Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Vanguard Question.
« on: May 05, 2009, 08:22:00 am »
Ok heres the problem....

I am having trouble with this thing cutting off coming out of the corners.

Sometimes I think its because of bumpy tracks, this seems to be when it does it the most.

But on the same token I have had it do it on a pretty smooth track as well. Most of the time on a smooth track it looses the throttle response off the corner. (Kinda like a quadrabog).

The carb hasn't been "worked" but has the jets bored and is and has been super cleaned.

Now heres the the thing I can run sometimes 4 or 5 laps before it does it, then when it does cut off, I can start it right back up and take off.
And it seems to always do it in the same corner once it cuts off and will do it everytime. In other words I can restart and run all the way around the track until I get to the same corner again and it will die again.

It acts like its starving for fuel because if I hold the throttle open it won't start. If I don't touch the throttle until it fires it will start pretty fast.

I have talked to Mr Herrin and he suggested coils might be going bad. I have a set of coils and I will replace them. ;)

I just want to see what kinda of suggestions you guys have.
I have been fighting this problem off and on now for over a year! About tired of it. :bash:

Has anybody else ran into this problem?

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Fuel pump?
« on: October 01, 2008, 01:44:42 pm »
I am just curious about the length of the line from the Valve cover (Twin engine) to the fuel pump or the pulse line.

Does the length have anything to do with  how the fuel pump works at higher rpms?

I thought I read something about this somewhere but I can't find it. Or maybe I was dreaming.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Fat, Rich, Lean, mid, low, high?????
« on: June 05, 2008, 10:26:45 pm »
Ok I give up  :( I have never been real good with Carb adjustments, I mean I know what to do, but I guess I don't have the ear for it,kinda like tuning a guitar by ear.
So when you are adjusting the carbs low side what are you guys listening for?  Do you run it  or them in till the motor nearly croaks and then back em back out 1/4 or 1/2 turn??

I have heard to tune your carb till the plug runs brown, not white (lean) or black (rich), how is this achieved?

I have heard guys talking about adjusting for low to mid... mid to high... How???

I am swallowing a little pride on this but I have never been confident about my carb adjustments. And I am sure there is alot of members here that would like to know as well.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Starter?
« on: February 29, 2008, 10:37:09 pm »
I know the Briggs number is 808726 but does anyone know what the Nippon Denso number is? I got a friend that owns an auto electric shop and get just about any starter you need but he can't cross the briggs # to denso. I am wondering if Briggs has all rights to this starter.

Chassis / Steering Wheel??
« on: January 16, 2008, 10:10:46 pm »
Right now I am using a 12 inch steering wheel, but after the two 20 lap features back to back, at the big race in November, I am thinking I need to go bigger, or get bigger arms! I am curious to see what size wheel everyone else is using, ie what diameter, and maybe name brand and where to find them.
