Tires / Re: setting the bead
« on: May 10, 2012, 09:12:36 pm »
thanks for all the tips guys......I'll give it another shot. Never had any trouble on the few regular mower tires I've done....must be the wider rims I guess?? The one side seated up just fine but this other one has made me string together cuss words that I don't think I've ever strung together before.  :D

Tires / setting the bead
« on: May 10, 2012, 03:36:19 pm »
Ok....what's the trick?  I used a rachet strap and I can almost get it to set but only half will go up on the bead and I can't get the other side to pop up there. I've tried soapy water which in the past has worked when putting mower tires on and I even hit it with silicone spray because that's rubber friendly. Still no dice. Is there a trick I'm missing to get the 2nd side to pop up over the shoulder? I haven't really put a ton of pressure in the tire because I don't want to pop it but I've had 30-34psi in it and it still won't pop over the shoulder.

Chassis / front axle mounting question
« on: April 21, 2012, 11:39:08 am »
I'm ready to mount my front axle. What I was planning on doing is cutting down to the 3/4" tubing ( red dots) and putting another piece of 3/4" between the frame bracing and then welding the axle to those pieces and up the frame. Any problems with doing that? Hopefully that makes sense. It'll be welded to the frame on both sides and then all the way across the length of it to the 3/4" tubing.

we used a small rotor and hyd brake from a junk pit bike. i welded the rotor to a 3/4 hub from tsc, made a bracket to hold the caliper to the transaxel and it all fit nicely iside the rear wheel.
do you have a picture of this set up? Trying my best not to have to spend $100 for just a brake hat.

Any options other than EC for a brake hat?

you can run a piece of rope or string through the pulleys and then measure the string if all else fails......

I ran into the same problem with not enough keyway. I used Roosters trick and extended to keyway using a die grinder with several cut off wheels stacked together. Then took my time and extended the keyway all the way to the transaxle housing. It worked fine I have done several that way.
that might be an option if the hat is too short. Good idea too......as long as you don't sneeze mid cut.

Got my rear hubs and wheels here. I test fit it up just to see what it looks like and how everything is going to fit. With where the keyway ends and the gap between the wheel and transaxle I'm going to have to run a brake hat correct? How long is a brake hat? I just want to make sure everything fits before I order parts I don't need......like the 3/4-1.25" bushing I ordered thinking I could run a hub for the disc. I'm also guessing I'll have to use the inner mounting points on the transaxle. It looks like everything will fit as long as that brake hat will get me back to the keyway and not be too long or short.

I ordered the golf cart rims today. Those should be fine to get me started. It's easier to nickel and dime it once it's all built because you're not constantly shelling out cash for parts like I am now. I ordered my hubs, the .75-1.25 bushing for the brake, and wheels. I have the front axle and spindles coming next week sometime. I still need to find front hubs/wheels then it's on to tires. This initial punch is what's killing me. After this stuff and the brakes it starts to get cheaper. I sold some track tires I had for my car so that gave me some cash to play around with. I'm about out of stuff to sell though.

looking at getting rear wheels from http://www.buggiesunlimited.com/Golf-cart/8/166206301

they don't list if those are on a 4" bolt circle...anyone know for sure if they are? I'd hate to get wheels that won't work on those hubs.  I'm also guessing to get a centered wheel and not the 2x5 offset wheel?

thanks.....I have a front axle and spindles coming from SaltAMF so when I get those I can figure out what I need for the front end to get wheels on there. Then it's just a matter of setting the height. After that I'm going to tackle the steering, finishing the brakes, and jackshaft set up. This thing might be running before the summer's over yet.

Just wanted to see if someone would double check this before I start ordering to make sure I'm getting the right stuff. I sold some car parts today so I have a few dollars to spend on the mower.

I have a peerless 206 transaxle with 3/4" hubs.

will that get my rear axle taken care of as far as mounting up wheels and a brake rotor? Then I'll just need a 1.25 brake hub and disc on there. This is just to get the axle set up....I realize I'll need the rest of the brake components. I can't set my height until I get wheels on this thing so I'm trying to get that part taken care of.

Chassis / Re: tunnel help?
« on: March 14, 2012, 07:50:21 pm »
I have used that chassis with and without the tunnel with a transaxle....I could not find a way to fit a jackshaft in there!
A transmission and live axle fits, but a tran-saxle when sucked up into there fills the space up!
are you saying even with the tunnel you couldn't fit it using a transaxle? Looks like there's room if I do it that way.

I'll try to get some more pictures from underneath but I don't see any way it would fit. I'll look it over again to make sure. I may even mount the transaxle back up to it so I can measure although that transaxle will get moved up into the mower body but there's just zero room under it. Building a tunnel there would by far be the easiest and cleanest way of doing it I think......just wasn't sure how legal it would be. Sounds like it'll be ok though.
I wish there was an accurate way of setting my height without wheels/tires. It's going to be a bit though before I can buy those so I'm going to be at a stand still soon. I know I could get close sitting everything on blocks.....just not sure how accurate that is and it's really not the right way to do it so I'll just wait.

RULES ONLY SAY NO CHOPING THE FRAME. THIS INCLUDES WIDTH,WHEEL BASE OR LENGTH.
NOTHING THERE ABOUT ADDING TO THE FRAME AS LONG AS IT DOESNT CHANG WIDTH,LENGTH OR WHEELBASE.

HOW MUCH IS THIS TUNNEL GOING TO CHANGE THE LOOK OF THE MACHINE?
WHAT FRAME ARE YOU USING? WHAT CLASS ARE YOU BUILDING FOR?
I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A PICTURE OF WHAT YOUR DOING IF POSSABLE.

Here's a picture of what I'm working with. The red lines will be my cuts and that brown thing haha will be the top pulley of the jackshaft. Then I'll build a cover for it. It won't change the dimensions of the mower at all. It's a craftsman frame and I'm not sure on the class yet. It currently has a single ohv intek but I can get a v twin for free from a buddy of mine if I decided to go that route. The local track has a "stock modified single" and "stock modified twin". I just have the bracing in now and will be getting a solid front end this week. At that point I think I'm done until I can get wheels/tires for it so I can lower it and set the height.

Wouldn't be easier to just use a tunnel chassis?

yes....but I gotta work with what I got. Once I get my feet wet with this one and learn more about what I'm doing then I'll pick and choose my next one. This was free though so I have nothing but time invested so far although that's about to change.
