Title: New Mod XR Steering finished!
Post by: Nkaratzas89 on December 24, 2014, 03:32:59 pm
Hi Guys!

Here's a video of my Mower's steering. I have been debating whether to weld the pitman arm onto the bell crank and create almost no play, but have it unremovable.. or to leave the 1/4 of play thats currently in the whole set up and be able to remove the bell crank. Give me your input because Im split on what I should do!

Your going to want to get that play out.  You want none.  Also you will want to slow the steering down.   You have less than 1/4 turn lock to lock.  It will make it hard to drive.

It also looks like it turns hard.  You need to work on your angles to make it turn easy.

Okay, Would it be as simple as turning the angle of the pitman arms so they line up? I recently drilled new pitman arm holes so now its just over 1/4 turn lock to lock and its a it easier. Would you recommend creating a tight, non removable bell crank or a loose (like in the video) Removable bell crank?

Thanks for the input,
Nico

You for sure want the steering to be tight. You dont want any slop like you have in the video.

You want about 1/2 turn lock to lock.

1/4 turn is too fast.

No slop at all.

Would it be okay to take the slop out by welding the bell crank's pitman arm to the bell crank? So it wouldnt be able to come off easily but there would be no play. Ive also shortened the pitman arm on the steering columb so its closer to 1/2 turn lock to lock. It steers way easier now! thanks for the advice, ratio is key.

yes, weld the arm to the bell crank. Also it looks like the steel you used to make the pitman arms is too thin of steel. I only used 1/4" thick steel in these areas so it wouldn't flex or bend. Just my opinion.

Sounds like a plan! Ive decided to take a bigger bolt and drive it into the design I have now and now there is NO PLAY what so ever! Thanks for the advice all will be put into effect!

Thanks,
Nico

Okay, A new video has been uploaded! Now the steering is tight and has NO play. The trick was to drill the original hole out to 5/16 and drive a 5/16 or 8mm bolt into the hole and it took out ALL play! Watch the video to see the finalized design working.

Thanks for all the advice and support!

You still have more work to do.   Your still too fast on the steering.   It will be hard to control at speed with the steering that fast.   Shorten up the arm on the steering wheel.

Also you need spherical rod ends on all your tie rods.   That will help you a lot.   You won't have any bind and it will get rid of the rest of your slack.

The ratio I will work on, Adjustable hiem joint tie rods are in the mail and should be here in a few days. I also have some other ideas for my steering.. because of the starter interfering with the rod going from the steering column to the bell crank, my only potion would be to lengthen the pitman arm on the bell crank, which I could do by about an inch. Would that make a noticable difference??
