Racing Mower Builds / Building a FXS
« on: July 22, 2014, 01:43:31 pm »
OK everyone it has been a long time since I tried posting up a build, but here we go again. This is an FXS using a GX390 engine and Murray wide body rails.
First things first. Get a Murray wide body mower and unbolt it all the way down to the rails. Clean up all the rust and gunk off of it and sand off the paint. This is will make the welding process so much easier.

OK now we need a flat clean metal table. In the previous picture you can see my welding table. Using clamps I clamped a large straight scrap piece of angle to the table so I had a starting point to keep everything square. Starting with a known flat square surface will produce a good flat square frame.

Now clamp one of the Murray rails to the angle iron and tack weld it to the table.

Once that is done unclamp the angle iron and clamp it to the second frame rail.  Measure (twice) both ends of the Murray rail to 15" outside to out side. This ensures that the first frame rail is the same as the second one and they are parallel to each other. Double check to ensure that the frame rails are square to each other as pictured. Then tack weld it to the table. Great now we have a starting point.

Chassis / Steering shaft

What diameter rod would you use on a FXS steering shaft? 1/2", 5/8" or 3/4"
I have a bunch of old 5/8" rod but have seen ones with much larger diameters.

Honda and Clone Engines / Honda Clone Rod
« on: January 24, 2014, 03:09:24 pm »
Had the number for the Honda clone connecting rod wrote down, but now I can not find it. So what is the part number from ARC for the connecting rod for a Honda clone? George was telling me that I will have to cut the top of the stock piston because the ARC rod is longer. I got that covered and now I need the rod but can't find the paper I wrote the number on. :bash: I really need to work on my filing system.

Than in advanced.

Honda and Clone Engines / Harbor Freight Predator 420
« on: October 17, 2013, 02:53:07 pm »
OK did some searching and need to ask. Harbor Freight has two different part #'s (60340 & 60349) both appear to be the 13hp clone motor everybody is talking about. The only difference in the description that I can find is that one has a EPA rating and the other has a EPA III rating. If one was going to purchase a Predator motor from Harbor Freight which one would should be purchased and why?

Thank you.

Post your Pics! / Shamrock, Texas race
« on: March 18, 2008, 12:14:56 pm »
We loaded up and headed out for Shamrock, Texas for a LSMRA points race.

Took my two mowchines, the S/P "Mowlenium Falcon" and the F/X "Sod Racer" and took Ed's S/P mowchine, TazMow. The weather, track and crowd were great!

My little buddy "Butch" wanted to race too!

He was looking for someone to reach the clutch for him.

We had a fantistac time. The folks in Shamrock all came out for the races.
I took first place in S/P & F/X and Ed got 2nd. Not too bad for a pair of Arkansas boys!

Then it was time to head home. Butch had had all the fun he could stand and was all tuckered out.

Racing Mower Builds / Skeeter's Huffy F/X
« on: February 07, 2008, 02:04:09 pm »
O.k. everyone this is going to be my F/X build. I will start with an old Huffy 5hp, 24” cut mower.

I got this mower out of an old barn, back in Aug, '07, for $50.00 and have been colecting parts ever since.

Here she is.

First things first, I had to get her in the shop ready to get broken down into the basic parts.

The work stand was made out of some old crates from a lawnmower shop. The guy gave me the metal crates that his new ZTR mowers came on. They worked out well for a race mower stand.

As I said, I have been colleting parts ever since I got the mower back in August of 2007. I laid some of them out on the table and took this shot.

I’m sure that George and Mike Cupps and some E-bay folks are going to recognize the parts.

Well time to get started. Got a full glass of tea and the radio is on and the shop is warm so here we go.

Post your Pics! / First Win!
« on: August 28, 2007, 11:43:34 am »
Well I finally made it. My first win. Not too bad for a rookie. This was the last race of the 2007 season for the LSMRA. I can't wait till next month and the new season.

Now I gotta keep the loose nut between the seat and the steering wheel adjusted just right. :P

Check out the Seymour Speedway site for all of the racing pictures.

Post your Pics! / Old Huffy
« on: August 16, 2007, 05:34:22 pm »
Hey look what I found.

It is an old 5hp Huffy. I do not know what year it is and have searched the web but still can not find the year.

The Model # is H 1016 7014 and the ser # is 02537712

Looks like I get to build a A/P or F/X some day. It was complete except for the seat and the blade.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / building a C/P 28cid or 31 cid
« on: July 23, 2007, 03:56:39 am »
I have decided to build a new C/P class motor for the next years racing season. This appears to be the correct path toward the faster classes. I have a 28 flattie with all of the goodies in it, ie.. billet rod, balance weights, small ring piston and billet flywheel & starter. I might have to use these parts in the new motor. I know that the 31cid OHV will require a new rod and piston. Everyone says that there is no replacement for displacement, but.....

I have two (2) 28 cid ohv motors in the shop now to start with. Do I need to go and find a 31cid block? or use the 28cid block and find a smaller head for it?

Will the crank and lower pan from my 28 flattie fit the 31cid ohv? Is there a difference in the balance weights between the ones I have on the 28 flattie crank and the ones I will need for the 31cid ohv? reason I ask is that isn't the 31's rod longer which would make it heavier?

I have been up reading the ohv section all night and ran across some interresting post. I read that the 28cid head fits the 31cid block. I read that I need to find some better rockers from a vanguard motor. I read that the push rods need to both be the steel ones. I read that George has the springs and billet retainers, thanks buddy  phone call coming!

Is there a post or would some kind soul post something like "OHV Race Motors for Dummies"

I'm looking for something like:

Step #1. use this block
Step #2. use this head
Step #3. do this to the head, port, rockers, push rods, valves, springs & retainers
Step #4. use this piston, rod & weights
Step #5. assemble correctly
Step #6. bolt into race mower
Step #7. grab throttle and hang on! :3gears:

Thanks gang for any and all help.
Scott
