Tecumseh Engines / Smoking out of breather?
« on: July 02, 2008, 11:58:25 pm »
I am finally fixing up my Massey-Ferguson 8 lawn tractor to make into a pulling tractor for the local pulls, but i ran into a strange problem.
It has a Tecumseh HL80 horizontal shaft engine. the strange thing is when i turn the engine over smoke pours out of the crankcase breather, and the smoke smells real bad like carbon or fireworks. but it happens when the engine dosen't even have a carb on it and with no gas in it! i checked the oil and its fine, and its clean oil. what could be causing it?

whenever i try to change my avatar i get this message:

"Your attachment couldn't be saved. This might happen because it took too long to upload or the file is bigger than the server will allow.

Please consult your server administrator for more information."

but the file is only 89X72 pixels and is only 6.8KB!!   i also tried with another pic which is 89x89 and is only 2.37KB but still the same message!! what could be the problem??

Here's both pics: i'd like to have the one with the pic of the mower in the sunset, but if not, then the other one:

Briggs Flathead / Question (requested by my dad)
« on: April 23, 2007, 07:04:57 pm »
my dad had a engine question regarding one of his mowers, and of course i brought it here to the pros!  :D
Well, what the dilemma is , is he has an old Sears Craftsman mower (almost identical to the one chris found in the woods a few months ago) and he hasn't used it in a few years because he said the engine would get so hot that the oil would actually BOIL. but the thing is that the engine would run perfectly fine when it's this hot. he thought the engine was "blown" originally, but it still runs fine... sorry, i don't know exactly what kind of motor the mower has, but i'm taking a wild guess thats its a B&S 10-12 HP

Any help will be greatly appreciated by my dad and I!!

Briggs Flathead / 11HP (25CID) and 12HP (28CID) interchangability
« on: March 29, 2007, 10:21:30 am »
up at my dads farmhouse (the same place where i got my MTD from) there sits a 12HP 28CID engine that had been left there by the former rentees. i looked it over, and when i shook the engine, i noticed a rattle coming from inside the block, so probibly the internals are shot. the carb on it is like new, and the block dosent seem to have any holes or cracks in it. i'm thinking that the counterweight just broke off and thats whats rattling around in the block. i haven't taken the engine apart yet, so i dont know the extent of the damage inside the engine is yet.

What i'm asking is are any of the parts off this engine useful on my 11HP 25CID engine thats in my MTD(like maybe the carb)? and whats the best thing i can do with this engine parts wise?

(yes i have tried the SEARCH feature, but came up with nothing)

I'm going back up to the farmhouse over Easter break, and i need to decide if that engine is worth taking home or not, so any help will be appreciated  :D

(EDIT: i forgot to mention the 12HP is a "Power Built", so it probibly has a cast iron sleeve)

Driveline / The Stallion's 39 year old "retired" driveline
« on: January 19, 2007, 12:30:51 pm »
well, while i had some extra time last weekend, i decided to push my stallion onto my dads front porch, sit it up on some sawhorses, and take it apart, and while i did, i took a few pictures of it:
The first pic is of the almost stripped frame sitting up on the sawhorses
the second pic is of the "Torque drive" transmission that it has, but the rbber on the vertical wheel is dryrotted, and the horizontal disk is warped.
The third pic is of the 3/4" axle that it has, also you can see that it has brass bushings instead of bearings.
The last pic is one of the re-fabbed spindles that i plan on replacing.

Chassis / Degreasing Methods
« on: November 20, 2006, 07:27:51 pm »
I've been lookin at my MTD's chassis tryin to figure out how to lower it, but i am getting TERRIBLY dirty trying to work around all the engine grease! i also noticed that on pics of you guy's chassis, their PERFECTLY clean! so, how do you guys degrease them? i know that Kerosene gets grease off nice, but it takes a LOT of rubbing with a rag and its time consuming, so how do you guys do it?

Chassis / The Curse of the Solenoids
« on: November 13, 2006, 02:57:57 pm »
Well, this last weekend, i hooked the battery up on my MTD to try to turn the engine over, and it wouldnt work. so i took out my light tester, and found out the Solenoid wont work. So i put away the MTD for now, and went over to my Ford mower (which has been sitting un-used for about 3 weeks now) and i went to start it up to go ride it around in the woods, BUT then IT wouldnt start EITHER! so i took the battery out and polished all the wiring connections, put it back together, and it STILL wouldnt work! so i took my light tester out again and found that THIS Solenoid is shot too!!! so now both mowers have shot solenoids and i have no money. So now i have no idea what to do. Is there a way to repair the solenoids? or is there a place i can get one for cheap?

Post your Pics! / My NEW FREE mowchine!!!
« on: November 07, 2006, 10:25:49 pm »

Well, the other weekend i went up to my dads Farmhouse to help the former rentees move out. So when i walked around the barn, i found this Montgomery Ward / MTD sittin in 2 foot grass, with a with grass growing out of the old rotted seat cushion, all 4 tires flat, and missing a muffler or even a pipe for that matter. So i did what any 15-year old WOULDNT do. i went and asked if i could have it. And Before i knew it, i had the mower sittin in my driveway with the seat cushion ripped off, and with a racing steering wheel already mounted on it. The mower does have a deck with it, but i have no need to post the pic of it on here. Also when i looked at the transaxle, i could not identify it and it didnt match any of the ones on here. i would have a pic of the tranny, but my dad took these pics, and he forget to take one of it. I now plan to build this mower up FIRST before i even TOUCH the Ford or the Stallion. Also DONT FORGET, I GOT THIS MOWER AND MY OTHER 2 FOR FREE!!!! (lucky me) Well, heres the pics:

Chassis / Brakes on a unlocked Differential?
« on: October 30, 2006, 12:26:25 pm »
i was lookin around on back axle build pictures and i noticed that all the ones that had brakes on them had live axles. Isnt turning with a live axle difficult? and is there a way to mount brakes on a un-locked back axle/ differential?

Also somewhere around here i saw someone post a link on mechanical brakes and where to get them. but i cant find the link.

Driveline / Quick Question
« on: October 12, 2006, 12:37:47 pm »
Does anyone know what size the pulley shaft on a peerless 820 transaxle is? because i'm looking for a small pulley to put on my tranny and i need to know the shaft size, because i have a whole box of pulleys that i found in my dads barn, but i dont wanna take the tranny off my mower to check the size just yet.

Post your Pics! / yet ANOTHER new person
« on: October 02, 2006, 11:04:46 pm »
Hello, i'm a 15 year old from Cuba,NY. i've been visiting these fourms for about 2 weeks now, and i never knew that there are so many different kinds of racing mowers! i've been interested in lawn mower racing and modding since i was 8 years old when my dad first let me mow the lawn. my dad recently gave me 2 of his old mowers. one is a 1980 Ford LT11 with a 11HP briggs flathead motor. the other one is a very rare 1968 Stallion Twin 7 electric with a 7 HP techumseh (bad spelling). me and my dad tried to get the 7HP started, but without sucess, so we pulled the engine and put it aside to try to get it working some other day. so now i only have a 5 HP motor to mount on it just to get it moving for now. i will get pictures of them soon. i have no welding skills and i dont even have a welder, so i'll try to make a racer without welding...and i dont have much money at all, so i'm also trying to make a racer using the least amount of money. i know it'll be hard but i'll try my best...i also know any race tracks near southwestern NY. but i do have a HUGE farm feild behind my house that would make a sweet dirt track =P
