Driveline / Upside down tranny?

I got a couple mowers in the garage and since the dragsters put away and the snowblower is all fixed/good to go i thought I'd start on a mower.
I've gone through quite a few threads to see what/how you guys do it. I saw a couple that seemed to suggest they put the tranny in upside down. Is that right?
I see double pulleys mounted on a vertical shaft and it's obvious power runs from the engine, to the bottom pulley, then through the shaft to an upper pulley which then transfers power to the upside down tranny.

Am I seeing that right>? Will the tranny last, running upside down?

At work I got a call from the small engine shop, he said "those old mowers are being junked". I thought COOL! They are 3 gravely's, one has 1200 hours, 1000 on one and one has 800hr's on it.

Now the bad news..

To be "scrapped" they must be chopped up and pictures taken to ensure they are not salvageable and thrown in the metal dumpster! :mad: Travis said he's getting the metal chainsaw from road&ground department to cut them up. :bash: All three run fine, they ran them about 3-4 years (long story on why they weren't on the books and now must be scrapped)

Vertical shaft 25hp Kohler twins, run perfect...AAAHHH!!! He asked if I wanted to  come help or watch, I said no I don't have the heart to watch servicable stuff be destroyed. Won't even let me scrounge a carb or starter. DANG IT!!

If anybody wants though, I can post some pic's of before/during/after. I think it will be next week some time.

Just frigging senseless...anybody else have a similar story?? :mad:

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / 8hp and 13hp briggs question

My kid races a junior dragster and since everybody knows, I get all kinds of "old briggs" dropped off at my place. Well, I've got a 8hp flathead and a 13hp vanguard that run fine and I want to build a "pit rig" to tow the dragster to the lanes. Question is though, what is the rod journal diametre and rod length of either (or both) of these motors?
I'll be unhooking the govenor and want to run a billet ARC rod and probably put on a billet aluminum flywheel so I can spin it up to 5-6000 if need be. (a guy is busting my chops about his golfcart with a "race" blockzilla, I want to smoke him hehehe)

Anybody know or know where I can find spec's?
