Briggs Flathead / Briggs Numerical Designation System - Model Type Code
« on: November 09, 2008, 10:23:46 pm »
Since Briggs has hidden, or at minimum moved this information on their site, and we're eternally seeking it and can't find it there any longer. And, since we don't have control of any other sites out there containing this info, I thought we should have a copy of our very own here for reference!

And, to try and make it accessible to as many souls as possible, I converted it to pdf format.

Kohler Engines / Interesting Kohler Build Info
« on: October 30, 2007, 12:19:38 pm »
Was searching the web for other goodies and stumbled upon this page detailing build specs for Kohler engines for garden tractor pulling; thought some of you guys might find it of interest since the topic of Kohler builds surfaces on occasion around here.

The page appears to contain a LOT of great information on Kohler engine builds, along with a good many Kohler engine specs! Worthy enough, I felt it should be stickied here at the top of the Kohler build section anyhow, so I did!

« on: June 24, 2007, 03:07:19 pm »
I thought we had stickied this once before, but can't find it now... Grassthrasher offered it up once again for review, but having had a really tough time with the download from his offered location at upload.com I dug up the G-Team link for you guys!

Many of you already have this manual as it is the manual offered for download on the USLMRA Yahoo Group.

Admin Announcements / Avatars
« on: December 28, 2006, 04:59:01 pm »
Over the last few days I've run across several avatars on the forum that were being called from the full size image on Photobucket. The forum software was set to resize these images, so they look like any other avatar when loaded. Being a web designer however, I notice things that others may not notice, and I know what causes many problems when I see them on a web page. When I load a page and scroll all the way to the bottom of the page to find an avatar still loading, it's pretty much a dead giveaway that image's file size is huge!!

After finding the first, and determining it was 287 kb, which avatars are supposed to run down around 5 kb max, if you want the page to load efficiently, I've been checking a great many of them and cutting new avatars for you behind the scenes. I've also discovered several that the images were resized to proper dimensions but no file compression was used on the image, and those have been running in the 10 - 15 kb range. Likewise I have resized several of those.

If your avatar disappeared on you mysteriously it is likely because we changed settings in the back room to reject large file sizes on avatars, rather than simply resize their dimensions. If you need help with resizing your image, post it here and I'll cut you a new one in proper dimensions and file size.

Sorry about the trouble guys, but when we get several of these huge files on a page, it slows page load speed drastically for those on dial-up, and we want their experience here to be as enjoyable as everyone else's. Especially since two of our Admin members have to endure this as well!!

Since we seem to still have some folks that are having trouble with the Photobucket thumbnail approach to doing things, and we will eternally have newbies arriving that will need this information as well, I've put together this step by step approach to the process for everyone's benefit. This thread can be used for future reference of this process.

First go to Photobucket, set up your account or log into your existing account. Select My Album from the menu top of the page at right. To arrive at this screen.

Here you can browse the files on your computer, select the image file and upload.

If you click on the Add more images link just below the upload form it will open up multiple forms to load as many images as you wish at once.

When loading multiple images, if they are in a dedicated order, such as this demonstration or step by step in a build, you need to upload them in reverse order i.e. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Photobucket inverts the order when it uploads them, and when you cut your code it will all be bassackwards!

Once your images are loaded, scroll down the page to the images you want to load and check the little box under each image you want to create code for. Please note inverted order in the Photobucket album here! You've got to load them backwards!!

Go to the bottom of the page, and click "Generate HTML and Image Code" to generate code. This can be done for a single image, or for multiple images all at once. See above comments on inverting image order in the case of images in dedicated order.

You will advance to the Image and Clickable Thumbnail Generated Code page next. Scroll down to the Image "Clickable Thumbnails for Message Boards".

Park your cursor in the box next to the code, and left click to highlight all code. Right click and select copy, or you can use the Ctrl + C shortcut to copy the code.

Come back to Mowbetter, or wherever you're going with this, select Reply or use the Quick Post form. Left click in the form to set your cursor in the form.

Then right click and select Paste or use the Ctrl + V shortcut to paste the code in the form box.

Your code should look like the above example The URL establishes the link to photobucket on the IMG, the url or if prefer web address within the IMG tag is the thumbnailed image. This is denoted by the th_ preceeding the file name. i.e. th_PB3.jpg as seen above. Please note the above images were loaded in PB1, PB2, PB3 order... the order in Photo Album and thus in generated code was backwards. Had to delete these and start over in inverted order.

Once the code is set you can move down the right side, and click Enter a couple of times after each closing URL tag to separate your images, and insert text between the images. As seen here and in the build threads.

Code: [Select]
[/URL]  <~~ That is a closing URL tag the / switch tells the browser to close the [URL] tag in code.
Then click Preview to make sure everything is correct, click Spell Check to correct all the errors in your written text, and then click Post!

And, that's how it's done guys!!

Post Your Video / New Video Section
« on: December 03, 2006, 05:38:56 pm »
In thread elsewhere around here it was mentioned that we have a great many video links showing up on the board of late and we might want to consider a video section. Which I thought was a good idea, since we have had several requests for video of late as well. So... We now have one!

A new "Post Your Pictures/Video" Topic has been set up, the former "Post Your Pics" and the NEW "Post Your Video" topic boards are now child boards of that Topic.

If you have an interesting LAWN MOWER VIDEO you want to post a link to here, this is the place. If you have need to host your video to post it, see PhotoBucket.com, they host video as well.

And, NO! we Admin are not going to run around the board and herd up all your video links for you! If you guys want to chase them all down and link them up here knock yourselves out! If you find one that's way cool in browsing the forum, copy it and paste it here please!

Post Your Pictures/Video / Thumbnailing Images on the Board
« on: December 03, 2006, 05:20:19 pm »
As has been discussed several times throughout the forum the use of thumbnailed images provides numerous benefits to the forum and it's members. Simply posting an image will result in a smaller rendition being posted as the forum software limits the size of images posted to 300 x 200 pixels. This does not however reduce file size, wherein you create problems for those members on dial-up when you post several large pictures. And, those images are not clickable for the full size rendition, you're stuck with a 300 x 200 picture.

To properly post these images to afford the most benefit to the forum and it's members, those images should be thumbnailed and linked, which offers not only a reduced file in image posted, it also affords you a clickable link to the larger image. Photobucket offers a sweet and simple solution for this method as is dicussed in the quote below by Squidd.

We ask that you please use this method when posting your pictures with narration in a thread.

Photobucket also provides hosting for your video footage as well, if you really aren't interested in posting it on YouTube. See... http://photobucket.com/ to sign-up for your free photo/video hosting.

Those are on photobucket right...?

Go to your album page...
Check the little box right next to the title (just under picture)
Go to bottom of page where it says "generate html and img code" click that...

It'll open new page...

Click the center line "IMG clickable thumbnails for message boards - recommended"
Copy and paste here...done...

Optionally... if you aren't concerned about narration of the images and simply want to post a picture or two quickly, without the hassle of loading them to Photobucket, you can use the Addional Options link below the input box in "Reply". No this ain't there in "Quick Reply", you must click the Reply link to access it.  When you click the Additional Options it opens up, well... additional options! One of which is "Attach", wherein if you click browse you can find and upload the files directly from your computer. This method auto-thumbnails the images on the forum, likewise affording smaller file sizes and quicker loads for dial-up users.

Other Interesting Builds / Other Interesting Builds!
« on: November 01, 2006, 12:21:31 am »
Recognizing there are several worthy builds around the forum that just don't neccesarily fit the criteria of the Racing Mower Build board, we have implemented the Other Interesting Build board to allow you mechanical geniuses that build goodies other than racing mowers a home for your builds also.

 :woohoo:

What should be here?

If it starts as a lawn mower and you're building a project with it, this is the place for it! As is the case in the Racing Mower Build thread, we want step by step details and photos posted here to keep your thread in the Other Interesting Build board. If it stagnates after a post or a picture or two, it will be moved to a more appropriate home.

Projects that instigated this thread and should probably be used as a guideline... Ty and others Monster Mowers, jeffescortlx's power wheels conversion, etc.

Again what we don't want to see is 2 - 3 pictures of you putting ATV tires on your backyard mud-mowchine. If you're going to the trouble to reinforce the frame, lower the chassis, build the engine and everything else, willing to do a step by step build thread, then sure go for it. But changing tires, swapping motors, changing pulleys, and/or removing the governor simply doesn't constitute a build guys! A build requires you to build something, not just swap something.

Racing Mower Builds / To Build or Not To Build?
« on: October 22, 2006, 03:50:05 am »
Started tearing mowers down today to start on builds and when I drug this one in and started looking I started wondering if I should tear it apart and scrap it or build it. So I'm going to seek the wisdom of the veterans, and members of mowbetter to decide!

Initially plans were to snarf the Peerless 600 out of this mowchine and send it to the scrap pile but, when I crawled underneath to look things over I ran into a few interesting discoveries on this mower.

First off, I thought it would be kinda heavy as bulky as it is, but it's not, grabbed the front end to slide it around and it wieghs nothing. About threw it across the room in fact!

Then in looking at the rear end, it's presently sitting at 11" off the ground. But, that's with 18" tires on it and, there's a 3" lift on the rear end.

By simply removing the lift and going to a 16" tire... thinking IMOW on this one guys... I can drop this thing about 4 1/2" - 5". putting me at only 6 inches on the rear end. Nearly where I want to be!! But there's mower!!

Front end is only 8 3/4" off the ground with about 3 inches drop resulting in the L spindles. So... upon losing them for a prepared front end, and losing another inch or so for the tires, I'm right in the general area again. Running boards are only 9" off the ground at present, -4" again puts me right where I want to be!!

Not mention the original plate with shift pattern notched out is already prefabricated and it has a chrome grille!

Not to mention that biiiig ugly hood hides a lot of room up front and everything is pretty open under the back end.

Not to mention that gives us LOTS of room for sponsors names! On the hood, not underneath! :D

There are however a few drawbacks...

1.) The side panels on that big ugly front end are bolted in place, limiting access to work on the engine. But... those could be unbolted, spot weld it, and hinge it with the hood.

2.) The frame on this thing is really light! Only 3 - 1/4" bolts holding the chassis plate and tunnel together, everything back there has large holes cut in it too boot.

3.) There is NOTHING in the front end to protect the engine! That lovely chrome chrille has a 3/8" expanded steel type mesh, absolutely nothing behind that. Would a slight mod to the frame to add some protection there be considered over board?

So how much reinforcement is considered NOT discreet reinforcement guys? This thing would take a wee bit of steel to wind up with anything that's gonna stand up to racing. But on the flipside, it is going in a governed class, so it doesn't have to be altogether bulletproof.

Whaddaya think guys build it or scrap it?!

Racing Mower Builds / Mower Build Thread Requirements
« on: October 20, 2006, 10:54:24 pm »
Request was made for a build thread, so... you got it. This appears to be most of the topics that fit in the classification of threads with at least some intrensic value as a build from the past, to a few builds in progress at present, to two truck loads of mowers that are winter projects; one of those being mine which I hope to get started on in the next few days. Hopefully DoubleW will get after his and give us much information and many pictures here too.

Topping the list here and stickied are Squidd's two threads, one on his AP build, one on Sami's JP build. This is what we want here guys... Lots of pictures with details about why you are doing it that way, or if you aren't sure ask (with pictures) how should I do this, and upon getting answers and doing that, post a picture to show the world what that answer looks like when done.

What we don't want here is a bunch of one or two picture posts of a motor swap, paint job on your hood, adding ATV tires to an otherwise stock mower, etc. etc.... those belong in the Post your Pictures section.

If for some reason you start a build, wind up with only a post/picture or two and it stagnates... your thread will eventually be moved from this thread to an appropriate home!

If anyone isn't clear on this, drop Randy or I a line. We'll be happy to explain it further. At this point we're simply trying to organize what we have to date, so we can build upon that.
