Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Cant figure out my hi torque starter problem.
« on: July 30, 2018, 02:39:22 pm »
So been having issues with this high torque starter some times engaging and some times just spinning the starter gear. Pulled the tin work off today to see if i could check ring gear to starter gear spacing but doesnt look to be possible but just eye balling it i believe its spaced right.

So turning the key when its not engaging the flywheel and just spinning its tearing off peices/corner of the flywheel gear. But its just random. 3 times it might work and 1 time it might rip teeth peices off. Even if its in the same spot on the fly wheel sometimes its good and sometime its destorying teeth.

What do you guys think?

well I was looking at buying a denso starter for my 23hp vanguard so it will turn over without help and I see that the briggs 808498 has 15 teeth not 16 like my stock starter so I assume it will not fit. The starter and flywheel are off of a 16hp vanguard that I used for parts. I guess I thought most of the parts between these motors were interchangeable.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / HD Stamped Rocker Arms Part #? 38ci
« on: October 20, 2017, 07:20:22 pm »
Just wondering if anyone could give me the part number for the new HD style stamped steel rocker arm for my rebuild 23hp. Put a cheetah cam and billet retainers with double valve springs and I don't want to break the steel rockers. Not sure what I have now but would like to look at the new Style at least and compare it to mine or order new ones. Thanks

Well I got lucky and the 38ci short block I just received is only going to need honed. I am planning on having Total Seal make me a gapless top ring and standard second compression ring and wondering if you guys knew the standard ring specs or piston specs for the ring grooves.

Here is what I came up with from measuring:

Piston ring groove 1.20mm thick
Piston ring thickness 1.06mm

Piston groove depth 2.90mm
Ring depth 2.82mm

These numbers sound right to you guys? Didn't know if there was a link somewhere that listed the factory specs on the rings. Thanks Dan

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Pistons over .020??? 38ci Vanguard
« on: September 30, 2017, 09:32:03 am »
From what I've read it seems that the stock sleeve on the 38ci can be bored .050 over but is there any pistons available in .030/.040/.050 over or do you have to have custom pistons made for these sizes?

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / figuring compression?
« on: September 09, 2017, 03:43:41 pm »
Was wondering how you guys figured compression running different heads/gaskets. I currently have a 16hp vanny and will be running 23hp heads with a 842622 3 piece head gasket (only running the thin outside piece per head) any idea where my compression ratio is going to be?

I can put a compression gauge on it once I get it back together but I would like to end up at 10.5 to 1 compression.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Vanguard 23hp airflow restrictions?
« on: September 02, 2017, 11:40:33 am »
Just wanted your guys thoughts on where the most improvement can be made on the intake for a 23hp vanguard.

Im thinking either the elbow or double barrel carb is probably the most restictive point in the system. Anyone open either of these up and see a noticeable difference? I plan on matching the intake to the heads and figured id look for other airflow improvements.

No class restrictions on this motor btw.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / 18hp Vanguard Build Advice
« on: August 17, 2017, 08:25:02 pm »
Hello everyone first post here.

I have a 18hp Vanguard i'm looking at doing some work to and wonder what all you guys recommended. Currently the motor is stock and I have purchased a pair of 23hp Heads that I plan on bringing down .050, a 2 barrel carb and the intake for the 23hp setup. I hear the 23hp cam also will provide some extra lift? Is it worth tracking one down and any idea of the part number?

If there any other easy mods that can be done to this motor?

This is just a fun motor no racing no mowing or anything like that so there is no restrictions on what I can do to it but I would like to keep it safe and reliable. I figure I will do this first set of upgrades this year and see how I like it next year (Winter Project) and if it still needs more power maybe I'll consider adding a IHI RHB31 Turbo, bigger carb, and so on.
