Best cheap modifications are a complete rebuild. put a arc connecting rod in,billet dog bone, new piston ,rins, wrist pin, gaskets, crank bearings if needed, port thr intake really good.and put a pipe nipple in the exhaust. maybe a mild cam if you dare .that with a flat slide mikuni carb will do pretty good.

well you really don't want to run that without the govenor trust me cast iron shards hurt the flywheel can come apart and the connecting rods are known to let go over 4,000 rpm. especially if they're tuckerd out. best thing you can do is put a arc connecting rod in mild cam and port the crap out of the intake but don't take out too much. the rod is $145? and a mild cam is around the same . check out isky cams. or performance parts by hitch. get a air filter from eccarbuetors and jet the carb or put a mikuni flat slide 40mm on it. change the pulleys on the drive system and add a tetherd kill switch .if you want more power after that your addicted xD. after a mild cam you will need a billet flywheel to with stand higher rpms.

recently received some good information from Jim hands on valve jobs and porting. to get the best volumetric efficiency  take your valve size(use a micrometer ) and multiply it by .85 to get the size your port/runner etc should be.  example my intake valve was 1.456x.85= 1.245  so I matched my port work close to this and did some fill work in certain areas I've yet to flow bench it .

here's another question, couldn't you take a chevy 454 high torque starter and adapt it to fit on the high compression motor? even a stock starter from a 1969 or 70 454 chevelle or corvette could do it right?
