Title: Gxv 390 flywheel
Post by: flyingw on February 22, 2014, 07:53:10 pm
After much research and hours scouring part numbers, I still can't find a definite answer whether the billet gx390 flywheel will fit the gxv 390 vertical. Anyone know for sure from experience before I buy 1? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I believe it is the same but call ARC to confirm. Very nice people to deal with.

They may not know what or if it will cross over to the GXV but they might. Thats the trouble with this stuff. IF they dont and you find out it does let us and ARC know so they can inform the next racer that comes along with the same question.

I certainly will. I've read a few old posts from here that are the opposite of each other. Lol. 1 says yes they will fit as well as the valve train and reciprocal assembly, and the other says the crank tapers are different. I believe their names were Chuck and Ferris?

Chuck would be a very viable and reliable source he builds awesom hondas and is a honda dealer. If he speaks on a subject he knows what he is talking about.

Micheal Paccione is currently running a gvx 390 in cp, if I get in touch with him I'll ask what he had to do to run the billet flywheeel.

The flywheel will fit. The problem is getting a starter that will work.  The solenoid shift starters for the gxv I think has the right gear, but they are hard to find. They came on the Honda 3000 series rear engine riders, 3009 and 3011 models. They stopped making them in the early 90's and I don't recall seeing that type of starter used on anything else. Probably still get one thru parts but would cost more than flywheel. Last one I had I sold to Ken Jones. keep an eye on ebay or craigslist, you might get lucky.

i bought a gx390 flywheel for a 2005 gxv390 3yrs ago and let me assure you, that did not fit my engine, the crank tapers are different. the gxvs have a larger taper than the gx so u cant even rebore hub. i ended up having a flywheel made.

Well now thats two totally different answers given here.. maybe there is a difference in taper between year models?

i did say that wrong..the gxv taper is smaller...cuz when you put flywheel on engine it hit the block before it gets tight on the taper. there maybe a diffrence in model years tapers i would get ur mic out and measure beginining of and end of taper and the width of taper and call arc. im just trying to save you what i went thru... i ended up buying two jr dragster 5hp flywheels off of ebay and robbing flywheel magnets to make new wheels. yes.... im that dumb cuz i also run a gxv620 in the bp class

Okay,  I have an answer now. I took a stock flywheel from a gx 340 generator and set it on my gxv. It fits fine. BUT, the ring gear is NOT the same. So I wud have to say that yes the arc big block flywheel will fit BUT u would have to mount your original ring gear to it in order to still have electric start. I don't know if that's possible but I'm sure arc could answer that question.

Got back to the flywheel thing again today and as I mentioned earlier the ring gears are NOT the same. I thought they may be the same inside diameter and I wud just be able to transfer one from the other but that is not possible because the diameters are different. weird. :dunno:
