I showed a few pics of my 13 yr. old "Daughter's" S/S or J/P project in my A/P build up thread...
She was hanging around asking questions about my build up and I asked her if she would be interested in building and racing one of her own...
She showed a "spark" of interest so I pulled a back up frame in and put her to work on it..
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/th_MowerBuildUp047.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/MowerBuildUp047.jpg)
Bolting and torching, she pretty much "stripped the Mowchine in prep for cleaning...
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/th_MowerBuildUp048.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/MowerBuildUp048.jpg)

She got it down to the bare chassis and I showed her where to punch holes to lower the rear...then we took it to the car wash and degreased the sub frames..
I had these pics in the AP thread as a "side note" but her interest and involvement continues, so I'm starting a second "Build up" Thread with her Mowchine...
As the S/S or J/P class is basicly the same frame build as the S/P (just gearing and motor difference) I thought these may be of interest to others as well...
We' are going to build this mowchine with the lowest possible dollar investment, so don't look for chrome wheels and fancy parts...most every thing on this will be low buck or transfered from other machines..
Biggest being the use of stock steel wheels and tires...
The build principals are the same though, and feel free to substitute machined, aluminum and high dollar parts where ever you feel needed for durabilty and performance...
Heres a quick shot of the "rolling" Chasis...
And of course a "Junior Racer" practicing her driving style...

As Sami has been excited about the project all thru to this point, it looks like we'll be taking this one to compleation...And another racer will join our ranks...
So at this point, I'll go back and take some "detail" shots of the build up, parts and peices for those that are interested...
Remember, other than some of the welding, a 13 year old girl did all the work on this Mowchine...Dad just pointed out the correct tools to use and gave "pointers" on what, where and how to do it...
-
Nice job Sami !!! Hats off to you. My kids think i'm nut's stict with your dad and have fun and most important beat the boys. I do have hope for my 3 year old grandaugher. scott
-
Looks like the guys are in trouble out there! She has that lean an hongry look of a dedicated and very serious racer!! :D
-
Now hats a project that just makes a daddy's heart race!!! Good job Sami on your racer and Squidd for being a real Dad.
-
Great work sami, keep it up. Squid, Keeping my kids interested turns out to be the easy part.My 7 year old is my biggest fan,And my 16 year old is my "CREW CHIEF" I'd love to put him on my IMOW this year,But unfortionatitly the track we've been racing won't allow him to race under 18 years old , For that reason alone me and the neighbor(whom I race with) are looking into another track for next summer .Its not as nice, but they will let the boys race!! everyones afraid of being sued now days.
-
Tory is your club/track a USLMRA sanctioned event...? You mentioned IMOW...
If so you (16-17 yr olds) should be covered under national insurance regs..??(with parental consent forms filled and on file.)
If not, and your following US rules anyway...maybe talk the club (board) into joining...
-
Squid, Unfortionatly are track is not uslmra sanctioned, however we do use your rules as are guide lines.Weve dicussed it the last couple years, and are willing to sign any releases nessesary but they dont want to budge. As members of the club we do all pay a substantial membership fee to cover liabilty insurance, and could use the extra members to help out.I cant say I dont understand cuz I do.We live in a sue happy world where the actons off a few ruin it for the rest of us that just want to have fun at knowone else'e expense, but people sue at anyage. Its just to bad that such a nicely built well maintaned track may not open next year do to lack of members over this subject.(theres been other issues like everywhere else, but this one is a $1,500.00 differance in dues.) The good side however (if there is one) is there is another track to race at.Its not as nice and it means starting over on gearing on my SP (differant size and shape track) and I think there IMOW rules will change a bit. So we're not throwing in the towel yet.At least one more year before i youse the forsale section. Tory

So we've been working out in the shop again with the warmer weather...
Sami cut the mower deck sections and I welded them on...needed to "discretely" move the fenders to clear the wheels, but it's starting to look like something now...
We put the deck flush with the running boards to give a bit more foot room...
Underneath, we set the stock disk brake in it's raised position, this particular set up uses the chain sprocket as the brake disc...a couple new metalic pads cut to fit and they should be solid...
We also added a center brace to the axel...Trying to stay in the "low buck arena" I converted the stock "diff" to a straight 3/4" hardened splined axel.
Going 3/4" allows us to stay with the stock steel tires and wheels (rather than getting hubs and matcing rims for a 1" axel..as well as use the stock 3/4" bearings and hangers...
I know 3/4" is light duty...but then so is Sami...
If it bends, it's a $24 axel replacement...if it becomes a problem, we'll look into 1" axel/hubs/rims/bearing/etc...
Edit:Add Pic
I thought this would be harder than it was...Pulled spyder gears out cut a slot for the Key and tapped an allen screw in to hold it...
Instant gear hub... fits 3/4" axel and we can stay with all stock parts/tires/rims/bearings etc...
-
And of course she was "eyeing" my diamond plate chain guard....
So...What's a Racer without a little "Bling"...
-
Well now, :P: if that square box of metal under the front of the fender is "discreet" I put one heck of a lot of time and bondo into ours for the practice!!!!!!!!!!!
Well regardless, I've rather enjoyed the challenge of doing something like this that I've never done before.
Lookin GOOD Squidd!!!!!!!
Dale, in Michigan
-
Yeah, that was a late/last minute addition...more I look at it, less I like it too...
Look for something new in the next installment ...
That's what I like about building "on the board"...(or bringing fellow racers to the shop)...you can get a couple different views an observations...
-
And then you can build like I do. You don't want to show too many people ahead of time!
Like today.
I got most of the steering linkages and brackets welded up, tackwelded in place. Hmmmmm, something doesn't look right. So I flip it rightside up and set an engine on it.
DUH!!!!!!!
The linkage is SUPPOSED to be on the left. It's on the right. And hits the crank.
Crap. Grind that out and start over. LOL
Dale, can't tell left from right, in Michigan
-
Crap. Grind that out and start over. LOL
We do it "nice"...cause we do it "twice"...
Try to think of them as "experienced" parts... 8)
-
Well I have to admit, more than once I told myself, "If I had to do this again, I'd do this and that different." Guess what? I DO!!! LOL
Dale, no wonder he's slow, but like I tell everyone at work. The tortoise won the race.
-
There we go...
Not sure what I was thinking with the front riser (I told you it was late... )
Drop the front a tad and now we can use the stock mounting tab...seat still fits fine...
-
Hey Randy, I'm not sure if that will be a legal S/S mower. Reason being it must be built under the USLMRA SP class guidlines. My original SP was going to be built from that exact chassis, it was even orange too! George Herrin at the time was the USLMRA Head Tech and I emailed him photos of it. He stated flat out it was an illegal chassis for the SP class and would be legal for AP. Simply too short. I told him mine was exactly 39 3/16" long and simply stated "Didn't Fly" That's why I'm running the with the 42 1/2" MTD chassis. Don't mean to rain on your parade just giving you a heads up.

S/P rules state 39" minimum...
Why would 39 3/16" be too short??
George...?? :?
-
I went out and measured again this morning...I'm 39 1/2" easy....
You may of had a different chassis of some sort...??
Did the rule use to be 40" minimum...??
Sure like to know before I go to much further...
-
39 is legal the reason His was not was the way he did the front end. He went thru the frame front with squre tubing and mounted the axle to that and that was not legal it effewctively altered the wheel base even if not it looked as though it was. And axles should be mounted straight to the frame. Although things are different now. It is apparently ok saw some done that way this past weekend BUT the new rules will go into effect april 1st will wait to see what happens.
-
Whew...close one...
So the clouds clear and the parade goes on...
Sami will be VERY happy to hear this...
-
Well, Sami's back at it...
We had to (she had to) wait till it warmed up around here before she'd join me in the garage...(warm weather racer, I Guess.. )
But after mocking her S/S up she pulled it apart and started preping for paint...
-
You know those cans that say .."No Runs, No Drips, No Errors"...??
Ask Sami.. :x ...They LIED...
A little practice...a little sanding off and starting over...and she's starting to lay in some color...
-
Don't think I've seen a purple mower yet.
Looks like things are coming together pretty well though. It's cool that you've got a daughter who's into this stuff and not afraid to get her hands dirty.
-
Yeah, shes a regular little "wrench"...
Actually she signed up for a small engine class next year in school !!
Wonder what she's gonna bring for "Show and tell"...?? 8)
-
LOL!! I wonder what she's going to teach the teacher! /o:?
Actually that could be a very cool experience for a lot of the kids, and if handled correctly it could be an excellent method of generating interest on their part while in the class.
Then towards the end of the year, like the last day of school maybe, so the poor teacher didn't have to put up with any influence it might have upon all of the students, she could bring Darrin for show and tell! (o;?
-
Then towards the end of the year, like the last day of school maybe, so the poor teacher didn't have to put up with any influence it might have upon all of the students, she could bring Darrin for show and tell! (o;?
That would "definitely" be her last day...
So we better wait until the end of the school year...
-
Yeah, she might even want to wait until she has her final grade before bringing Darrin.
-
Right away you gotta bring me into this! LOL! Heck yeah I'll come for show and tell. Since I'm closer to their age then all you old farts! They'll see that any age bracket can be involved in this sport besides a bunch of dinosaurs! Always willing to help with childr's EDUKASHION!!

Hey Sand Box Jewel she'd definatley be better getting her final grade before bringing you in.
-
She might want to sign some sort of agreement that they wouldn't hold anything that transpired at show an tell against her for the remainder of her school life either! It'd be the :censored: to be banned from school for life for a show an tell exhibit gone wrong!!
-
Kinda sounds like my 6th grade Science Fair Exhibit Fiasco...
(Nobody told Me you weren't allowed to bring radioactive materials on school grounds...) (http://www.saltwaterfish.com/vb/images/smilies/shrug.gif)
-
I'm thinking they are probably better prepared to handle radioactive than they are Darrin!
-
Amen to that!!!
-
Hey what can I say, few brats and beers and I got my own type of flamable gases! There's show and tell!! Shut off the lights kids, ok turn on the bunson burner and watch this!!! LOL Just wrong, right away the Sand Box Jewel is going to jail for Arson!! Either way good luck to Sammi on the build and remind her she's got 2 months to Git R Dun! Also Hillbilly, you better have that SP ready with that special motor come IL Double header!! Make sure you put the face shield down because you'll be getting a face full of sand with this Jewel shaking in front of you!! Ha Ha. DP

A little something I picked up, at the Mn. Build Clinic...
With the steering link coming out the from under the mower deck, and not being a "front steer" model (like my mid engine A/P)...
The only way to get true Ackerman steering (dual link) is to add a Bell Crank...
This also keeps the steering linkage tucked up and in the main deck area rather than hanging down under the axel, where it can hang up and be damaged in the ruts...
-
Sorry it's all black on black...
This angle shows the pivot point a little better..
-
Time to start putting 'er together...
Built Sami's motor... S/S-J/P rules allow internal mods as long as motor runs a govener...
So Don Gienger built me a mild lift/long duration cam and Modified a Walbro carb...I did the porting and valve and spring work...replaced the rod with a 494504...honed and new rings...
Running a stock flywheel for "clutch" inertia on take off, should be a good running motor with solid torque...
Here it is on the break in stand...
Neat thing is..I brought Sami out this morning to start working on her ride and showed her the motor on the stand with the electric motor...
She said...."I know what your doing...Your breaking it in..."
How cool is that.. 8)
-
Getting into it...bolting 'er together...
Got the steering on and adjusted...Smooth and tight...Bell crank works great...
-
Sami put the chassis together and bolted on the fenders, tires and wheels...
I did the set up on the axel, chain and brakes...
Little tight in there, but all fits and rolls smooth..
-
Finished up the evening welding in the exhaust...
The other half of the pipe kit and parts from G-Team that I used on My A/P...I really like the convienience and layout of these kits...(http://www.saltwaterfish.com/vb/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif)
-
Now we just need to add Gas and Electrics...and she's ready to fire up...
Then some lettering and a new seat...And she's ready to hit the track for the first "test runs"... :D
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/Samis007.jpg)

Biggest problem I see is lubrication from the chain will keep getting on the brake pads which will reduce the braking ability. It will be a constant battle to keep brakes once they have the lube in the pads its about impossible to get it out for the brakes to work properly.
-
It was for this very reason I wound up adding complexity to Pony Express. The brake disk was just too close to the chain and sprocket. I ended up mounting the sprocket on the opposite end of the output shaft. The book says either side can be used as the driving end, and when torn apart both sides are identical, so I made the switch.
This also meant the chain didn't line up with the clearance slot in the transmission plate. Oh well! It just added some work to fabricate things on the opposite end. I still used the chain tensioner that came with the plate though.
Haven't worked on it in quite some time, other more pressing matters came up. Right now it's just about all back to the bare frame as I weld various components in fully instead of tacked in for checking purposes.
Dale
-
Good eye George...Had thought about that as we were cleaning up the old parts..
But I think I have a solution for that..Don't use oil...
Switched the pads to semi'metalics and plan on using a Citrus/Paraffin chain lube developed for cross country bike racing..
Sprays on wet, and drys to a coating that "supposedly" will not collect dust, build up or fling off and has better lubricating properties than petroleum based chain lubes...Comes with a special cleaner, you soak and wash the chain and then re lube between race days...
My boys used it when they were racing, and seems to work as advertised, kept the chain clean and low wear on their aluminum gears...and they ran thru mud and sand and water...
Will see how it holds up under power...Should be OK for a governed J/P "might even" be OK for heavier horse power..
-
Squid what and how is the electric motor used for during the break in? Scott
-
Break in or pre running is just that...a gentle running of engine to allow parts to wear in and rub against each other and get their final fit and finish...Before fireing up and racing..
No matter how smooth you hone a cylinder or grind a cam, or when adding new rings..there are sharp edged and imperfections (microscopic) that need to be broken down and rubbed in to get total seal and smoothness...
There are many ways and "theory's" on proper break in...slow idle, variable speed, run-cool-run-cool, etc...But I have found with electric motors and small gas and nitro powered engines (RC stuff) and confirmed by Dons Motor Building Video, that rather than running "under power" (firing it up) it's easier on the engine to add power (electric motor/belt) and spin the engine up allowing surfaces to mate and seal gently and slowly, without the heat and combustion "pressures" of a running engine.
I ran it for about an hour with the electric motor..then drained oil and repeated for another half hour...drained again and filled with racing synthetic...
First time I drained the oil was glistening with aluminum filings or dust...second time came out much cleaner..
Nice thing about doing it on a stand like this is, you can twist and turn the motor to drain out "All" the oil (and grit), getting it out from all the crevices and chambers in the pan...Something you can't do if it's mounted in your mower...
-
Thanks Randy thats what I though. I do have Dons video I think I dozed off at that time  (11:30 pm and had to go to work the next day) Guess I'd better watch it again.. .. Thanks Scott
-
Maybe so but I personally wouldn't trust it. But hope it works for you!!!
-
Goerge, please elaberate on what you wouldnt trust, and maybe suggest your break-in preferance.
-
The brake set up he is using. tranny leaks oil to some extent regardless of dry lube and the chain will get wet to some extent leaving oil on sprocket/brake rotor combo which will in time cause the brakes simply to not stop the mower. Just my opinion. As for break in method, I break them in on the track. (my personal Motors) A cutomer motor I do something very similar to what squidd does.
-
ya i had the same problem with my mower i had bought hydraulic brakes because i thought that the brakes just werent enuff to stop my mower so i went out and spent 280$ cad on a mcp brake kit and still woudnt stop it so i went to straight axel with a separate disc and holy crap  it stopped all right
-
Thanks for the heads up guys..I'll keep an eye on it...don't want to send Sami out witout good brakes...
If it becomes a problem I can change it out...
Was kinda thinking a 1" axel somewhere down the road anyway, in which case I'd have to seperate the brakes from the sprocket hub as well...
-
well being that u have a straight axel u can put a brake disk on the opposite side right and then mount ur mechanical brake caliper or do u not wanna do this because the brake pedal is on the right hand side
-
At this point no...
1. It's a J/P governed class, goes pretty slow and won't take much brake power to stop...I doubt they'll go out completely with out some warning time...
2. We're "purposely" going for the low buck approach, using as many stock (slightly modified) parts as possible..which includes the 3/4" axel, tire, wheel, bearing and brake combo...
3. Being 3/4" hardened axel, not sure how long it'll hold up, hoping a good long time, Sami is light and not running all "that" hard... but not willing to do much more unless I up grade to 1"axel, bearings, hubs and wheels...
4. Running the Foote Tranny with grease rather than oil...so dripping shouldn't be an issue...
5. I'm not cheap, and certainly concerned about the safety of my daughter, but remember this is an "experimental" ride...(she may not like it...)
If she sticks with it and runs 'er hard like a racer should, you can believe ol' Dad will have this upgraded in no time with my spare 700 trans, 1" axel, hubs, Hydraulic brakes, and "Shiny" Aluminum rims..
(then maybe pull the govener off, gear 'er up and run the S/P class myself)...shhh, don't tell Sami..... she's already "eyeing" my shiny rims...
-
lol alright just a suggestion and watch out daughters can be pretty persuasive when it comes to sumthing they want lol
-
I too understand low buck and experimental, but grease in any tranny at anything over stock speeds is a lock up looking for a place to happen. A good S/S mower will run 18 to 20 mph compared to a IMOW at 20 to 23. Just watch everything would not want her to get in an accident or have one due to the experiments then be turned off to racing forever. My oldest Boy Brandon did wasn't due to experiments he has the best of everything I could put in it at the time, he had some good sponsors but had the only S/S wreck of the year here. he and another racer got together sending both into a tumble. He wound up under his and that was the end of it. He finished the season but always fell back to last place cause he was scared and won't even get on it this year. Could happen to anyone whether the mower is built with the best of everything or not. Just be careful. watch her close ride it yourself to test it and take it out for a spin regularly to make sure its still holding up before she hits a race. That way you understand more of what its doing. I do it with my son's and hopefully if something fails or starts you will catch it or be on it and not her!!!
-
Hear you there George...sorry to hear about Brandon...
Having Fun and being Safe are the two most important goals of this "experiment"...Competing well and Finishing come in next and winning is a bonus...
Will take another look at the "reliabilty" ratios on the trans/grease vs. Brakes/oil issue...
I'm sure we'll be getting plenty of "testing time" in before the first race, and during the season to see how things are holding up...
Actually, upgrades are probably closer than I'm letting on...t this point want to make the Memorial Weekend "Opener" and if she's really getting into it I have almost a month to the next LC race to fine tune and up grade her J/P...
If she's not into it... I still have a month to upgrade and fine tune "My" new S/P..
(OK Fine...I've already started collecting "Shiny" parts.. )
-
Dang...Little problem...
Clutch pedal hits Air filter...Going to have to reconfigure (lower) pedal to clear and work out linkage/leverage to keep it easy to depress..
Probably for the better though...pedal is now 6"-7" above deck, which may be a bit high for her smaller foot..
Lowering it will make it easier to maintain contact...Probably adjust brake pedal on other side to match as well..
-
Hey man what kind of adapter are you using for that air filter I was wondering how to make one not sure if you can buy them right now I have a walboro card stockdo they make one for these?
-
Oh yea I am really enjoying the pics on sami's build up really cool thats she's even a little bit interested, And also really cool and informative to post the pics on here I look forward to the ones to come. :D
-
Squid, had the same problem on my SP, I dont know what the back side of youre filter looks like or what the adapter looks like.I fabed my own adapter then found the prob at assembly.I recut the adapter and put the filter at a 30 degree angle upward.(peddle was already pretty low)in the end it worked out good, and looks a little tricker.Id show you a pic but I would have to have my kids show me how to do that  if I could you'd see that I to went with purple, but my sponser is a custom paint shop that works on everything from harleys to semis and they got quite radical with the airbrushing. Anyway,at the rate your working Im shure you've made the repair by now and are moving forward.
-
The adaptor I got from Don at G-Team...aluminum, velocity stack ported to match modified carb venturi...
Air filter has 10* angle on it ..I turned and twisted ten ways from Sunday and the clutch pedal still hits...
Rather than mess with flow charicteristics of carb...I would rather reconfigure linkage to clear...
I can work the angles to maintain leverage and the lower position will fit Sami beter...
And No it's not done yet...
Just took the pics this afternoon and took the evening off from working on it...
Momma was looking at me kinda strange and said "Do I Know You...??" when I sat down to dinner tonight...
Figured I "better" spend a little quality time with the family tonight...
Have to wait till tomorrow to see the result..
-
if ur supposed to be spending quatlity time with the wife y are u online at 9:30
-
:D I think Matt's got your number on that one Squidd! :D
You'll find close ups on the air filter adapter here - http://www.g-team.us/carbs.htm
-
Way to call that one MATT!!!!
-
Hey... I said "a little"...
Don't want to spoil them you know....
-
LMAO!!
-
Lowered Clutch pedal to clear Air cleaner...Also gives better "toe to heel" response for Sami's smaller foot...Adjusted clutch link to even out foot pressure needed to operate...
Also lowered Brake pedal on other side to match...Making the mowchine "fit" and comfortable and easy to operate the pedals will go a long way in allowing Sami to concentrate on driving...Those things were awfully high even for me.. Now down to 4 1/2" off deck..
-
Installed throttle and cable, starter button and Kill Switch and tether..
If I can find a belt in town tomorrow (Sunday) and get the seat mounted...
May have to take 'er for a test spin.. 8)
-
Either that..or clean the garage a little...
-
nahhhhh u dont need to clean the garage till u cant see all of the floor
-
No point in cleaning the garage until the project's done because it'll only get dirty again, and also you won't be able the stuff you're working with.
The mower's looking great so far.
-
Slight adjustment to plans here...
While fireing up Sami's Stage 1 motor it developed a "slight" oil leak... http://www.heymow.com/viewtopic.php?t=593
So I pulled it and replaced with my back up IMOW stock motor... A good runing 13.5 hp with the 28R cam, starts great and runs consistant so I wanted to stay with stock carb...
Unfortunatly, I can't close the hood with the stock aircleaner so I need to go with the aftermarket filter...
Lot of guys asked about the "adaptor" on the stage 1 motor...which was an aluminum velocity stack for a modified carb...
This is more of a show than go trick, but the extra air can't hurt...
Took a 2 1/2" PVC Pipe cap...
Flattened the end to get a good seal...marked and drilled for bolt holes... opened up the carb inlet hole...then tapered and smoothed the inside for flow...
A little gasket sealer to seal it up and sand the outside to "rough it up" so the filter sticks..a $1 part and ten minutes with the Dremel and instant Air Filter Adaptor...
-
LOT less work if you buy the end cap that is already flat.
-
that s a pretty sweet idea
-
LOT less work if you buy the end cap that is already flat.
Suppose that depends on whats available in your area or local hdwr store...
Besides like Tina Turner used to say..."I never Ever do nothing nice....and Easy..."... 8)
-
LOL. Sounds like me too.
As long as it works and doesn't fall apart, it sounds like a plan to me.
The only thing I can think of that would be better than that cap you're using is finding something that had a conical inside so the incoming air had a smoother path..... but I definitely won't knock what works for ya because it's a heck of an idea.
-
Actually they do make exactly such a fitting in PVC but it's not something you're likely to find at Menards or Home Depot. If you go to a 1" or 1 1/4" threaded female x 2 inch male glue Adapter with 2 a inch glue coupling or at least I think that's what size Squidd had up there to get 2 1/2" outside diameter from the looks of the picture.
These adapters are considered a terminal fitting on the end of water distribution lines, where you reduce down to the Curbstop. They're tapered on the inside to reduce force exerted on the fitting in the case of water hammer or air in the line. Very nicely tapered the length of the adpater too!! Only problem is they typically have a groove in the casting around the threaded hole to allow it to give when tightening the threaded fitting into the PVC so it doesn't split the entire end of the fitting setting up catastrophic failure as a result of over tightening. By design, if you overtighten it splits the fitting around the threads only to protect the remainder of the fitting. And, said groove around the fitting would likely present problems in the mating surfaces.
If one could find a similar adapter in glue to glue rather than threaded, it is very possible that said adapter would have the taper and would not have the groove.
-
The bolts on the carb are set 2 1/8" center to center or 2 3/8" outside to outside...
So you need at least a 2" pipe cap (2 3/8"ID - 2 3/4"OD) to clear the bolts...and then you still need to do a little careful grinding inside the cap to clear the nuts on the bolts and get a socket in there...
Cap head screws would give a little in clearance there..But with the right bit and careful work with the Dremel...can save that cost and trip to Hdwr store...
They did have "flatter" caps in other sizes..but for some reason the 2" caps all had the "hump" on them...15 seconds on the belt sander and she flattened right out...
The 2" pipe caps have a 2 3/4" OD which matchs the ID on the Air Filters I had already purchased...
-
OK...There she is...
Sami's S/S-J/P mowchine...up and running and ready for Graphics and a new seat cover...
Got the clutch working smooth engagement...only had to go thru 2-3 idler pulleys to get everything at just the right tension with a standard sized belt...
Brakes are working great (at this point) lock the rear right up, but we will be watching for grease/oil on the disk...and upgradeing soon...
Still want to see how the 3/4" axle holds out...Held me fine for these "test runs" and I was bouncing pretty good on the ruts in the driveway....
Did have to switch engine pullys..7" and 7" gave a 8.5:1 ratio which would not have passed tech...So switching to 6" and 7" brings us to 9.75:1 which will be a little "slow" BUT (if my math works out) switching to a 9 tooth on tranny should bring us right into a 9.06:1 which will be right where it should for this class/rules...
Ordered sprocket today...
Graphics will be Vinyl, same as Rocky laid out for my A/P (ordered)...
And now the rest is up to Sami... :D
-
Everything looks good BUT if you don't oil that filter with some K&N oil the first dusty track you run you will be re-ringing it. Running it dry is no different than running without one.
-
oil that filter with some K&N oil
Check...
That, and I got the foam prefilter "bag(s)" that go over tthem...
-
Why put a good cotton/K&N type filter on it then choke it with a foam sock. Use the outer wear type pre filter cheap enough easy to clean and comes in many colors and they are designed for the cotton style filters with out restricting any air flow.
-
Actually, that is what is is...
A Nylon Outerware Prefilter..
Hadn't opened the bag yet to look at it...
(and yes, I have a little filter coming for the PVC breather tube too!!)
-
And in the meantime....
I picked up another 12 hp block for Sami's "Stage 2" motor...
Blew her's Sunday, found this Tuesday, picked it up Thursday..
Was "supposed to" have run when they put it away last fall..didn't start this spring...$20..and the lawnmower shop next door will give me $20 back for the tires and wheels!!
-
I just want you to know how much this is killing me. When I was maybe 12, I got an old huffy. I didn't know where to get pulleys, didn't have any money and couldn't weld so my modifications were limited to making a reclining seat and removing the hood so the steering wheel could be lowered. My dad wasn't about to say "I'll bet we could make that go faster", or even think it. Now, I've got a junk MTD and two wonderful boys, but somehow my dad's indifference to mechanical things was passed on to my boys, which is bad enough, but then I have to go through the torture of reading this thread.
I can't imagine anything more fun than building a pink and purple racing mower with a 13 yr old daughter.
Oh, no, wait. I can imagine something better; building one for me and one for her.
Thanks for the story.
jt
-
It's not "Pink"...It's "PLUM"...!!! (http://www.saltwaterfish.com/vb/images/smilies/flaming.gif)
And we did build matching racers...Now that her's is up and running I can get back to finishing my A/P...
-
Sounds like johntaves boys are pretty young yet I think that there is still time to instill some values in them my youngest boy was 4 when he drove his first go-kart. My most interested racer is 20 now and we have a lot of fun building and racing. So dont lose hope yet.
Its also good to see some girls interested those are going to make some good marriage material some day.
-
There is also something more rewarding than haveing you kid interested in lawnmower racing thats their first win on a cool mower ya'll built :D ,And if i could figure out how to post pictures on here i would
-
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i273/jrlawnmowerdad/Copyofpichandout2.jpg)
-
Fixed it...
Use the [img] tag rather than [url]...
Or do the Cut and Paste on the bottom line of the photobucket screen..
-
Thanks ,i thought i had it kinda figured out but it was time for a driving lesson  On a mower hes really good in a car he scare the crap out of me
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i273/jrlawnmowerdad/th_100_1876.jpg) (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i273/jrlawnmowerdad/100_1876.jpg)
Thanks again for fixing it for me
Chris
-
If you could ride on the mower he'd probably scare the crap out of you there too! It always looks safer from a distance than it does behind the windshield watching them large objects moving very close to you at alarming rates of speed!!
-
Your telling me my son did that to me also my finger nails inprints are still in the dash. lol Scott
-
I was wondering if there was any pics of Sami driving the mowchine or is she had a chance to drive yet.
-
Actually yes, and I do need to get some pics up....
You should see the "Grin" on her face...
We started "training" today...
First we do a few laps to warm up and then work on smooth take off, and the quick clutch, shift, and go...
Then later we'll work on holding the hammer down (longer) and weight shift and throttle steer thru the turns...
Then the Lemans start proceedure...
Then the whole "package" or routine...
Also had her adjusting the tie rods to tweak toe ...and check all linkages and operation of equipment...
She's taking to it well...as she becomes more familiar and comfortable with the machine..I expect lap times to drop significantly... 8)
-
You could always get Darrin to come up and coach Squidd!
-
Nahhh..I'm trying to teach her good habits....
Oh...you mean driving...
-
I'm biting my fingers trying to refrain from mentioning anything about car bombs!! Honestly, I am!!!
LMAO!!!
-
hello,
my name is sami. i am squidds daughter. i have a lot of fun with my dad in the garage but when i was driving my mowchine i went over a lot of bumps in the yard. i dont have a seat cushion so my butt still hurts. i couldnt drive it today because i had softball practice at 6 and dad had to flatten the driveway before that. driving my mowchine is fun and by the time i start holding down the throttle im gonna beat all the boys i race against(dad said i should say that)
-
who is Darrin :?:
-
LOL Who's Darrin, hmmm I think we'll have to let George answer this one. I'm sure he's got something that's been fermenting on the tip of his tongue!! Who is Darrin....besides a Sandbox Jewel!!!
-
Hey Sami!
Welcome to the MowBetter forum, and Lawn Mower Racing. Listen to your Dad, hold down the throttle and beat all the boys!! And, watch out for all guys named Darrin!
-
Unless they spell it Darrin with two R's then that's OK, those ones are the good ones. When they start spelling it with only 1 R their just half the man as the one's that use 2!
-
Hmmmmmm... You know if we just started calling you Sand Box Jewel all the time, then I'll always have the right number of Rs in it! That works!! And, EVERYBODY knows you gotta watch out for Sand Box Jewels! :D
-
who is Darrin :?:
Ummmm....
You know those "Guys" your Mom is always warning you about...???
(and she would know...she married one....) (http://www.reefmonkey.com/phpbb2/images/smiles/cool.gif)
-
Well said Squid I could not have explained it to sami any better!!!
-
what or who is Sand Box Jewel :?:
-
hey squidd
mom doesnt warn me about "guys", so i have no idea what ur talking about
-
sounds like it is time to have a real conversation with the family just about some of those other important things in life, besides lawn tractors.(I think there is more to life, maby I am wrong though)
-
hey squidd
Hey Squidd...???
Oh we're gonna have a little "talk" all right... :x
Out behind the woodshed..!!!... and somebody thought their butt hurt from rideing around with no seat cushion!!!
-
thank you for explaining it to me
DADDY
-
Sand Box Jewels are them little prizes the cats bury in the sand box, which is the same kind they bury in the litter box, if you know what I mean! You know the kind of prizes you really don't want to dig up.
Be very wary of father's wanting to talk behind the woodshed also!!
-
i know what you mean
-
We had our little talk (and no, not behind the woodshed... )
Explained all about "Guys" and "tried" to explain Darrin...( :? How do you explain Darrin.. ) actually I'm sure she'll get to meet him on the track...and then "She'll Know"...
So now lets talk "racing"!!! :P
To start, you gotta Start..that's where races can be won and lost...
So a couple rounds of "Key, Clutch, Start, Throttle, Clutch , Shift..." and she's getting the hang of it...
Once on the track it's "Hammer time"... Sami is getting MUCH better at holding the Go Lever ALL the way round the track... 8)
-
After a hard day of practice..Always good to take a little time and clean 'er up before putting 'er away for the next time... 8)
-
And THIS my friends...is what it's all about...
This makes it worth all the effort and time...
-
i dont like that picture
-
Just like a woman!!
Ummm yeah you're right Squidd no explainin' the Sand Box Jewel! Trust us Sami you'll just have to meet it to understand!
On the picture, it's kinda tough to look glamorous in a full face helmet and neck support... you're just supposed to look happy to be racin' which you look pretty happy to me, so it's a good racin' picture.
Now if you want to look glamorous, go put on your makeup, and put all them foo foos in your hair, and paint your nails so we can't see the grease under them, and do up a sexy pose in a nice dress next to the mower, before you get on it. 'Cause it's pretty obvious it takes that smile awhile to wear off after you get done ridin' and the helmet will mess with all your foo foos, not to mention you might chip a little paint on the nails trying to get the tether plugged in, and get started, and shifted and all that.
You look plumb beautiful in that helmet, don't you worry a bit darlin!!
-
i dont wear makeup and i dont put foo foos in my hair
i dont do dresses and i dont paint my nails
for your information
-
Sami your dad is a lucky guy to have you want to race with him I would be proud if one of my kids wanted to race with me. The smile on your face says it all good luck this year and beat the boys and post your winning pictures so we can enjoy them. Scott :D
-
i dont wear makeup and i dont put foo foos in my hair
i dont do dresses and i dont paint my nails
for your information
Hee Hee Hee.... Then what's not to love about that picture?
-
Carefull Rockey..she bites...
(I think she get's that from her Mom too... )
-
I just couldn't resist!
-
It's very satisfing to race against your kids especially on a mower that they built by themselves and you have to work hard to keep up. I guess I taught them too much, should have kept a few secrets to myself.
-
i think dad's gonna need to work especially hard to even keep up :D
-
Just watch out us old guys tend to play dirty

-
lol well your tractors alsome.
-
Have you completely finished your mower yet ? Would like to see the final product, been following the build up from the beginning. :D
check the eighth page
-
lmao welcome to page 10 all
-
We did get the seat padded...
Haven't got the graphics yet though...That and the "stickers" and pinstripeing should really dress it up,
But the vinyl guy ain't moving none too quick... :x
-
are you talkin about me :?
-
Sami I saw the mowchine on page 8 , But I was wondering if you had all the #'s on it yet, but your dad cleared that up for me.
-
are you talkin about me :?
No ..the vinyl guy, that's supposed to get me the "sample sizes" so we can make sure everything fits...before he prints them up...
-
gotcha 8)
-
You two are slipping... we haven't seen a picture since page 8!
-
It's rained almost every day since last weeks pics... And 2"-4" of snow on Thursday and Friday...and raining today... :x
But, I should have something up on the AP soon..(My butt hurts...I need a seat cushion.. )
-
Squid,my son has started racing my IMOW for me this year and we are having a ball.He acually won the feature at are first race last week and is hooked for life. Not quit ready to move him up and race against each other yet though. He kicks my but in NASCAR heat in a bad way.Im not ready for that imbaressment at the track yet.
-
Well that's cool that he's into it...
And them dang video games...we'll never be as qick as the kids...
But as far as him embarrassing you out on the track...remember the the "advice" we got back on page 9...

You know I found a joke to that effect the other day on another forum....
Skinny Dipping
An old farmer in Florida had owned a large farm for several years.
He had a large pond in the back, fixed up nice; picnic tables, horseshoe courts, and some apple and peach trees.
The pond was properly shaped and fixed up for swimming when it was built.
One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn't been there for a while, and look it over. He grabbed a five gallon bucket to bring back some fruit.
As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee.
As he came closer he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his pond.
He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end of the pond.
One of the women shouted to him, "We're not coming out until you leave!"
The old man frowned, "I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the pond naked."
Holding the bucket up he said, "I'm here to feed the alligator."
Moral: Old age and cunning will triumph over youth and enthusiasm every time
-
   thats a good one !!!!
-
was there really an alligator :?:
-
Yeah Rocky...Was There...??? (http://www.saltwaterfish.com/vb/images/smilies/scratchchin.gif)

-
OH Sami  no there wasn't really a gator :D Have your Dad explain that one!!!! Guys yall edumacating this kid TO fast  I would love to be a fly on the wall when she does ask Dad all these new questions now that she's hangin out here with all you GUYS!!!!
-
he already told me
-
You remember that practice session the other day when your dad said you slipped, but you said he pushed you.... same sorta deal almost!
Just don't go skinny dippin, then you don't have to worry about the alligators, or dad gettin grumpy!
-
That's a good one Rocky.....especially now, we've had three fatal alligator attacks in Florida in the last week or so.
Jack
Hard Case Racing
-
Having been born and raised down there in North Florida, and my pa having 2 fish ponds on the farm, grandpa having had one on his farm for years, and several more in the neighborhood, it obviously hit home since it was something dad or grandpa would have come up with under similar circumstance! :D
-
Finaly got the graphics...Now Samis ready to race... 8)
-
And, he even put it on Sami's hood... now I know I have to!! :D
-
hey I put the stickers on
(except the Jeg's, yellow does not go with purple)
-
Yeah, but they supplied you with a neck brace and a couple other pieces for your and my mowchine...so we're gonna fly their colors..
-
:D Awesome looking mower Sami :!: :!: wish you all the luck in your racing career
-
Sooo... A nice Sunny warm Saturday afternoon and Sami says to me ...
"Dad, I want to run my mower...!!!"
So I says to her...
"I got a BETTER Idea...!!!"
"How would you like to run MY Mower..??!!"
 :D
Sami's like ..."You Bet, Dad...!!!"
So I fired it up and sent her out on it....
-
For some reason...
She doesn't look as "Thrilled" as I thought she would be..?? :? :?
Bwuah Haa Haaa Haaaaa
-
Hey Sami... you by chance remember that story about the alligator?? :D
You gotta watch them old guys, they're kinda sneaky! Hee Hee Hee!!
Oh yeah, next week you need to sand that mower down and paint it to match the other two.
-
I am thrilled

whats up with that
-
whats a fugarwi :?
-
...dads second place trophy was bigger than my first place trophy :x
whats up with that
Ummmm...I'm "Taller" than you...so they have to give us bigger trophy's to look proportional in the pictures....
I want to thank the WILMRA Chapter for taking the initiative to implement these classes (J/P and Kid Stock) into the race program...
Hat's off to you guys...
While there may have only been two in this race... I know of one more machine that is built and two or three guys mentioned in the pits "Hey we gotta build one..!!" So look for mower Mowchines (and mower competition for you, Sami) in the very near future..
There were 5-6 Kid Stocks running (age 7-12) and you could tell from the "determined" looks on some of their faces these "Feeder classes" are going to bring many new racers to the bigger classes as time goes on...
Still a super turn out and super fun for all involved..!!! :D
-
Great job Sami!
I just feel bad for the boy you beat...he'll proabably go home and brag to his buddies about how he got 2nd place. Then when he's asked about how many were in his class and who beat him. I can just see his face getting red.
-
Well now...he (Dylan Klimpke) did a great job too.. and has a "well earned" second..
Just wait until they get 4-5 mowchines out there and start mixing it up a bit..
-
I'm sure that he did a good job driving his racer as well. I just know how some kids are when they are in an activity that others can't or are unable to participate in. They sometimes get a little bragadocious about their accomplishments. No harm was intended from my comment.
-
How fast is Sami's machine? Or dont you know the top speed?
-
Sorry... Top Speed is Top Secret Classified information...
(but if you care to do the math, it runs a 9:1 ratio at 3650 rpm with 16" tires... )
-

I know you ment no harm...and if he phrases it right...
" I took second...My first time out..." that's all he needs to tell them...
Kinda like when I took first in the state with my RC gearbox Modified Sprint Car...
...of course there were only two others in that class and one broke out...but you don't need to know that.....

sami.... a fugarwi is my race team name in australia.... :D

have a look .....

After seein sami havin a blast on the track now gotta get dustins ready for some racing. Dustin says we gotta pit next to randy more often. I'm sure he's talking bout the cool looking machines in randys stall

Sami went out for the second race of her career... 8)
Had fun on the practice laps....We sent the J/Ps and Kid Stocks out to pack the track after watering...
We decided J/P stands for "Junior Packer"...
Lining up for the Main Event !!!
Sami did well, took off and had the lead at the start, but spun out on turn 2...(we were racing on "Crushed Granite"...) so they restarted the race...
This may have thrown her off her game and second start was a little more "cautious"...
Pulling out third, she did move up to second, but you could see she was running a "careful" race to hold her position...(that's good thinking Sami !!)
Good job Sami !! Next Race...Medford...at Night...Under the Lights... 8)
-
lmao sweet u should put on some underglow led's on that mowchine

Way to Mow Sami!! :D

Yeah, we're thinking maybe "Glow Sticks" and zippy ties under the deck...
Wonder if you can get them in "purple"...??

Of course you can!!!

-
Sami's got her "game" back... :D and another win for the trophy rack...
Went to Medford to race under the lights...
Sensing a little "trepidation" we had a good long "strategy" talk as we walked the track...noting the surface and location to enter and exit the corners...
Feeling a little more "in tune" with the track after that...Sami went out, ran hard on the start, and ran a good line...
Being a Dad, I though she may have been going a little too fast thru the chicane and cutting the bales a little too close... ..But that's the line I showed her and she ran it well...
Good Job Sami...!!! (and good cooking in the pits...(http://www.saltwaterfish.com/vb/images/smilies/yummy.gif) )

after the race at amherst me and dad went on the zippr at the fair
 this was dad but with a much smaller smile

Oh yeah...almost forgot about that....
Racing at a "Fair" venue is cool...after the race you can pig out on Corn on the Cob, and Funnel Cakes and walk thru the midway...
Just be sure to do that AFTER you ride on the Zipper...not before...(http://www.subvertcentral.com/forum/images/smiles/crazy.gif)
-
Hey my little brother is looking into going into that class here i wisconsin for next year could u get me the rules for this class
-
go to the wilmra web site and look under rules for 2006
-
Check this thread out... http://www.heymow.com/viewtopic.php?t=280
It gives a detailed description of the class along with some explaination and clarifications...
WILMRA "modeled" it's rules after these, so if you build to them, you will be Legal at a WILMRA event...

when i was four my dad turned my barbie car into a r/c car and let me drive it around his track with the barbies still inside.
i'll tell you what i want:
a 390 cam
and dual spring roller rockers
-
and a billet wheel
-
Sami for a s/s mower I think a ISKY #3 would suit you better. But having that billet wheel sure will give you the bling bling any girl desrves.

Sami a young lady with verry few words. Your doing good racing this year tell us about it. Scott

i had an awesome save yesterday at the race in hayward and i would have had second but my rpm was 3670 so i got 4th
-
nine days
-
Sami, that was an awsome save , i dont think that there are any of us out there that could have done any better job saving that thing .
she was hit a little and had it side ways half way down the track , the track wasnt any thing to right home to mom abought ether , threw the mogals and ramp at the end of the strait into the corner and got it under control .
GREAT JOB DRIVIN , SORRY ABOUGHT THE BAD LUCK WITH THE RPMs!!!!
-
You don't know how hard it is for me NOT to fill in the blanks and write up "Sami's Racing Adventures"...
But Hayward was a classic...
Usually Sami's mowchine behaves well and all we do is gas 'er up and race, but this time she had a problem with her chain binding...
Going out for the National Anthem and the tranny locked up...
But she is a little trooper and had it up on the stands and the tools out as soon as we were back to the pits...I pointed out the problem, and "she" pulled it apart and fixed it..!!! (no help other than "direction")
The race was cool..track was a bit ruffed up from the Demo Derby the night before and she needed a little pumping up to get out there "assertively"...
Coached her on the importance of a quick start in a governed class and "being in the right place at the right time" ...meaning keep your nose in his tail to make your move when it's time...
Little "twitch" with the kill switch got her out second, but she held it HARD... Mowchines are very well matched, but when coming up on lapped traffic there presents an opportunity..
On the White flag Lap, First place went wide and Sami pulled the inside of a lapped mower...would have pulled it off too..!! but I'm thinking the lapped guy got a little nervous with the outside pass and pulled in just as Sami was making her move...
Got 'er sideways and "T" boned at speed in the corner...with the bumps and still counter steered out of it got straightened out in time to hold position for second...
(Good Driving Sami...Nice save)
But we do have a 3650 rpm limit for governed class's and when checked was running 3670...20 rpm over, but with a Zero tolerance policy (even for sami) she was DQ'd from the position...
With the working on the chain and my carb coming off in the feature, we missed the fine tuning we usually do just before the race and weather and temp has an effect on goveners..Next time she will have a "Post it" note on the Dash to check RPM before the race...
-

ahem
I found the problem
and what direction "take that out and i'll be back after i win my race."
(thats basicly what he said)

Yeah..well...ummm...How much more "direction" do you need..???

HAPPY BIRTH DAY!!!!!!!, what kind of transmission are you running on your mower?
-
Sami's out of town this weekend, (church campout) so I'll answer her question...
It's a Foote 3 speed...not the best or most desireable tranny in the world, but it's what cam with the mowchine...
If you check back a couple pages you'll see where we discussed it's life expectancy and a couple modificatins we did to stock differential to make it a live axel setup...
Been running well all season, with no trouble so far, but then this is on a goverened class mowchine...9:1 ratio and 3650 rpm...and Sami is kind of a "light" weight racer so it hasn't seen a lot of torque, speed, pressure or abuse...
Haven't seen anyone running one in the higherpowered/higher speed prepared classes...
-
thats wut i have in my black flame mower, with 3/4axel only broke once outta 4 years, i think they hold up better then a 700,
brandan
-
You ain't apllied real hp to it yet then.
-
All my tractors run that type of tranny,i put two 700 in that blue tractor in 5 mins of easy drivin, stepped on it tiwce, and ripped the bushing and half casing apart.mean while my 3 speed foote i had in it the week before lasted 2 years of hard driving, and only changed it because the the 1 little gear was worn out to much.didnt wanna risk breakin it during a race.
brandan
-
just because a bushing failed dont mean the trannys are junk one done that to me b4 and i still swear by them
-
Well I am pushing 50 hp with over 50 ft lbs of torque and have yet to break one. Never broke a shift key and until this year never run anything but the two key trannies. In 6 years of running two BP's a year I have broke only two one was a 5th gear internal failure the secoond broke a lower case and it had two years of hard racing on it. A foot wouldn't hold up to one full throttle start on mine. You may be lucky but I have yet to see one hold up in a racer. And if yours had a bushing fail it was bad to start with or didn't have proper lubrication. cause they don't fail if they have lubrication. They hold up better than the needle bearings. They litterally out last the input needle bearings in my tranny's.
-
In my blue mower i had to replace the 700tranny aleast 5 times because of broken shift keys, broken cases, the side of the case riped apart at the bushins on both sides of the out put shaft on three of them and the bottom input ripped clean off.my foote never had a problem.I change reverse in to a four gear, and put needle bearing on the input shaft. and lasted alot longer then a 700, 700 usaully lasts 2 runs if not less. thats my experance with them.
brandan

When you tried the 700's did you remove the reverse chain?
oh, and awsome mower sami!
-
i guess i can use my 3 speed foote since you sed it hold up good. i am currently building a huffy broad lawn racer mower. Its gonna have a 8 hp briggs and stratton and the stock 3 speed foote that came wiith it. I cant wait till i get done.

Lining up at Hayward...

Like I said eariler, "Holds up well on a lower powered governed mowchine with lightweight racer..."
8 hp doesn't have the kind of torque that the 12s and twins do, but if you pull the govener and start winding them up and putting pressure to them, don't be suprised if the Foote doesn't hold up...
I've been inside both of them, and with the tiny 3/32nd keys and just weak the way the Footes put together there really isn't much comparison...
The 700s have a "few" weak points, but built as George had described in the 700 Build Up thread, while they may not be "bullet proof" they have a much better chance of making it thru the entire season and not letting you down...
On the other hand..run what you got till it breaks...and in the meantime, keep an eye out for a 700 (or two)
-
Sami had a good season and really has the racing "Bug"...
From building her own mowchine to maintaining it during the season to "running it like she stole it" to helping out with trophy preparation, she always showed an excitement and willingness and interest in the sport...
Sami finished a close 2nd at the Prentice finals..and 3rd overall for the season...
Congratulations SAMI !!! (http://www.saltwaterfish.com/vb/images/smilies/cheerleader.gif)(http://www.saltwaterfish.com/vb/images/smilies/cheerleader.gif)(http://www.saltwaterfish.com/vb/images/smilies/cheerleader.gif)
On the ride home we were already making plans for next season...
"How long until I can run a big mowchine...?"
Well, she's 14 now (and we all know when her birthday is... ) So one more year of J/P and then Mid season the following year she'll be Moving up..
She'll be pretty much running an IMOW type mowchine next year..so she's thinking that pretty Purple A/P should fit her "Just about right"...
-
Firsat off Insurance policy is IF said birthday is before july 1st they may start the season in class they would be moving up to if it were after JUly 1st. Second talk to your club here (MTLMRA) if said 14 year old has one complete year of S/S or J/P which ever its called of racing experiance said 14 year old may race A/P ONLY. 14 year old may not start in A/P ever. They must run one full season in the S/S or J/P as you call it before do so. We been doing this two years now and its on the local level only.
-
Cool..I'll run it by the powers that be here...See how they feel about it...
On the other hand... (http://www.saltwaterfish.com/vb/images/smilies/scratchchin.gif)
She can wait a year... I might want to run another season of A/P...
-
ill turn 16 at the end of may so could i start out in any class for the 07 race season. i have been racing in a outlaw club for the passed 2 years and would like to bump up to like the sp class. thanks
-
I think like George said...
We been doing this two years now and its on the local level only.
You will have to check with your Local organization...
-
Hey Squidd, where did you get the linkage for this?
I need to fab up and weld on a bell crank on the Wizard (I found out today the hard way, after welding up multiple linkage setups) Keep in mind I live in the middle of nowhere, so I only really have a ghetto hardware store and NAPA to buy parts from
-
3/8" x 3/8" Heim Joints..NAPA might be able to order them, but the beauty is, your on line now and can order them from ACME, G-Team, Mc Master Carr, Grainger, ASP, or any of a dozen different locations...
-
This is a nice ride! Wish I could race my MTD around my neck of the woods.

Yeah, I order about 80% of my stuff from the net, thanks man!

hello everybody
-
HEY!!! :) were u been ur dad has had to keep ur thread up all by himself :P
-
been a little busy
300 some days left :D
-
just checking out samis race machine and realized that the mowchine I picked up is a wizard which would make great race mowchine for the wife.picked it up from a friend and he couldn't remember what it was.
-
Makes a cool little Mowchine...
At 39" will fit A/P, IMOW and S/P minimum...
Little short for C/P or B/P
Little lighter, shorter and smaller overall than most...
-
Squidd,
your PLUM a/p machine is out of this world cool!!!!
that thing is SWEET!!!!
-
Thanks...Been a fun little ride all season.. Don's 22 makes plenty of power for that little chassis...
Just can't wait till next year when I run a similar sized F/X with close to twice the power!!!

OK with the 07 Season coming up. weather getting warmer (relatively) and the advent of the "New" IMOW rules...WILMRA has decided to change S/S specs to match IMOW specs and allow these to run as "Dual Class" Mowchines
Sami and I decided to convert her S/S to the New IMOW Specs...8:1 gear ratio is the biggest change..."Stock appearing motor is another and while we're in there we're pulling the gear box steering and going direct...
Of course, we had to give 'er one last run in the snow before we started pulling 'er apart.. :woo:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/th_SamisSS.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/SamisSS.jpg)
-
Starting with the "easy stuff".. We pulled the K+N style aircleaner and went to installing a "stock appearing" unit..
Eariler in the build (last year) we had tried this but the large air filter box hit the hood...not wanting to cut it, we went with the K+N...
After pulling a few motors apart, I have amassed a good bit of parts, and one of them was a "shorter" version of the Air Box than originally on the motor...
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/th_AirCleanerHousing.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/AirCleanerHousing.jpg)
It also runs a slightly shorter air filter, but with the stock goverened motor and a clean fresh filter and sock..I don't see it as creating a breathing problem...
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/th_Filters.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/Filters.jpg)
Installed on the motor, It fits almost perfectly, the hood does close, but it does "touch" the cleaner housing... Raising the front hinge points 1/4" should provide plenty of clearance...
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/th_AirCleanerHood.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/AirCleanerHood.jpg)
-
cool and what dos Dual Class mean??
-
The "IMOW" class is a stock motored restricted gear and goverened speed prepared chassis class..for adults..
The S/S or J/P (Junior Prepared) class is the same but for kids 12 to 15...
By having the rules the same for both...It allows Sami to run in the J/P class and I (or someone else) can run the Same Mowchine in the IMOW class .(Dual Class)
It promotes Father/Son (daughter) participation in the race program at the same time holding costs down by allowing one mowchine to run in two classes a day..
All about promowting the sport and gettin mower people involved in sanctioned racing...
-
It promotes Father/Son (daughter) participation in the race program at the same time holding costs down by allowing one mowchine to run in two classes a day..
All about promowting the sport and gettin mower people involved in sanctioned racing...
That is one of the main reasons I have grown to love this sport more and more.....
It's one of the few (if not the one and only) motorsports that promotes joint FAMILY activity.
In this day and age we all know how precious time is. For those of us with kids we know it even more so. With responsibilities growing by leaps and bounds it becomes harder and harder to find good family time anymore. Both parents work, work is more stressfull than ever before, bills keep climbing and most people just don't take the time to be a family anymore. It's sad, but true.
Groups like USLMRA and ARMA know that it is more than just racing.
It is FAMILY.
-
AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
First thing we needed to do was get the motor out to get to the gear box...
Working from top and bottom is the easiest and working at chest level rather than laying on the floor has always been mower comfortable for me...
Not having a cool dude fork lift to raise Sami's Mower...I had her do it..
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/th_SamiLift.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/SamiLift.jpg)
Couple bolts and a couple wires and the motors out... Here is the gear box we're pulling to replace with direct steer set up...
Not the worst set up it does have solid steel tapered gears and a tension bolt to remove slop and play...but it still had the "two turns" of the wheel lock to lock and we wanted something with a little (lot) more control...
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/th_OldBox.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/OldBox.jpg)
All that stuff comes out and the new shaft runs straight thru top to bottom...
-
Pencil marks show where clutch linkage and tabs go, (and will have to be modified to clear...) Shaft in place for test fit Pitman arm will be fine tuned in final instalation...
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/th_Bottom-1.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/Bottom-1.jpg)
Simple pipe cut on angle holds lower flanged bearing in place.. (thanks George for the tech tip) Lock collars will be added to hold shaft and bearing in place..
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/th_Bearing.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/Bearing.jpg)
-
:D
Looks great so far.
Are you guys using ATV batterys?
Cause it sure looks like it!
-
Just an FYI for anyone with mowers employing this type of factory steering wanting to build direct steering into race mowers that will be competing in the USLMRA,
(not sure about ARMA or otherwise).
Notice the exact spot where Randy/Sami placed the steering shaft through the stamped steel frame?
For those that wish to do this it must be done in such a way that it would have been in the stock location if it had come from the factory.
So with the stock shaft in place as from factory, imagine if you will the shaft extending through the frame and locate it in that spot as shown in the pictures above, not 2,3,4 inches forward, back side to side... so as to give you an advantage in steering angle.
(I learned that one from George himself)
-
Good point Lee...
That's what the whole "adjust and modify clutch linkage" thing is about...would have been a whole lot easier to move it forward a couple inchs....
But we'll make it work...still a lot nicer setup than the steer and gear..
-
On the IMOW---J/P class and using the same mower....
It was posted earlier on another website that our the USLMRA nationals race down in Avon Park on March 31 & April 1 will feature a J/P class. This class will not be for national points but will run in-between the heat and main features of each day and will have trophies awarded.
I can't think of a better way to get the whole family involved and have a great time!!!
-
Another FYI, for USLMRA rules the steering shaft must go through the stock location in the Dash, not through the frame. If you're building a chassis where the shaft was behind the motor it's gotta stay behind the motor. Doesn't have to be in the same hole location though. That was clarified by Jim Witt USLMRA tech last year. So as far as the shaft goes it can go a few inches forward or back or to the left or to the right of the stock hole location in the frame as long as it comes out on top in the exact stock location in the dash. The BP of Don Gienger's I drove for the 06 season had the steering shaft a few inches away from the stock hole under the mower. But Jim said all that matters is that it comes up through the dash in the stock location.
-
I stand corrected.
That is not the way George explained it to us at the first Build Clinic we did in MN.
If I remember correctly you were there too D.
However, if Jim Witt has since changed the thinking on that one then that's the way it is.
How did you do last year on Don's BP ?
If I remember you had a good finish at the USLMRA finals.
-
Yup it has been since changed, Fact after that build clinic Don called Jim due to the fact his was moved, and got it approved. I had forgot that. For the longest it had to be in original location top and bottom.
-
That's what I always thought too, I wanted to make sure it was legal before I raced it. Just because person A get's away with something doesn't mean person B will...so I also emailed Jim on it and he only cares that it comes out the top through the stock locatoin in the dash. Myself to be safe and race anywhere, I'd run the shaft through the stock hole locations through the dash, tunnel and out the bottom through the exact same holes the stock steering went through. Better to be safe than sorry. That's just my 2 cents though
-
Even though it is a "bit" more work, it will fit and "feel" right when done...
Otherwise the wheel would have been tipped "back" as the shaft moved forward...
On this one, I just have to "trim" the clutch plate the pulleys ride on, so not a big deal...Had I done the steering before the clutch, I would have just relocated the clutch to clear...
Either way not a big deal..
-
Squidd
Little bit off the subject, but relates to steering... What kinda of rod or round stock do you use for your tie rods. Don said he used Schedule 80 pipe when I asked him what he used. I was looking at yours and it looks to me like it is round stock. What size do you use?
Sorry for being off subject, just trying to get something strong enuf for my new build! Waiting on parts is a drag >:( Its got me bouncing off the walls.
Thanks Squidd

I have been reading through this thread trying to find an answer to my question before I ask it.If it's there I missed it, but the question I have is about the 3 speed FOOTE gear box that cam with Sami's mowchine.
I just picked one up yesterday, (mower with tranny), and am making an A/P build out of it for my son.I have never used a FOOTE before especially a gear box.Has hers held up fine? Would you have changed it if you were making a faster class mower out of it?
-
Yes and yes...
We used the Foote, ONLY because it came with the mower and it was mentioned early in the thread this was a "low dollar" build (we weren't sure if Sami would "stick" with it (she is !!) and the plan is to..."Lube it up and run it till it blows" So far in the "govenered class" it has held up..
This year it will be geared up "slightly" to 8:1 and run in both J/P and a few IMOW demos.. so will see how it holds up...second year running.
We do have a backup tranny (foote) to finish the day/season, BUT
If I were to build a "prepared class" mowchine out of this (when we upgrade to Modified motor) it WILL have a new Tranny most likely a full race prepped 700 as they have proven themselves more durable and likely to survive the higher HP and torque.
-
Now..for an A/P build...we're getting borderline on reliabilty
Little 8s don't have near the torque as their bigger brothers so there is "some" survivabilty factor there..For a mild build it "might" hang a season..??
But if you build a "Killer" 8, like Don's 22 Special, or a bored and cammed thumper techumpsa that turns hard, you will be better served by a 700...
-
Hey Ted , If you need a couple mower of them Foote's I have three or four of them . Your welcome to them if you would like them just pay for shipping .
Better to give them to you than throw them out if you can use them .
-
I guess I should of payed more attention I just threw out 2 of those trannies .wasn't sure if anyone raced them .
-
Most of the time they aren't raced , but in a IMOW or similar app. they will work for a while .
Have even heard of a very few people that have ran them in a faster class .
-
We are going with Don's 22, just talked to him earlier in the week and he convinced me that it would be a blast to turn...You were in the convo Randy and I won't give the details but it took him about 5 words for me to know who he was talking about...
Don't worry...All good words...
When you take a 6'4 man and put him on a itty-bitty A/P, he kind of sticks in your memory. Not exactly how Don put it but you get the general idea.
I have another 700 we will use then, I was hoping to save it for a spare...
-
Squidd
Little bit off the subject, but relates to steering... What kinda of rod or round stock do you use for your tie rods. Don said he used Schedule 80 pipe when I asked him what he used. I was looking at yours and it looks to me like it is round stock. What size do you use?
Just noticed this... It's 9/16" rod that I drill and tap for male end heims.. Could use 1/2" but I have a couple miles of 9/16" laying around, so that's what I use..
Check my F/X build for pics, and I thought I did a tie rod "build" in the chassis section, but can't find it at present..???

Found it..It was part of another thread...http://www.heymow.com/index.php/topic,2021.0.html

Yep, It moves me right along...Produces a good bit of torque...
If I was "jockey sized" it would really be a trip.. Actually Sami's looking to run it as soon as she's eligible...
-
Hey Allen,
Are those Foote transmissions a Transaxle 5 speed setup like the one pictured below? If so and Ted doesn't get all of them, I'd throw ya a few bucks plus shipping for one of them so I can have a spare once mine blows up! I just like these because they're cheap and I can replace mine in about 10 minutes.
-
Hey..I got one of those looking for a good home..!!
-
Yup- that's what I've got! So... if you want to sell er, let me know and I'll send you my address. Thanks Squidd.
Oh by the way- is there a better way to crack the cases on these things? I must have spent an hour trying to get mine apart. Whatever glue they use to seal them up is rock-hard. Had to pour boiling water on mine.
-
and one last thing. Are the axles on that tranny pretty long? Can't tell from the pic. I can't recall right off the top of my head how long they are on mine, but I would guess at least 6", maybe even 8" sticking out.
-

propane torch? just like when your trying to get loctite undone
-
PM me, guys...
I don't do "free", So a couple bucks over actual shipping makes it worth digging out, boxing up, getting the tape, weighing it and dropping it off at a shipping point...
-
Send me an email. Didn't see your PM there. No problem with sending a little extra. Looks like generic UPS ground would be around 25-30 bucks assuming it weighs around 20 pounds.I couldn't remember which state you were in. Michigan?
crap. it says " WILMRA" on your avatar! Wisconsin then.
-
Got the bell crank and steering done today..
Had to move bellcrank to center of axle and make new tierods, but now everything is smooth and even....

great work buddy, looks like one real nice mower ;)
-
Thats one hot mower Sami 8)
-
Got the rest of the mower together, Sami was out in the shop bolting in her motor while I was helping Lilgeneral01 get his frame preped for welding...
We got the 8:1 ratio to with in a 1/2" of perfect, and got some tweaking tricks to get it "exactly" on at 8:1...
Hood was raised a 1/4" in front to get "stock" air cleaner to fit as this may be run as a dual class mowchine (IMOW and J/P)
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/th_SamiHood.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/SamiHood.jpg)
-
I have a tractor very similar to this one and i and having trouble finding a good place for the clutch since there such small mowers and i wondered if this clutch setup worked out good for you and was wondering if it would be good enough for SP to. Thanks
-
As a two pulley clutch it works well. It is actually the stock clutch, stock position, pivot point and front (V) pulley... we just removed the larger front idler and replaced it with a smaller unit as shown...
-
squidd, after looking over these pictures, is there any frame reinforcements made to the chassis?
-
No "major" reinforcement rails or anything like that...... Frame was gone over and any stress cracks were welded and short reinforcement plates were stratigicly placed, but no angle iron or tubes running full length..
-
Looks good, great job on it and congrats for winning! And what is the age cut off for the classes? 16 right?
-
12 to 15 actually.... Once your 16 you can run regular USLMRA classes....
-
Iam 16 so thats good. Do you have any info you recommend? Like videos or articles that are good about racing? Cause I am the only one around here that is going to race mowers.
-
I would reccomend all the info on this forum. Just read around and you'll find pretty much everything you need to know.
-
its been awhile since ive been on
-
you didn't forget about us did you :woo:
-
Have you been racing?
-
I have just read this thread. Sami, you got one sweet mowchine and an awesome Dad. well done to both of you..
-
Sami has her sights set on something bigger...
Last race Fifield she won her heat and 2nd in the feature....

Squidd,
checking out Sami's clutch ,which is the same one that I have in Sarah's ,Do you have any problem with slippage under load ? Only thing I can figure that it is setup on wrong side for sarah's .tried different ideas with the clutch .No matter how I try to do it , the clutch opens up under load .I almost to the point of scrapping this mowchine . It has been nothing but a headache .
-
Bigger spring.. ;)
Yeah they are set up bass ackward, but Sami being light and once again a governed motor, system works for what its pulling....
-
where did you buy that 3/4 inch axle?
-
Mcmaster-Carr
http://www.mcmaster.com
-
ok. thanks squid. now i just need to learn how to find stuff :P
-
and are you having any problems with it bending?
-
As discussed several times in this build up.... this is a goverened class mowchine for a lightweight driver... so the 3/4" axle and foote tranny have held up well for two seasons now...
For a prepared mowchine.... more hP or a heavier driver go with 1" or 1 1 /4" axle and 700 setup for reliabilty....
-
ok, one last thing (i think)
i have a mower just like that and was wondering why you didn't add any frame rails for strength.
was it because of rules, or a "light duty" driver?
-
Two seasons ago when we built it, rules and "specs" were even lighter than the iMOW spec they run now >IE: 3650 with 9:1 and 16" tires < with a light driver it wasn't neccessary to brace because the frame was not subject to extreme "twist and torque" from either driver or mowchine itself...
It seems to have held up well to the IMOW specs it was run at this year and Sami was a much more aggressive driver as well..
Next year she will move to my prepared class AP mowchine which has been reinforced..
If this unit were to be recommissioned as either IMOW for me or bumped to prepared class for anyone, it would be wise to add reinforcing rails and a trannny plate and Peerless and cart axle and ...and....and....
But as it is, it has earned her a wall full of trophys and never let her down...
-
how fast do you think sami could go if she topped it out?
-
A super stock mower is a 20 to 23 mph mower.
-
Sami's secret starting technique.....

that mowtor sounds awesome 8) holy :censored: thats a quick start!
-
Practice...practice...practice...
-
Sorry it's all black on black...
This angle shows the pivot point a little better..
are you using the stock gear steering on this?
-
First year we did, but steering was not responsive enough....and even though the gear is adjustable, there was too much "slop" in the mesh...
We changed it to direct steer (with same bell crank) for this season and mowchine was much tighter with 1/3 turn lock to lock....
-
Sami moving the seat back a couple inches...
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/th_DSC00003b.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/DSC00003b.jpg)
Seems her legs "stretched" a bit since we built this mowchine two seasons ago and it needs a little adjustment (which is good, because now it'll fit me and I may run it as IMOW from time to time)
After the Ooltewah TN race, this mowchine will be retired as Sami is moving up to the AP class and switching to the Rugg chassis...
Two full seasons, less than $500 invested:
Foote tranny, 3/4" axle, mechanical brakes.
First rebuild (clean and lube) of tranny done at end of 2nd season.
NO major breakdowns or repairs needed.
I would say this was an economical and successful experiment in getting my daughter involved in lawn mower racing and an excellent opportunity for us to develop a Father/Daughter relationship at this influential time in her life.
Man, I love lawn mower racing....
-
hey are the footes godd for imow? i thought they broke to easy? did you use the orig chain axel?
-
hey are the footes good for imow?...i thought they broke to easy?
They do Steve...for everybody else...
This was one of those "don't try this at home" things, but it workd for me....
did you use the orig chain axel?.
Yes, with modifications...and warnings and cavaets and "don't try this at home" but it worked for me. (with documentation and pictures)
Read the whole build... the axle mods and tranny cavaets are in there over and over..
Bottom line.... we understood the short comings, we were easy on the equipment and we were lucky...

How cool is that! There can't be anything better! Unless she enjoys Deer Hunting as well!!!
-
Actually she does...as long as it's not too cold...

seems like you and your daughter have a really good relationship. my step daughter is only 4 turning 5 on the 25th, and she wants to be in the garage with me all the time, wanting to use tools and so on. i can't wait until she gets big enough to be able to ride a mower by her self, and then that's when I'm going to get her going!!!! :woo: i have a mower just about like yours(sammi's) and it has just the F,N,R tranny in it, would i need to change it out with a Foote or 700? it has the same rearend as yours, but i severely bent a wheel trying to get it off. I wish that i could be able to go deer hunting again(wife won't let me go) i miss the taste of good ol' deer meat.
above all, don't ever loose the friendship that you and your daughter have, cause it may be hard to get back if you even could, you are a very lucky and a very rich man in my book.

Last race of the season and probably final for this mower... Southern Savanaha Mower Invitational..
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/th_SamiFlag.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/SamiFlag.jpg)

why the last race for the mower
?
-
Sami is moving up to adult prepared classs running my AP (the one in my avitar) with Dons "22 Special" motor.
With her weight advantage (compared to me) I predict she will do very well...
No I am not selling the Mowchine....

It was really cool to see the smile on her face after the WIN!!!!! The way she drives I know she is ready to move up!! She is a very patient and strategic driver!!!
-
For 08 are you going to run the foote in 3 gear. Or are you going to remove 3 gear I was going to put a foote in my Imow and was just wondering. Also what pulley size and sprocket sizes are you running to get the 8:1 gear ratio. Thanks
-
7" pulley engine, 6" pulley tranny, stock 8 tooth on tranny and 40 tooth on axle
Plan is to run the foote one more season, only change being to swap out the cast axle hub (per build pictures) with a one piece steel axle gear...
Foote held up well for Sami... will have to see how well it does with me on IMOW.. :omg:

Maybe time for the racing diet ehh?
-
I showed a few pics of my 13 yr. old "Daughter's" S/S or J/P project in my A/P build up thread...
She was hanging around asking questions about my build up and I asked her if she would be interested in building and racing one of her own...
She showed a "spark" of interest so I pulled a back up frame in and put her to work on it..
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/th_MowerBuildUp047.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/Squidd/MowerBuildUp047.jpg)
Bolting and torching, she pretty much "stripped the Mowchine in prep for cleaning...

I also have a wizard indentical to sami's and MowRacing's that im building. Ill have to post some pics. It will be raced at local races wich are not sanctioned. Even though the races arent sanctioned all our mowers are safe. Mine has a 1" axle, peerless 500, hydrulic brakes, and a 16hp opposed twin.

After 5 years of traveling the country with me, Sami is moving on....
I just dropped her off at a shoebox size dorm room at a collage on the other side of the state...
Gonna miss my racing buddy...
Course she is the last one out of the nest... :woo:  8)

-
Just Curious how the 3 Speed Tranny Did i have a mg ward that looks exactly like sami's mower
-
We ran it 3 very busy and successful seasons (including the first All American) on the same Foote 3 speed tranny...
Just cleaned and changed oil each spring...
New owner ran it the 4th year, not sure how it's been after that..
-
good job
-
Sorry it's all black on black...
This angle shows the pivot point a little better..
What size rod and rod ends and?
-
Slight adjustment to plans here...
Lot of guys asked about the "adaptor" on the stage 1 motor...which was an aluminum velocity stack for a
modified carb...
This is more of a show than go trick, but the extra air can't hurt...
Took a 2 1/2" PVC Pipe cap...
Flattened the end to get a good seal...marked and drilled for bolt holes... opened up the carb inlet hole...then tapered and smoothed the inside for flow...
A little gasket sealer to seal it up and sand the outside to "rough it up" so the filter sticks..a $1 part and ten minutes with the Dremel and instant Air Filter Adaptor...
. Sorry i know its a old post but did this actually worked?
-
Old school low buck trick, but yes woks just fine...
-
Thanks ima have to try it out
-
Sami put the chassis together and bolted on the fenders, tires and wheels...
I did the set up on the axel, chain and brakes...
Little tight in there, but all fits and rolls smooth..
what did you use for the chain tensioner?
