Chassis / Re: 5/8 spindle length

Do yourself a favor and wait until you have the wheels and hubs you want to run.

It will save you time and money in the long run.

If you are set on build them now just build them to the wheels you are going to run but be prepared to rebuild them when you switch wheels.

If you are planning on using stock wheels.    Don?t.   They will break and you will get hurt.   The front end is no place at go cheap on any build.

Driveline / Re: 35 chain
« on: August 05, 2021, 03:51:16 pm »
More people run 35 chain than any other chain on the national circuit.   Some guys run it on their twins but they change it often.  Running a jack shaft helps with the load by splitting up the change in ratio.

I ran 35 on my old sidewinder fx and never once broke a chain.   And it was one of the faster mowers in the nation.    And I beat the crap out of it.

Best part of good 35 chain is that there is no master link to come apart.   Buy the tool and make your own custom length chain.

35 chain works just fine with a single.

I ran it for years with great success. And several others have as well.

Buy high quality chain.

Briggs Flathead / Re: Looking for info on a 12 HP V twin flathead
« on: July 21, 2021, 11:55:50 pm »
Is it a V twin? Or an opposed twin?   Big difference.

There is a legend that there was a 12hp opposed twin Briggs.  40 cid I believe.

Although I think some guy bought a sticker kit from Briggs and fooled a bunch of people.   Because the same guy found a 40 HP 49 cid Briggs v twin.

If it is an opposed twin get a 33 ohv single.  You will smoke the opposed twin and it is identical to a ?12 hp? smaller ohv single.

To be honest with you it would be cheaper to buy one that is already done than to start fresh.

Look for a used built engine. New parts will be around $1500 just for the engine.  You can find used parts for much less.

Yes you will sink a lot of money in doing it right.   You are modifying a machine to go 50 mph when it is designed to go 5 mph.

What your wanting is going to cost some cash.

Ditch the transaxle unless you find an 820.

You need real disk brakes mounted on the axle.

You need a full built chassis.  Stock parts will fail at the speed you want to achieve.

Wheels.  Spindles.

I?d start with a v twin.   It will need to be built.  Including a billet flywheel.

You are looking at several thousands of dollars to go 40-50 MPH.

If you are on a tight budget keep it governed.  It will save you money in the long run.

First upgrade the brakes.   Or you or your son will get hurt.

Check out the build section.  Just because you aren?t going to ?race? it all the safety stuff still applies.

Insurance companies that insure racing and racers.

I don?t know how they came up with that number, nor do I care.   That is the standard.  It isn?t going to change.

Everyone has to start somewhere.   Not trying to discourage you.  Just laying out the ground rules.

All the questions to your answers are in here.  Sit back and do some reading.   You can find the info you need.   In the build section there are many pictures that will help.

If your going to modify it ditch the governor.

Buy a billet flywheel.  Steel or aluminum.

Roller rockers are a good upgrade along with a performance cam.

Billet rods will keep it together

A good carb will make it run right.

According to the insurance companies 3650 is Max for stock flywheels.  Heymow agrees.

I don?t make the rules

If I did they would look much different!!! And I?d probably still be racing.....

If racers want to keep their insurance they won?t spin engines faster than the recommended 3650 with a stock flywheel.

This has been a long standing stance by heymow as well.

We don?t discuss or recommend dangerous practices.  This includes modifying a flywheel or running a stock flywheel faster than 3650.
