Other Engines / Re: Honda GXV340 Performance Help
« on: August 31, 2010, 11:00:58 pm »
You can use a header on it but you may have to make it yourself. The GXV engines have a totaly different head from the GX engines and I dont think the ports are as nice.

My son has one on a barstool racer, good dependable engine like all Honda's,rev's good and if it starts to missfire it is time to file the points and reset them.

Doesn't mean that the key isn't broken and the timing is out.

I think you will like them much better with bearings.

If you have access to a lathe you should have done what I did. I used a piece of schedule 80 wall pipe and machined the inside for a bearing.I tried a machine with spindles like you made and it was very hard to steer unless the heim joints were greased really well,my own machine with the bearings in the spindles steers with one hand.

If you use the big journal AVS crank in the flathead 28,do you have to use the ARC brass weights to balance it? Or can you use the stock syncro ballancer?

On some of the 4 post solenoid's one of the little posts have to be grounded to work,it doesnt matter which one is grounded.Apply power to one of the posts to get the solenoid to close and ground the other one.

Did you notice how the cylindar pressure actually went down on the smallest head? That is because the cylindar is not filling as full because the valves are shrouded. When the rpm's go up there is even less time to fill the cylindar than at cranking speed and the problem gets worse. That is why George always says that flow is so important.

Chassis / Re: Instant Center
« on: May 27, 2009, 12:32:19 am »
I believe the instant centre theory only works when you have suspension with control arms that are moving through an arc. When you have no moving control arms you dont get the caster gain or camber gain effects that you are trying to deal with on a suspended vehicle.
The roll centre height I was going to say would be at the axle height, but after thinking some more I am not so sure anymore.I am thinking that the height of the driver seat might affect that, and also the ride height of the chassis.

Chassis / Re: Building an FX

I think the drivers weight is more important than the weight of the engine. If the engine is in the centre and the driver has to sit on top of it then the weight of the driver is too high.If you have a step through chassis and the engine in front you can get the weight of the driver a lot lower, your chassis wont be as top heavy on the track.

If you have a bad valve you should notice that on a leakdown test or even a compression test.Could it be that you got the valves lashed wrong and one is not closing.

On the Honda carbs the low speed jet is that plastic piece that pulls out after you take out the plastic screw that sets your idle speed.

I would try cleaning the carb again to get rid of the bog,it probably still has a piece of dirt in it.
