Other Engines / kawasaki fc400v
« on: June 26, 2012, 03:34:53 pm »
Ive got a fc400v overhead valve stock engine that will not run unless the choke is fully on. I have cleaned the carb and the jets. I ran wire thru all of the passage ways in the carb, used carb cleaner and compressed air. all new gaskets and new heat shield. new fuel pump, filter and hoses too.

Did notice spark plug hole is stripped so I cannot tighten the plug all of the way. I think this is the problem, but thought I would run it by you guys.

any ideas

As stated in my first post "- took valve cover off and everything seems to be moving as it should be."

Hyd lifters on this Kohler, no valve clearance check. correct?

Did not pull the bottom cover off at all and it has never been opened, still on the original mower frame.

talked with prev owner and they said it worked fine last year.

What should I look for with the valves? anything I can check without pulling the head?

Kohler Engines / CV 15 Will not start
« on: March 20, 2011, 01:40:29 am »
I am working on a stock cv 15. I cant get it to start.  Just seems to out of time, will pop out carb and exhaust.

This is what I have done so far.

- Pulled flywheel off and checked key- was fine
- checked for spark- great spark
- cleaned carb
- got rid of gas in tank and put fresh in.
- took valve cover off and everything seems to be moving as it should be.
- changed oil and filter, filled with 10w30.
- there is not a low oil level sensor on it.
- If I put a little gas in the carb still wont start, I will get a flame out the carb with popping noises out the carb and exhaust.

Any Ideas???

pulled the valves and found a small piece of carbon on the ex valve seat. Would this give me the problem? waiting for the head gasket to come in so i can try it.

Yes, I did check the valves. everything was intact and the valves seemed to open and close just fine. I pulled the head off and I was going to pull the valves off and inspect them closer, Figured I will relap them also since it will be apart.

anything else to check?

This is for a grass cutter mower.Engine is a CV491S 17.5 command. Will not start! Pops out the carb and thats it. -Great compression. -has nice spark. -flywheel key is fine. -fuel pump is working. -Fuel solinoid is working.

Put a little gas in the carb and tryed starting it up and poped and had flames in the carb.

Seems like a timing problem, but nothing is out of the ordanary.

Pulled the valve cover off and there was oil in there, is that normal?

Any sugestions???

Be sure to reset the valve clearance, I know you said you checked it. Ive seen this alot of times. Another thing you can try (along the same lines as the ground), Use a set of jumper cables and a good battery, put the neg on a good ground on the engine and put the pos right on the starter bolt(where the cable hooks to the starter). If that works you have a conection problem somewhere(bad ground, loose/broken wire).

Briggs Flathead / Replacement piston Question
« on: June 20, 2009, 12:26:35 pm »
I just got this piston in yesterday and it has a notch on the top, on one side. Notch is lined up with the piston pin, does it make a difference which way it goes? I've rebuilt many small engines and never had this on any of them.

Thanks

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / 17hp knocking
« on: November 30, 2008, 12:22:34 am »
I just got done mounting a 17 hp B & S on a grass cutter mower and fired it up. Runs great, but it is knocking. I did notice the crank shaft had play in it(back and fourth, not up and down). The play is more than normal.  If i were to replace the bushing on the mag side, would this stop the knocking??? model-313777 type-0163-E5 code- 020404ZD

Thanks for any help or sugestions!
