George,   Very cool, would be good hear that BP again!   and it won't leave here.

Thanks for the complements guys!  It is good to be buddys with a body man.  It was funny, Mike (he built a FX and will be with me in MN)  has painted 7 or 8 racing lawnmowers but never one for himself.  So he finaly had to now that he built USLMRA machine.

Thanks again

Lee Vine has a quote on his site about some guys from Tenn coming to the races in Mn.  That wouldn't be team Fat Boyz, would it?  If it is we will see you there!

Briggs Flathead / blowing oil out a lot
« on: July 25, 2006, 09:19:00 am »
$2500 is alot of money!  And I still need a spare tranny and a digatron!  It is hard to justify, but try and race anything else.  I'm taking the wife to Knoxville in 2 weeks to go and watch the sprint car races to show her what "expensive" racing is all about!!!!
And George's machine is worth every penny.  Everything is perfect----and adjustable.  Oh yea it sounds like a alcohol dragster too!

"""""I have just considered getting rid of the Briggs rod and piston and upgrading to the ARC stuff but the $$$$$ is a problem right now, thought it was cheap to race lawnmowers!  """""

That is what I did, went with the ARC rod, cool unit.  I hear you about the $$$$$  I thought it was cheep too-----$2500 later I have a competive racing lawnmower!!!!
But yea, that is weird, possibly a bad rod?  Because if you had atleast a quart of oil left the rod shouldn't of siezed.  But it sound like you are on the right track.
Oh yea, we will probably be at Austin,  figured the miles out and it only adds 150 miles to the trip.  So we will see you in Austin.

Kyle,
Not sure if you will find a true "clearance" for the rod to the crank.  Briggs uses a go-no go gauge.  There is a measurement for the journal, don't have it with me now, but I'll grab my book from the shop and can get it to you later.
My best guess is that you overtighted the rod bolts.  In a stock motor they will usually live if they are a little tight, but in a racer, no chance.  I will get you the spec for the rod too.  I think it is 20 inch lbs. but not sure.
Good Luck

Kyle,
I made my catch can just like others are saying.  But only I used exhaust pipe,  I wanted to weld it to my chassis so it didn't go anywhere.  Same thing as the PVC though.  2.5" or 3" pipe with flat metal ends welded on it.   One end with 2- 1/4" hose fittings and a hole with a 1" piece of pipe welded to it with a clamp on filter.  Anything will work as long as you have a drain, 2 inlets for your hoses from the block and a filter to vent the crank.
Did you use a new piston or the old one?   Even with new rings if you went to far with the hone and used the old piston you will have tons of blow by.  That has been my experience.  Also if you are useing the old piston the ring landings are probably shot and you are probably not getting a good seal even with new rings.  Remember that motor probably mowed someones yard a few thousand times at 3500 RPM and now you are asking it to turn 6000+ RPM.

I didn't get a chance to meet you at the race.  Where are you from?  We are from the Oakland- Carson area in south west Iowa.  If you are close I may be able to look at some stuff for you.  We are not going to the Austin race, we are planning on going to the Morris race and Austin is just to far out of our way.  $3.00 gas SUCKS!
I'm going to send you a Private Message with my e-mail that I check every day so you can contact me directly.

Kyle,
That sure made turn 3 REAL INTERESTING!!!!
I didn't get a chance to look at your mower.  But yea, the tying off of the breather lines made the seal blow out.  As for the puking oil.  I assume you are not running a breather and have 2 ports like in the pic posted.  Did you drill the drain back hole in the valve spring area?  If no, that is your problem.  The oil can't drain back fast enough from the valves through the stock tiny hole.  I think I drilled mine out to 3/16.
On that rod make sure your not over tighting it.  That may be why it siezed.
Hope this helps

Oh yea, she has some scuffs!!!!!!!   It's a racer!   Got bumped in Mendota and pushed into another mower.  And the one front tire self clearances the hood when I turn to far.
No big deal......I'm buddy's with the body man!!!!   And I will roll it someday.

Excellent advice as always!!!
2 Teeth makes a big difference?  I was worred that I'd have to make a big jump on the front.  I have a 12 and a 15 on order, but they are back ordered from Techumseh.  So it sounds if I take those I'll be O.K.  I think my sponser needs to pony up for a Digatron so I know how fast that motor is spinning.  Oh yea, I'm my sponser..........hope it rains so we have a good crop!
I'll let you know how I do.
Thanks again George

George or anyone elso who can help me,
We are going to race on a go cart track an I need help with my set up and gearing.  We will have limited time to prep for the race once we run practice because they are running carts the same night we race.
Hope you remember me George,

Was at Aroma park and Mendota to push my Mower!!!
Got it fixed with a new 700 and a HEAVY plate like you suggested.  I have run a couple of local races and things seem to be working now.

Anyway we will be racing on a 1/7 mile oval with slight banking.  Was wondering if you had any input on tire pressure and gearing.  I'm not sure what we are getting ourselves into.  This is a huge track and it will be fast.
Now I'm running 6 Psi in both fronts.  4-6 psi in the left rear and 7-12 psi in the right rear.  Depending on the track, I have found that on a rougher track the less psi is faster and smother.
My gears.  I am running 8" pully on front and 6" pully on trans.   I have a 4 speed 700 and I race in 4th (that is 1 to 1).  I curently have a 10 tooth on the trans and a 40 tooth on the axle.  Was thinking I needed a 20-25 on the trans, but I'm not sure.  I know that you run a 8 to a 4 on the pulleys but I hate to spin the tranny that fast, and I finally have that belt problem fixed so I don't want to switch pulleys.
Sorry for the length but I wanted to include as much info as possible.
Thanks in advance.

O.K. guys, I know I should do a search but I need some info fast.  Building a motor to go to aroma park and it needs to run tomorrow!
Here is what I need for a briggs 28 cid.
Torque for the ARC rod end cap bolts. 28 FT lbs
Clearance for the piston. .0035-.004
End gap on the rings.
The arrow on the OHV piston, goes to the mag side? YES
How much clearance on the crank for the ARC rod?
and I assume stock for the end play with the ARC synchro balance weights? YES
Thanks in advance
Paul
Just thought I'd put in the answers to the questions for future reference.
