Title: New "Turf Stock"
Post by: Zippy 13N on October 16, 2012, 11:24:27 pm: This is the newest mower I am building to run at our track in arkansas. The class is called "Turf Stock". Its a really fun class because it is from what I have read kind of like a limited super mod. So here are some pictures. Its not completely finished but it's getting there. Gotta clean up some lines on it to make it look smooth finish up some other details and paint it but this is what I have so far.

Post by: Zippy 13N on October 16, 2012, 11:37:59 pm: No I wish hahaha we have to run a transaxle no straight axles and it is literally as close to the top (bottom, its upside down) as it can get without sitting on it. The transaxle can have gears removed but it has to be a fastory production transaxle with one forward gear and neutral so it has high and neutral only. It works kinda like a sprint car you cant shift it in gear with it running or it will pretty much shatter because of sudden shock so we have a clutch. mash the clutch put er in gear and take off haha

Here is the frame just boxed out with tubing and the frame rails. (note the ugly welds and brackets at the rear of the frame were removed after the photo, they were on the rails when I got them.) Now it has a cross brace to support the clutch and two cross braces and two foward braces in the front for motor and steering mounts.

I built both header tubes from the oppy to the collector the same length so there are some crazy bends and things that are going on so here are a couple of side shots of the headers so you can see how the clear the steering. You cant see the bends that well.

Post by: Zippy 13N on October 22, 2012, 10:46:11 am: Test drove the mower for real for the first time on the track this weekend. It drives amazing! I took the dual carbs off and turned out that wasn't even my problem. It starts poppin like it runs out of fuel when I set it up in turns. Tried different carbs and some were better than others but still not right. I'm going to turn them around so the main jet will be on the outside side of the carburetor. Anyway mower drives great! Ill post more pictures later.

Yes I'm going to take more pictures when I take it apart to paint it. I'm making the setup for new rear brakes right now. I have a few more things to do then I'm going to paint.

Thanks guys its been a lot of work but its been worth it!!! Still having carb issues tho I put another fuel pump on it because the stock one isn't filling the bowl up fast enough so I had one from my jr. dragster I stuck on it I just havent had time to try it on the track yet. It runs out of fuel in the turns and the guy at ec told me to try anding the other fuel pump to it and try. May not be the problem but it started doing it on my old mower too after we changed the tire rule and got faster so I think the fuel is going away from the jet.

I haven't started on paint yet because I learned on my first mower to get everything right and then paint so I am still trying to get some things right and I still have some things to add and do welding on. Like the nerf bars and things of that nature but it is still coming along pretty nice now that I got my carb issue worked out. I got to make a good test run on it today with the carb running GREAT!!!

I would have like to show you a picture of the test run. Sorry, but I had short sleeves on, and that is not allowed. If I do it again, I might get a vacation..... good thing, the COOL Moderator caught it this time.

Ummm the rules are kinda hard to explain but the biggest ones on chassis is min wheel base max width and it must have a transaxle which really adds to the fun of building LOL

NH Mowster the hood is 2012 craftsman hood. I ordered it brand new from sears cause it was short which fit my design and it is really wide which works great with the opposed. And I liked it a LOT LOL

Since I was the one running the mower I couldn't take any pictures but my girlfriend wanted to make a few laps so I hooked up a throttle stop and let her have at it. I think she had more fun than me!!!! She has no driving experience in or on anything other than a regular car and she had no problem driving it. She said it drives good but the steering is fast! :D I thought that was a pretty good complement for some one with no racing experience to be able to handle it smoothly.
Here is a picture of her riding it. O and Marc she has on all the gear unlike me with a short sleeve shirt :bash: Hahaha thanks again buddy!

If you have the beta version, go back to the original version of Photobucket.

She would hurt herself! She thinks she is indestructable and that if I can drive it she can hahaha What she doesn't understand is that I have been racing for a LONG time! Im ready to make a few test laps with the new flywheel but the track still hasn't dried up. Got that drain in now tho so the water should run out good!

Post by: Zippy 13N on January 22, 2013, 11:17:48 pm: I know the build section is here mainly for people to share their ideas to help out other people and I didn't think I had any pictures of how the chassis is designed on mine when I was building it and I still haven't found any pictures, but I am working on another one off of a jig identical to mine. Other than being 2" longer to compensate for the 6' 5" guy that will be riding it. I did find a couple pictures of it to share before the square tubing motor mounts are added in.

Notice how the engine sits down low in the chassis where the tubing is dropped down. Helps lower the center of gravity an inch lower i believe is what it is and it also make the chassis a lot more ridgid due to it being on a seperate plane from the rest of the tubing. All of the mowers must have a stock frame/rails (of course) but the frame rails are not put on yet on this mower. I do all my measurments on the frame and sit it out of the way until everything is welded to the chassis. (Makes for a lot cleaner work and not the hassel either).

This is the base chassis for all of my mowers. The only main difference in them are the lenghts to fit the driver. You can kind of see how the tubing is bent to drop the engine down inside the frame.

Here is a view from the front with some wheels and tires stuck on it. I know the camber is off they were 3/4 hubs and this guy wanted 5/8 spindles he just wanted to see it with tires and wheels on it, but it is a pretty good view of the motor mount

Its a really fun class everybody around here really likes it. If you were to compare it to anything as in cirlce track car racing i would compare it to an open modified. They are really fun to drive haha :woo:

It's built right, it has bearings and all so I have a buyer for it for another class we are starting up this year. Thanks for the comments everybody hopefully something on here helps somebody.

If you take pics with your phone, you can send them directly to your photobucket account with it. That's how I do most of my stuff.
