Tires / old tires

Just got my hands on some old tires, they're in great shape other than being hard as a rock. Is there any home recipe I can use to soften them up? :worried:

Driveline / Re: belts and pulleys

I know what you are saying, they will be vertical . Check out Georges super modified single. This is what I'm aiming for. I'm still collecting parts. got some exhaust pieces today. I'm stripping an old sprint go cart I got in a trade, so axel, steering, gears and brakes are in hand. Just want to get every thing lined up before I start cutting and welding. I hate waiting on parts.

I haven't totally given up on running a chain from the motor to the jackshaft, right now I just looking at the options and parts avilability. Right now I have access to a scrap yard for 35 cents a pound. Thanks for the input as thats what I needed, a little reinforcement.

As it stands now the seciondary side  12 on the clutch and 72 on the axel or 6 - 1 ratio. If I run 1 to 1 on the primary side and stay around 5000 rpm, why would it not work? With the torque of the engine and depending on tire size it should rattle on pretty good.  What would be the difference if I put the clutch on the engine and run a chain instead of a belt to the primary side of the jackshaft?

I have started work on a build like Georges mod single with a 420 predator. It will remain stock for a while until every thing is working properly. No for the first question, Why can't I run a belt from the motor to the jack shaft and then put a shoe clutch on the output side of the jackshaft? Do you use the mower pulleys or say something from tractor suppily? What sizes would you suggest? What size belt, A or B ? Any input would be greately appreciated!! :worried: :worried:

Driveline / First time build
« on: December 06, 2013, 12:46:52 pm »
This is my first time build and I may ask a lot of dumb questions. My drive line will be motor to ragb direct without a belt clutch. I intend to put a drum style clutch on the output side of the ragb and chain to a 1 1/4 go kart axel. I have everything except the ragb, so when
I make a trip to the junk yard, what do I look for?
Also are any mower races held in SW virginia where I could show up and learn??

Tires / modified build
« on: November 15, 2013, 08:58:49 am »
I am going to start building a modified over the winter. as this is my first attempt I may start a little different than others. I come with a go kart background so I have many go kart parts among those are wheels of different widths. I'd like to know what wheel and tire size would be best using these wheels. I need to know this to set frame height before I start welding. Also I intend to build my own front axel and I need to know the deminsions of the end plates or where to buy same.
Caution, this is the first of many questions.

Chassis / Re: What happened???

Sorry for the mistake, thanks for straitning me out. My build is inspired by George Herren's single cylender mod. I already have a rear axel from a speedway go kart that is ready to bolt on. I have been given a John Deer with no motor and will at least use the tin for my project. There will probably be some steering linkage and other parts that I can transfer. Maybe it will have a good seat that I can use. Oh, did I say I haven't seen it yet?? The motor will run through a drum type clutch back to a jack shaft then to the 1 1/4 go kart axle. Since this is farming country there are a lot of pulling mowers but no racing mowers maybe I can start something!!
