Mower Engines & Parts / 2 ARC Vanguard Flywheels and a cam
« on: April 06, 2024, 09:32:33 pm »
Hey guys, not sure who's left here but i have 2 Vanguard flywheels with NO HUBS as i destroyed them removing the flywheels. The threads in the aluminum seem decent enough on them. $100 each plus shipping from 18011.

I also have a takeout cam which is a regrind of a stock cam +100 lift. Typically called a Bandolero/Slingshot cam. Its been in my basement so it needs a wire wheeling to clean up the surface but was only taken out during a spec class rebuild. $75+ ship

PLEASE EMAIL ME at coolredjeep@aol.com as i dont think i'll check my PM's here often.

I have a cam out of one of our 35ci sealed engines from rebuild time. I measure base circle at ~.870 and lift at ~1.170. These make power in our engines at about 5500rpm and torque peak around 4200. We run them 6400 peak all year. I've sold them in years past to very happy golf buggy guys.

Email me for a quicker response coolredjeep@aol.com

$120 + cheapest ground shipping.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Grass Cutter Model 31 sounds choked down
« on: August 18, 2020, 08:23:45 pm »
I have a really low hours 18.5hp Model 31 on a mower that had some random smoke issue that i was told was probably a head gasket. I replaced it and put a chinese carb on since the solenoid leaked. Beforehand the motor ran fine and sounded strong and it also ran ok right after the head gasket install once i got the carb tuned ok. The issue i have now is that under a load (like any time the PTO) is on you can audibly hear it "snorkling" through the intake and its noticeably short of 3600rpm. I tried with/without air cleaner, rechecked the valves, torqed the head, even removed the muffler since it was like there was a restriction and it will run full throttle unloaded but just lacks the loaded rpm. It idles ok so i dont suspect a head/vacuum leak. It will actually idle so smooth that it will chug at like 400rpm like a hit and miss engine if i get it that low.

Coffee Shop / Briggs Model 31 random smoke
« on: September 26, 2019, 01:07:39 pm »
I just inherited a grass cutter with an 18.5 ELS Model 31 on it. I’m plenty familiar with Vanguards but this is strange to me with this thing. The oil level looks correct and it runs with decent power. Sort of skippy at full rpm but with the blades running you don’t notice any stumble. I had to clean the carb out since it sat unused for 5yrs. After 20 minutes or so it will randomly bog down and just billow gray smoke for 5 seconds and then clear right out and keep going. Motor is more “clackety” than a Vtwin but I guess that’s more normal than the smoother Vtwin.

Mower Engines & Parts / Vanguard Cams and Rods
« on: March 12, 2019, 08:36:35 pm »
I have 2 billet non insert Vanny rods that have about 10 races on them. We have a mandatory engine builder and arent allowed in the engines. We request new rods every time they are out for rebuild. $100 for the pair.

Also have a stock cam +.100 lift which makes torque at around 4000rpm and peak hp at 5800 with stock heads/valvetrain. We turn them 6600rpm typically. $125

A brand new Cheetah cam in the bag with card never run. Paid $250 this summer. Will take $200.

I have paypal and will estimate or combine shipping. Its tough to get to a UPS store working 8-5 so bare with me please on shipping.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Need a part number
« on: July 09, 2017, 09:17:49 pm »
On any Vanny V twin there used to be flywheels with the aluminum ring gear riveted to them. I know they are discontinued but does anyone know what the old number used to be? Or if there is an aftermarket replacement? I have a model 35 but they are all the same ring gear whether it had the fins cast in or not.

Thanks for the help

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Vanny block journal size
« on: November 21, 2016, 03:45:59 pm »
I have 2 blocks here and i am not sure what the size should be to determine if they are the large or small journal on the flywheel side. 35 blocks so it could be either. I only have the block not the crank to help ID them.

Thanks for the measurement

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Starter Bolt Length needed
« on: July 25, 2015, 07:46:02 pm »
All of my motors are buried in chassis and i need the length of the starter bolts on a Vtwin Vanny with the Denso starter. I think they are M8x1.25 by 100mm?

Thanks

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Breaking ARC hubs when removing
« on: April 23, 2015, 08:53:45 pm »
I just broke my 3rd hub while properly removing a flywheel the other night. All on different motors 2 of mine and 1 customers. None of them are installed with loc-tite as some recommend. I have actually started glazing antiseize on them to try to prevent issues since i run the full flywheel key anyway. I start removing them a few turns at a time on each side and if i get significant binding i reset position and try again. Eventually you need to use some pretty good tightening force to get it to pop and that's when i've cracked the hubs. They split right across like a bridge by the bolt hole.
I just bought ARC's flywheel puller and used it successfully a week or so ago although the holes aren't drilled precise enough and it rubs the threads off of the puller. This was after i had already cracked the customer's hub and luckily this helped pop it free.

I haven't broken every hub i've taken off... i know the procedure. I deal with these on a semi regular basis but of the 30 or so i've had to remove i find it concerning that ive broken 3 so far over 2-3 years.

Anybody else have issues like this?

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Valve Spring Part #
« on: October 12, 2014, 08:27:32 pm »
Does anyone have the part number for the "purple stripe" 23hp springs?  I'm wondering what the difference is between these and stock 35ci springs. They have a slightly thicker wire diameter than the aftermarket ones i run now. And they may be causing valve failures at random so i'm looking to try something else.

Thanks

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Could i tell a Cheetah with a dial gauge?
« on: August 27, 2014, 05:26:06 pm »
If i put a Cheetah in a motor vs a stock cam +.100 lift could i see the difference with a dial indicator on the pushrod? I CAN NOT get into the motor. I'm asking for a tech situation. Just want to see if the lift is that much different in the dark in a dusty tech shed.

Thanks

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Built in rev limiter... what could it be?
« on: June 23, 2014, 05:16:54 pm »
35 cu on methanol. Electric fuel pump. Stock valvetrain and slightly hotter cam. ARC wheel gapped correctly at 26-30deg. I have cleaned the fuel system and have good pressure. Have also gone up and down on main jets and swapped carbs. Put new plugs in this week along with the timing change. Motors run about 6400rpm. The motor will run good for about 3 laps and then just break up a tad on the top end. It sounds exactly like a rev limiter. No backfiring of extra fuel from what i can hear. I'm not sure what else to check. Usually this happens with valve springs when they give up but these are only 2 races old (normally go 8-10 races).

Coffee Shop / Broke ARC flywheel hub
« on: March 10, 2014, 09:47:17 pm »
So i was correctly removing my Vanny's flywheel yesterday and using some pblaster also. I sometimes can't get it to pop on the first shot so i stop and rotate it to a different spot. On the second spot i heard a crinkling/crack. A few minutes later i see that the area near the whole split and is rising up as the bolt tightens down. Thank the lord a bit of heat on the hub and a gentle pry got it to pop free. Could have been a huge mess getting that bugger off with only one working bolt.

How common is this? I've taken about 20 of these off/on since they made these legal for us last year.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Nikki Bowl Plug
« on: February 15, 2014, 05:36:49 pm »
Does anyone have a source/replacement for the plain drain plug for the 2bbl Nikki bowl? Most carbs have the antifire solenoid in them but i can't use that because of the horizontal shaft elbow and my manifold spacer.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Advancing the cam a tooth
« on: October 15, 2013, 09:37:24 pm »
I've only loosely heard of guys doing this. Does it add bottom end mostly? Would it work the same for a cam with stock profile and .100 more lift? Or would i have interference issues?
