Briggs OHV & Vanguard / model 28 vangaurd oil issue
« on: May 22, 2011, 10:00:25 pm »
have a model 28 vangaurd it runs great with no smoke and great compression, but once it gets warmed up it starts misting oil out from the bottom side of the breather vent. I have tried 2 different breathers and a new gasket and a used gasket with the same result. If this helps anyone out when i got it it would run great till warm then blow oil everywhere out of the breather, well it doesnt do that anymore due to the fact i think the oil level was to high. any suggestions? bothe surfaces on the breather and the block look good with no cracks or pits between surfaces

Tecumseh Engines / 4.5 hp tecumseh
« on: April 03, 2011, 09:42:04 pm »
Ok engine runs great, but when cold starting you have to prime it, it will start run for a few seconds then die. Prime it again and same thing. It runs great after repeating these steps about 5 times or so. Have gone through the carb 3 times and have never seen a cleaner one since i have been working on these things. What am i missing here? The owner says it has done this since the day purchased and is finally frustrated and wants it fixed. I dont want to have to tell the guy i cant fix it but i have never had one so temperamental before. Has anyone dealt with this before? and if so what has fixed it? please help.
Model number is LEV 100- 345001D

Other Interesting Builds / 12 volt generator
« on: March 08, 2011, 12:31:28 am »
I would like to share something that i built this winter with everyone here. Build is complete already but I have a few pics. As i was spending the weekend ice fishing, like I do every weekend in the winter. I had noticed that our battery was dying and did not want to head home to charge itso we could keep fishing. (My 110 Generator will not run a battery charger without burning it up) I decided to build a 12 volt generator to charge batteries and have the ability to pull lots of power at one time if needed. figured it was worth a shot. So the next week I started the project. it started out with a 3.5 hp Briggs and a NIB 100 amp GM alternator. Happened to have everything i needed at home and did not have to spend a penny.
This was the first prototype. after wiring it up I got about 6 hours of use out of it until the bolt holes started to wallow out and things got loose. Now that old push mower frame that i have had laying around is gonna be handy.

There it is. Nothin fancy but it works. I can charge a dead car battery in very short amount of time. 14.2 volts of constant power. Thanks for looking. Any questions feel free to ask.

Chassis / tether troubles
« on: October 20, 2010, 10:07:30 pm »
I installed a factory polaris tether kill switch today on the sled and it would only work if i pushed in on the cap. when i would let off the cap the sled would die. now to fix this i simply took a very small bb out of an old ball bearing and put it inside the rubber nipple that goes over the button in the middle. replaced the little rubber nipple and put the cap on and it all works well now. does anyone know why i would have to extend the contact on this, shouldnt it work without alterations?

Chassis / Chassi question
« on: May 03, 2009, 08:08:35 pm »
OK guys this one should be able to be answered pretty quickly. I finally got a little time to start working on the project again.(still no money for it yet) but anyways I was wondering about the front axle. When it comes time to install. I will slide the axle up the front end till I find my ride height I like. But what do I do about this

Do I cut off what sticks out below the axle Or how has this been done before? This is a mid 90,s MTD ranch King I could not tell very well from either of Georges builds. It looked like it was removed but was never explained. Any help?
Thanks

Other Engines / Jiang-dong
« on: April 24, 2009, 12:11:53 am »
Was reading the rules for a local Karting track today. And came across what they called a "Jiang-dong" 6.5hp 195cc engine. Has anybody ever heard of these or used these? and if so what did you think of it and what does it have to offer in stock form or for factory internals?

Briggs Flathead / replacing starter clutch with a bolt?
« on: April 22, 2009, 09:53:15 pm »
Have got my 28ci briggs finished and running. only one problem. The starter clutch is shot and the motor  also has electric start. I dont plan on using the pull start for i might rip my arm off. Just wondering what i can replace this with. It has a screw in bolt type deal that the clutch screws onto and screws in to the crank. Can i just replace this with a bolt. And if so does anyone know the size of the bolts and the thread pattern? from what i have gathered it is a 9/16 bolt with a fine thread pattern. Will this work. Please someone help. only thing left to finish and then it goes on the shelf till its ready to use. Thanks-Tony

Briggs Flathead / 28ci flatty
« on: April 18, 2009, 06:42:47 pm »
OK guys. getting ready to clean it up a little now. wanting my block to have somewhat of a polished look. Or at least looking new again. have searched and have not found much info on this. The block is full of surface oxidization and what not. I have been going after it with a fine wire wheel on the drill. Is their some kind of chemical that i can rub around on the surface of the block and in between the cooling fins to clean it up nicely? or what are the tricks some of you have used for this procedure. I would not usually do this but this one is really bad. Any ideas

Chassis / rear frame plate?
« on: March 31, 2009, 08:44:31 pm »
Dont know how i should use the rear frame plate. an MTD ranch king i am talking about the rear plate that the seat mounts to and closes in the end of the frame. if you know what i am talking about then great. so heres my issue- to mount it the original way i would have to take out the axle to get it off for maintenance and repairs. for it slides into 2 rails and bolts up on the inside of the frame. now can i just mount it to the outside of the frame in the same position, first of all would that be legal, and second of all will it still have the structural support from the outside as it does from the inside?
guess it does not slide in didnt remember right, just went out and looked

i cant get the crankcase to seperate. I know they can be tough sometimes but this one just aint coming off i have it loose with about a 1/4" gap all the way around and now it just wont come out anymore. is it because of the output shaft being rusty or why wont it come off? and ideas? I am going to rebuild this motor for fun and practice, the more motors i work on now the more i will know when i rebuild the one for my mowchine. the best teacher is youself and the best practice is on an old briggs flathead that you got for free. so please any help

Briggs Flathead / opposed twin question
« on: March 25, 2009, 08:58:13 pm »
i have an opposed twin model # 422707 now its an 18hp twin and its only 42ci ? now i know that the first 2 numbers mean 42 cubic inch, but all the reading i have done and info that i have found explains that the opposed twins were a 46ci motor from the 14hp to the 20hp. so what makes this one different? is it the cast iron bore? i am not sure and just cant figure it out. this motor is in my daily mower, has mowed a lot of lawn and still runs great but is going to need new rings someday so just want to get this figured out before that day comes.
