Coffee Shop / Billet rods
« on: November 23, 2014, 07:37:57 pm »
How many laps does a arc rod last. I know it's kind of a loaded question and there are a lot variables.  My question is how many people change their rods out every year or after so many laps.

I know someone on here said they buy a new ec tranny every year because it was cheap insurance. Do you do that with rods. Seem like $125 for a new rod is cheap insurance.

Just trying to gauge when I should plan on getting a new one

Coffee Shop / Kart seat
« on: February 21, 2014, 08:59:15 pm »
I'm finally getting around to building a super mod and have most everything but the seat. I'm wondering what most people are comfortable in. I have been looking at the carpet covered fiberglass ones on ebay and the plastic sprint seats at APS. I also considered a tillett seat but they don't give them away.

Tecumseh Engines / Tecumseh piston
« on: July 17, 2013, 07:25:48 pm »
As I near the end of my kawi flat engine build. I am planning my next project. Is there an after market piston available for the single or are people just using the stock piston. I'm not apposed to boring and sleeving. At this time money is no object as this is just the planning and parts finding stage.

Chassis / Bolens SP frame plan
« on: December 20, 2012, 07:12:58 pm »
After thinking and changing my plan twice. I have come up with what I think will look and work the best. The Chassis on this bolens is pretty stiff to begin with so I will be adding some square tube in certain areas and some 16ga sheet metal to stiffen it up some more. The problem is how to add a frame to the back and still keep it looking like it belongs on it. My first plan was to use 1x2 tubing but I don't think that would look like original equipment.

My other thought was to use some frame rails from a Murray wide body to extend the frame out so I can attach the axle. Then use the back of the wrap around piece of the Murray frame to connect the frame to the bolens pan on the back. This would act as the chain guard and a mounting spot for the bumper.

This is how it looks from the factory

The mower came with a peerless 600 and how they mounted it was the weakest part of the whole mower.

This is what I'm planing

This is for a ARMA SP
Just to clarify I will be only using the murray frame rails for the back portion and then run 1" square tube the entire length of the frame like a normal build.

Coffee Shop / Flow bench
« on: November 26, 2012, 09:42:56 pm »
Anyone use a home made flow bench with any success. I'm thinking about making one. After searching on and off for the last 6 months I have finally found a good complete set of plans.

Other Engines / Flow
« on: November 20, 2012, 09:49:50 pm »
As I put my plan together for my Kawasaki flathead. I keep coming up with more questions and most of them revolve around flow. The Kawi already has a decent size intake valve (1.5") but would it benefit from a larger one. What dictates the size of the valve besides the space available.

I know velocity is very important in filling the cylinder but can't that be dictated by the size and shape of the intake tract and cam overlap and lift. Volumetric efficiency and HP are the ultimate goal but can you go to big with the valve?

Coffee Shop / Crank welding and grinding
« on: November 01, 2012, 01:11:10 pm »
Can anyone recommend a shop that can weld and grind journals on small engine cranks. I'm looking to have some work done on my kawi flathead crank. I have found some searching the internet but figured I'd hit here also. No one in my arae does this anymore.

And just to head of the obvious. LOL

1) yes, I know it will cost some money

2 )No, just finding another one will not work.

I'm just looking for more options than just briggs and looking for a basket to put all my eggs in!

Thanks

Coffee Shop / Aluminum exhaust pipe
« on: April 22, 2012, 12:12:19 pm »
Has anyone made an exhaust out of aluminum tube? I was wondering if there was a problem with fatigue cracking. I also would think that the mount would have to be slotted for movement as aluminum grows quite a bit.

Thanks

Chassis / Tether switch location
« on: April 02, 2012, 08:46:07 pm »
Is there any cons to placing the tether kill switch on the steering wheel.

We had an incident last year on a modxr where the governor blew up in the motor and jammed the throttle wide open. The mower stood right up and did a pirouette with the driver standing right next to it. Needles to say the tether never got pulled until he reached down and pulled it out.

In this case the return springs are of no use because the governor rod was holding the carb wide open.

I'm thinking that mounting the switch on the steering wheel with a shorter lanyard on the wrist will be a better option on the modxr

Driveline / Adjustble cassette
« on: March 04, 2012, 03:58:14 pm »
Can anyone supply me a picture of an adjustable cassette. The mounting side. Every pic I can come up with shows the front side. Also how do they mount are the holes for mounting threaded or though holes.

Thanks
