You don't gain horsepower you just loose less to the gearbox.  Befor the bret trans that everybody is using now came out(talking about dirt latemodels) we would take a 4speed trans and remove 1st and second.  you would restart in 3rd and shift to 4th.  4th is 1 to 1 and uses the least amount of gears.  at the time it was clamed that runing 1 to 1 would free up about 50 hp compared to any other combo.

It has been done on flathead kart engines (anglemilling) it works good on a pure stock engine (thats why wka has you tech the head depth in 3 places) but rooster is right it dosen't work on a modded flathead. flow is king on a mod flathead.

Briggs Flathead / how to tell a model 28 from a 19

I've been running karts for a while and now i want to build a mower.  I bought a bunch of blowed up vertical shaft engines.   I plan to run single cyl modifed.  my question is how do i tell a model 28 from a 19 when there in a box with no shrouds. and wich one is better to use.  also in my travels looking for parts engins which ones should i look for?

just do what ole smokey yunic did on his indy engines. get some good duct tape and cover all the gauges.  then tell the driver to hold the loud pedal down till it quit moveing
