also get the steering in

Yeah my new machine is going to be a lot heavier than my last one, probably around 330. You could probably go a little lighter than 350 on yours since you have more body weight. When you get it setup I don't think traction will be an issue for your machine )

will try to get running boards installed tomorrow & start on rear fenders, looks like a nightmare, but somebody has to do it, then all that is left to do will be the steering

krptonite can't hurt me no more!!!!
Yeah it's in canada now. :D
But keep up the good work guys! Looking really good so far. I wish i was that far along on my new machine.
-
thanks tyler, now just putting fenders back together
-
Do you have an electric shear for cutting your sheet metal? I found it made it very easy to quickly trim out the pieces you need to make everything fit nice.
You can cut nice precise pieces.
Looking good with that engine in there.

That thing looks fast just sitting there. What are you using for a hood? and what do you use to bend and notch your tubing?
-
i havent decided on what hood yet but it will probably be mtd style. We use a grinder with a burr bit on it to notch the tubing and we had someone bend it for us.
here is the way the exhaust will be run it will be a 2 into 1 header in the pics we used water hose to see what we need to do it will run under the running board and the collector will come out the side.

i probably wont have time to work on it tomorrow, got to fix roof before it starts raining
-
Does anyone know of a place where you can buy the tubing and the manderel bends needed to make the exhaust? Ive found a few places on the net for the manderel bends and they are very proud of them.
-
Jegs has them.
-
Not sure of the price, but I believe Don at G-team sells them also. You can always go to your local exhaust shop and get them to make ya some random bends.

Ive been to all my local exhaust shops and they all tell tell me they dont have anything that small i think the smallest they have 1 1/2
-
do 1 1/2... shouldnt hurt you!!! i would do 1 1/2 to a Y and then 2 1/4 after the Y... it would sound DEEP...

it might not hurt me but I do wanna stay with the 1'' until the collector and then step it up. Im not really concerned about the tone(sound) of my exhaust I am more concerned about the performance.
-
I can get you the pipe, or build you a full set of custom equal length tig welded headers. 8)

sounds good what kind of ballpark price you charge for the equal length header.

ok

ok
and I still might go that route havent made up my mind just yet. I have a 1'' 2 into 1 equal length header on my bp and I like the way it performs. Anybody else have an opinion on what size pipe they would use.

I use 1 1/4" o.d, .060 wall mandrel bent steel tubing for my exhausts. Prices vary. PM me for info..

I use 1inch on my 12 flatty and it works and flows good and its not to big on the flange. Talk to your local exhaust guy and see if he would bend you what you needed if you had the material. you might have to throw in a couple extra bucks but it will be worth it to go that much faster.

We are not to far from being done with the chassis the parts we have on order should finish us up this weekend. Then we have to tear it all back down and finish welding everything in good. Then we gonna have it sand blasted and powder coated. After that's done it will be smooth sailing. I think the motor building will be the easiest part of this whole build.

Thanks we hardly ever see snow down here and I'm glad
I said this the other day and it suppose to snow here starting tonight at midnight just my luck.

the reason the little things take longer is cause we are doing a lot of looking and scratching our heads and hoping everything is gonna work right. :hmmm: :hmmm:

Alright today we were able to finish up a bunch of the little things that needed to be done. All we have left is to mount the front bumper and the nerf bars and then it will be disassembly time. We decided to take it off the saw horses today so we could see how it would sit on its 4 wheels.

hey Jason...im curious, are you running the 6 1/2'' wide front wheels or the 7 1/4''.....seems to me the 6 1/2'' may work better with the hoosier tire sizes, im getting ready to order some front rims and thought i would check what you are running....thanks, and build is coming along nicely!!!

we are running 6.5 wheels on front, & thanks for the compliment, everything is headed to the paint shop, hope to have it back by next weekend & start final assembly

This is an absolutely killer racer. Excellent job guys

We would never be satisfied if we didnt do those things.

For the great father son team coming up with a WAY outside the box approach. Can't imagine how you ever came up with the Rear engine frame idea, but it was brilliant!
-
Thanks Rooster the only reason we used a rear engine frame is cause we just couldn't find a MTD frame at the time and time was ticking away before opening day. The frame we used was FREE so we ran with it
-
That rear engine frame was almost perfect for this build. Good job guys.

Well we got the motor built and just sat it in place we just need to bolt it down wire it up,run the throttle linkage, bolt on the exhaust and maybe we can here a little rumble.

Somebody is very good. I want one of those.
-
Very, very nice! What size is the motor? Will it get too hot with the shroud being cut off? I was thinking of boring two holes in my shroud and making short intakes so the carbs are outside the shroud, or isn't that neccessary?
-
Does someone have an english wheel at your house for all those nice bends?
-

thanks George I can make you one if you serious
-
I would not have asked if I wasn't serious..... I am tired of breaking the plastic lenses. It can be flat or diamond plate I ain't pickey...I have tried that so many times and runied some good aluminum plates.

I wished we did but all of our bends are done the old fashion way by hand and sometimes a little bit of heat
-
WOW... you guys are talented...!!!

We finally took it off the saw horses and took it to Dixie Outlaws test and tune today. I have drove alot of fast mowers but I have never ever drove anything like this mowchine it was like a Cadillac and the others Ive drove a Pinto. It handles so good it feels like you are in a stock car or something and more power than I believe I will ever use the track was pretty rough for all the other mowers but it never bothered me at all. I was VERY IMPRESSED with the setup of this class of mowers. Words dont describe the feeling I had today on this mowchine. I have some more pics I will post later and a little short video from today.
-

If yall guys think that mower was fast by itself on the track, when you get two of them like
that, you will flip your wigs.
It looks good, and your initial handling was very good.

-
Good deal Bill. Glad I was able to help.. Go get em tonight. Let me know how it goes.

I only wished these machines will look good all the time. It has a couple of battle scares on it and to top them off I rolled it over last week it looks terrible gotta replace the hood and fenders before the ALL AMERICAN. Can't wait to run with the best of the best.
-
I did not see it but you didn't just roll I was told you barrell rolled it. Won't be no more inside berms thats for sure. Glad your ok though. I AM Still pretty tender on my right side.

. I'm ok but leg is killing me it has a bad bruise about 8 inches around. I'm more worried about getting my mower pretty again(lol)
-
Wow sorry to hear about the crash.
I have been wondering about these machines in that situation though.
Did it eject you when it rolled?
-
Yes it did eject me. I landed on my head thank Goodness for safety equipment
-
Hey so do you use a centrifical clutch on the horizontal shaft setup? How do you shift?
-
Hey so do you use a centrifical clutch on the horizontal shaft setup? How do you shift?
Centrifugal clutch doesn't care how it is oriented.
Most of the super mods I don't think are running transmissions, so they don't shift.
If they do have a tranny, you just let off the gas and shift, just like with a twist clutch.
-
We do run a centrifugal clutch. If you did have to shift you wouldn't have time because of the speeds you running you can barely blink before you are in the next turn.
-
Check your type of clutch. Premier snd some Noram have the right rotation are they will be jerky.
:bash: Read the instuctions. :bash: It have to me.
-
Have y'all got it back running again after the crash? And is the any picture of the aftermath?
-
Yea we got it back together but we have not repainted it yet.
-
Cool
-
