You can leave the chain in for now if you want, but I would suggest taking it out now while you have it all apart.  When the chain breaks it will wedge itself between the case and the sprocket/gears and destroy case halves

I go by the torque specs on the chart that i attached.  Use your model number to find what row to look in for the correct torque values

I think the only difference in the 3, 4, and 5 speed transmissions are the gear sets inside of them.  The 3 speed transmissions generally came in snowblowers.  That's why there were no 4th or 5th gear in them.  No need to run behind the snowblower haha.  Besides having different gear sets inside, everything should be interchangeable with the 4 and 5 speed transmissions.

Most people race the 4 or 5 speed transmissions in 3rd gear anyways.  This is the strongest gear set to race with because the gears that transfer the power to each other are the same size (25 tooth gears i think...).  When you take your trans apart to race prep it, see if any of the 3 gear sets are two 25 tooth gears.  If there are, you can just race in what ever gear that happens to be and change your sprocket sizes to adjust your final ratio to the size track you are running.

I ended up using the Way Back Machine.  Here is the link if anyone else needs it https://web.archive.org/web/20041025084804/http://www.odref.com/peerless/400-SERIES/400-401-A.PDF .  I also attached a copy of the PDF

Does anyone have a copy of the exploded view for the 400 series transmission with the part number list or know how to find one?  The odref links in all the other treads about this on here no longer work...  Even if someone knows what mower the 400 series came in, i can try to look it up that way.  I found the 350 series diagram, but need the 400 series.  Thanks in advance

Thanks for the info!

So same length rod as a 31, just a shorter stoke crank

I'm looking to get the powerbuilt model 21 w/o the balance system (as opposed to the Intek) and boring and sleeving to a 31 piston size if possible.

The cam must also be the same as in the 28 and 31 ohv?

Haven't been able to get my hands on one of these motors yet to really examine them. Have just been looking at illustrated parts sheets... but hopefully soon!!

Yes the cam is the same as the 28/31 ohv's.  I use the solid gear cams from the older engines in mine.  I have been running one for 3 years now with no problems (I had a few due to my own errors assembling it...)  Rocket Ron sells a kit to stroke it with a different stock crank in it.  Im up to 29.8 cubic inches with one of the kits he offers.  It is quick to say the least :)

What ended up being the fix?  Did you keep changing the main jet till it fixed the issue?  My friend is having the exact same problem with his new mower.  Idles great but dies once he touches the throttle, but once he can get the RPMs up, it takes off.

IMOW is also 40" max side wall to side wall

Extra throttle cable already cut to length.  That would be the worst way to have your day end early

I went to my first national race this year at Bowles Farm in MD.  The first night, in the FXT class, had a lot of bumping during the race (more than there should be).  The next day, the track officials made it VERY clear that NONE of that would be tolerated during the next night of racing.  The race that night turned out to be some of the best side by side racing with little to no contact.  That showed me that it is really up to the track officials to keep the racing clean.  In my opinion, it wont matter if there is a front bumper or not.

Chassis / Re: Widening fenders
« on: September 15, 2015, 08:13:04 pm »
I thought i read in there somewhere that they cant stick out past the widest part of the tire...

Found it under the FXT rules but im not sure if it applies to all the other classes.  It would make sense if it did to avoid slashing other peoples tires if you rub up against them...

12.BODY: Body can be home made but must resemble a lawn tractor. No sharp edges. Rear fenders must not be
wider than the bulge or widest part of the rear tires.

Driveline / Re: pulley, gear question for new track with new mower
« on: August 15, 2015, 12:35:20 am »
Considering you already have a 40 on the rear, it might help you to go to a 4" or 4.5" pulley on the rear.  That way you are still over driving the transmission, and you will have more sprocket options in the future in case you need to go up more on the transmission for an even bigger track.  Its always good to have options and not be maxed out on sprocket sizes when running on your usual "home" track incase you need to adjust for a new track

USLMRA rule book says chain guard material must be at least 1/8" think.  So the part that covers you chain has to at least be 1/8".  I dont think the rest of the cover matters on thickness...
