Briggs Flathead / New Flat-Head build...
« on: May 05, 2010, 09:41:46 pm »
Im going back to machinist school to finally get my degree and need a new project. Since I have sold all my pulling stuff I have decided to start collecting some odds and ends for this project since the motors seem to liter the world today.

Project Description: Building a Stroker / 10HP Using 11HP Crank.

Now, I know people are going to start bashing and stuff about my trying this. Saying that it can't be done. Thats fine, But I need a new project so I can do some stuff on the CAD machine.

Now, I have done some math in the process and here is what I came up with and why I have said it will work.

10HP Deck Height: 7.643
11HP Deck Height: 7.6499

In order to find Deck Height (Or Pop-Up)- Measure from TDC and add ***

1/2 Stroke+ Rod Length+ Compression Height+ ***= Deck Height

1.3125+ 4.8695+ 1.436+ .072= 7.69 Deck Height

7.643 (10HP DH)- 7.69 DH= .047 Pop-Up

So, This says to me, That I will have some pop-up but not enough to make a difference. This will allow me ample clearance for the factory head and the plug. One thing that I will have to check will be to see if the crank will clear the inside of the block of the 10HP. Sometimes the crank can hit the side and I may have to mill out a chunk and either weld in or replace with a cover.

I have some other ideas in my head that I am throwing around, but I'll post those up a little later after I get those down on paper.

Briggs Flathead / Electrical help...
« on: May 02, 2009, 09:14:39 pm »
Ok,

I just wired up my craftsmen mower for a test run of the engine and the starter seems to be very sluggish. I checked all my contact points for volts and I got 12.45 everywhere I checked including the starter. When I would hit the switch it would spin but very slowly and then stop.

I am thinking that I have a bad starter any other suggestions it might be?

Briggs Flathead / Custom Built Cam Grinder
« on: April 12, 2009, 09:47:38 am »
Ok,

Here is the start of my Custom Built Cam Grinder...

I am building this machine to basically cut the base circle down and use extended lifter. Now I am using 5 hp cams for testing because I have a abundance of stock cams and tons of blocks and engines to test on.

First-

Here my initial setup- This is the back half of the cam setup that will be detached from the hole setup in order to fit the cam in the jig per say.

Ok now this is the coupler which holds the 1/2 inch steel rod by a set screw (right hand side) and also holds the cam in the left hand side. This is a piece of mild steel drilled out to 1/2 inch and fits the camshaft perfectly. In order to hold the cam in I drilled and tapped the metal for a set screw (Same with the 1/2 rod) so that I can turn the cam back and forth along the grinder to cut the base circle.

Now the connecting rod I used is just there for a handle... Also the heim joint will bolt to the metal in order to hold the jig to the base.

Back half with the cam attached....

Now for the front half I had to machine a peice out of Aluminum. I am not quite done yet because I ran out of brass Friday and could order any until monday. So I still need to make a bushing to go into the peice of aluminum.

Aluminum piece fitted to 3/4 heim joint...

What the complete cam jig would look like complete...

More to come later once I get some more Metal in next week...

Briggs Flathead / Crank interchange
« on: February 14, 2009, 10:01:32 pm »
I have several blocks here with the Old Style cranks with just the counter weights and nothing else and I have some of the new blocks with the dogbone style counter weights. (The big thing that hangs off).

Now If I wanted to use the new style crank with the dog bone in a old style block I need to install on of those stubs for the dogbone to slide onto. The older blocks have the correct hole there for doing so but doesn't have the actuall stud.

Does anybody know If I can pull the stud out of on of the new blocks and install it into the old or do I need to machine one and press it in?

Briggs Flathead / Basic wiring
« on: February 14, 2009, 12:01:44 pm »
Just a quick question...

I am wiring the machine as I type this and it won't start. You can hear the soleniod click but it wont turn over. I checked averthing to make sure it had power. The battery is brand new and so is the soleniod...I am beggining to wonder if it is the starter...

What do you guys think? It's got me stumped...

Briggs Flathead / One Peice Carb Air Filter Adapter
« on: February 08, 2009, 06:40:57 pm »
The title says it all...

I have been working on the mower I just bought and needed a air filter adapter for it and noticed there wasn't one made so I made one on my new lathe I bought...

As you can see it turned out quite well...I did not have a boring bar to finish boring out the hole in the middle but will get one this weekend to finish up.

Here it is mounted (Just sitting) on the carb. Now as for the three small holes those will be gone when I bore out the hole in the middle.

Also the little allen screw in the bottom of the carb to stop gas will be replaced. I still need to get some threaded rod to go down in there are up through the filter and then the top will have a little nut that will tighten everything together...

Would like to get some feedback from guys running the same carb...

Briggs Flathead / Cam and Lifter questions...
« on: February 04, 2009, 08:27:38 am »
I am not totally sure about this BUT,

When you have the base of the cam ground .100 do you need to make a set of lifter .100 longer correct?

May be a stupid question but I was not sure...

Briggs Flathead / Briggs Questions
« on: January 19, 2009, 08:48:48 am »
OK.

I have a couple questions for you Briggs guru’s out there.

First, Can you run dual valve springs with a stock cam? Is there any need? What else does it help fight besides valve float on an ungoverned stock engine?

Second, I have a Briggs rod that came out of a 12 HP Vertical shaft. This engine was a new motor with the dog bone and big weight hanging off of the crank. Here’s the catch- It’s a flathead BUT, the connecting rod says it is from an OHV engine. I have some pictures below of the rod can anybody tell me if this rod is the Strong OHV rod that holds up to 6,000+ RPM’S?

Last question for you all, In order to find rod length can you measure the rod from the top of the Wrist Pin (Closest to the piston), to the bottom of the Rod Journal (Crank Side). Now once you get your total can you measure the wrist pin and cut that in half and subtract it from your total and do the same for the crank journal? Is there some other way I may be missing here?

Kohler Engines / Intrest in Billet Connecting Rods
« on: November 27, 2008, 10:34:48 pm »
Hello All,
I am doing a survey of both the lawn mower racing crowd and the pulling croud on what kind of "cheaper" but yet just as strong parts for you kohler engine.

I would like to know the intrest in making billet connecting rods for kohler that would be a cheaper alternative for the racer rather the Midwest Super Cub and Lakota.... ECT...

For vertical shafts:

What engines? What are the most popular engine raced? What kind of intrest here?

ALL RODS WILL HAVE BEARING INSERTS IN THEM!

For Horizontel Shafts:

Yes, I know parts are already made BUT I have a way to make a "cheaper" alternative here. The rod will still be made out of Billet Alum. 7075 T-6 Metal here.

ALL RODS WILL HAVE BEARING INSERTS IN THEM!

The rods will not start R&D Until next year possibly by the end of January! So please let me know you intrest in these rods....

Price wise I am not sure yet for I do not know what metal will cost me and or the amount of labor/ CNC time it will take...

Thanks,

Kohler Engines / Compression Ratio's
« on: June 01, 2008, 06:21:11 pm »
How do you figure out compression ratio's? I was wondering so I can make sure I would be safe to run on pump gas still.
