Drag Mowers / mud drag setup?
« on: May 07, 2012, 09:45:09 pm »
hey guys and gals, me and a buddy are thinking about putting together a mower for mud drags for fun at a friends property.  he has about a 120ft strip that he sprays down and they drag jeeps and quads so we thought it would be cool to put together a mower for some friendly competition.  we have a late 90's craftsman mower with a 15.5horse "turbo cooled" brigs motor on it.  its not going to be for sanctioned competition but the safety factor is defiantly still there.  im just looking for any helpful input or suggestions on mainly the drivetrain and clutch system?  we are not planing on doing any motor work as of yet...  but that soon could change  :P  thanks for the help!

man you guys are pros!!!   :woo:  so many good ideas and advice, thanks so much!  ill try and get a pic up of the rotors and calipers i was "thinking" about using by this weekend to see what you guys think (work and newborn baby has been hectic!)  if you think its a no go then im sure i will be able to find something from a friend who has raced motocross for years.  ill try and put up some pics of the mower im workin with here soon too to help get a better idea. thanks again, ill post soon.

ya thanks ill def look into that, like i said it isnt anything all out just somethign for fun  so the cheaper the better lol  only put about 30 bucks in parts into it so far and its pretty quick!!  all i did was eliminate all the unnecessary junk and useless pulleys and kept the front one ,and replaced the rear frying pan size pulley off the tranny with a 2.5incher.  re located the idler pulley farther back and not to bad for about garage time with a buddy.  the only problem was i think we spent more money on beer!!  haha.  but as for the brakes, i was thinking of possibly using a disk brake setup off a mountain bike because i have a ton laying around from racing.  6 or 8inch rotors.  hydroulic and mechanical.  you think that would be strong enough? thanks for the  help!

Chassis / steering setup?
« on: August 16, 2011, 05:35:48 pm »
hey guys im fairly new to the mower racing so i have a few questions on the steering.  i know that most of you guys put a direct steer setup on the mowers to race because of the reliability and obvious safety, so my question is what is the best and simplest way to go about doing this?  i have an older craftsman with a 14horse kohler command that i have just changed the pulleys on and am going to compete in a few local private races in a modified class (simple work done, no motor work just pulleys and other minor changes.)  for some fun.  so i guess what my question is is is there any way to beef up the stock steering to make it work for me so it will be safe, or should i just go all out and build it the right way because even testing it in the driveway its too sloppy at high speeds and i dont trust it, and wont even drive it till i do something.  thanks guys, any little bit of info helps, i just wanna have something safe and reliable to have fun on and race my buddies.
