George how many hp do you think a flatty punched out to 31ci with cam (alt212) would put out?

sounds to me like i have a lot to learn and the only way to know for sure is to do it the old fashioned hard way. trial and error. every motor is different and i just gotta tune mine to do all it can. got a buddy with a dyno built for atvs. with me being new to this sport i guess i better call for backup. Anybody ever put a 28 flatty on a dyno? im curious to know what kind of hp they are capable of.

any recommended ideal range as far as performance is concerned? and i also had to add the fuel shutoff to pulse line which helped a lot but it will still stall on occasion.

i think i need to bring it up some because it will die occasionally if i rev it a little and let off completely in neutral. never had any problem while moving and in gear. probably only because momentum just kept it turning until i got back on throttle. so should i shoot for any number in particular or is it just personal preference here?

got it running pretty good except for the fact that sometimes ( i would say one out of five) as it comes back down from a good rev while in neutral it will die. when it doesnt die it comes down smooth and quick like it should and planes out around 900 to 1000 rpms. itll sit there and idle all day with no black smoke but the exhaust will be pretty rich. i think i am getting pretty close to the mix my motor wants to run but just dont quite have something right

well guys i guess the carb was the problem after all. i took it off one more time and went over it with a fine tooth comb, twice. i never did see any trash but evidently there was a speck somewhere. had one of my old mechanic advisors to check compression and he said it was excellent. dont know the numbers though. evrything is running smoothly now. only complaint is a pretty hard stumble off idle if you get too aggressive with the throttle. if i squeeze gently and gradual it will rev to the moon smooth all the way to the top. any advice on fixing the stumble would be greatly appreciated also. thanks again guys

i already tried cleaning the carb, even tried a different carb altogether. results were almost identical.  i checked the flywheel key just a little bit ago and it is fine. also checked for leaks in the intake, checked the plug and coil, made sure ground wire on coil wasnt interfering, checked the fuel pump filter and tank cap. the only problem i found at all was the bottom crank seal is seeping a little. im running the precision alt212 cam and i read somewhere on here that intake clearance should be .014.  right now it is at .006. does anybody know the proper clearance after cam install? and can somebody please tell me what i am overlooking on my motor......i know it cant be anything thats too major because it wasrunning fine just yesterday

Briggs Flathead / built flatty 28ci w/ problems

This is my first attempt at posting anything here so please be gentle! just finished a28ci flatty race build. everything went smooth during the build and the first startup was good also. Breakin went as planned as well. Shortly after break in motor started having sputtering and stumbling issues. Now won't idle but will run if throttle is cracked open slightly. Have cleaned carb, checked clearance and found exhaust to be at about .017 . Could thus be causing all my trouble?
