Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: model 28 wont start
« on: April 27, 2013, 03:19:59 pm »
I am having the same issues as you. If you have tried everything you can think of externally, it could be a worn cam or valves not closing properly.  I know the AVS motors are notorious for the cams wearing.

The 28 cu. in. AVS motor I have seems to point to the cam or maybe the valves not closing properly. I have replaced the flywheel key, spark plug, swapped carb with a known working one, checked compression, made sure the spark was adequate, made sure the push rods were straight, and adjusted the valves to spec.  The engine still backfires through the carb. The motor is getting torn down next, unless someone knows something else I may have missed.

I have the exact same issue. I have replaced the starter, carb, battery, adjusted and checked the valves, and replaced the flywheel key.  The engine fills up with gas too even with a properly working carb.  What else could the issue be? Thanks for the help.

These carburetors are stock and 100% legal. They were ordered with different jetting for this purpose. I did not know that US allowed an adjustable needle. That Tommy is not stock. ARMA does allows the needle though. But if US allows the needle then we can add that to it.

I did not know, you can order factory carburetors with different jettings. This is very interesting.  What if I just changed the jetting in my carb, is that still legal in IMOW?

I just reread the 2012 US rules and it only states not to exceed 17hp for the IMOW class, page 24. The 17hp 31 CI rule is only stated in the G/P class, page 26.  If the 31CI rule is in affect for IMOW and J/P it should be revised to include it like the G/P class is. Will someone clarify this for me? I am about to build an IMOW racer and was going to run the 17hp FC540V as well.

I just noticed the US rules have been updated. The G/P class now states 17HP 33CI, interesting. This means that your Kawasaki FC540V is legal for G/P. IMOW still does not specify the CI.

USLMRA Races / EC Carburetor's IMOW Class Carb?
« on: December 13, 2011, 08:14:56 pm »
EC Carburetor sells an IMOW Class Carburetor the states the low side circuit has been updated for quicker and easier starts.  I thought the carburetor had to be stock for IMOW? If this is allowed, what else can we modify on our engines and still be legal?

Other Engines / Re: Good Engine for IMOW Class

The IMOW and Super Stock rules state that we can run a 17hp engine, no specification on c.i.  I have access to some decent 15-17 hp engines, no Briggs though.  Does anyone know if IMOW or Super Stock classes will add the c.i. rule to them before the start of the 2012 season? I would hate to get an engine now and it not be allowed when the season starts.

Does anyone know the answer to my question? I plan to start mocking up my mower between Christmas and New Years and would hate to have to purchase another engine before the season starts.

Its not above the HP limit, but it is above the cubic inch limit in the new US rules.

Tom

DIDNT KNOW US HAD A CUID RULE.

Does Horsepower and Torque make a difference in this class too?  I have heard good things about Briggs and Kawasaki engines.

I am new to this Sport and looking to build a mower to compete in the IMOW class.  What are the engines some of the top racers use in this class?
