Title: New Holland Racer Build
Post by: NH Mowster on January 16, 2013, 10:13:01 pm
Well I've been debating on whether or not to start a build post but decided to go a head and do it. Not many people have built New Hollands into racing mowers but I have seen a few Holland pullers. I have raced this mower last year but have it down to bare frame now for chassis strengthening and other mods. I will try to post as many pictures as I can and will try to have this project wrapped up by March. Stay tuned for more...

The wide body has the squared C channel type chassis. Its just a stock mower.

Sorry i haven't posted in a while. Got my super stock done and inquired a pressure lube oppy and a 40 ci INTEC VTWIN. really contemplating on putting the Vtwin in the super stock and making a super mod FXT  >:D i came up with a new steering design and i will post pics as soon as it warms up enough to play in the shop

Got some steering parts done today. Heres a picture of how it looks. As the rod from the steering shaft goes forward (steering wheel turning right) and moves the lever under the exhaust forward, the lever on the outside of the frame goes back. Then as the outside lever goes back it pulls the shaft back thats connected to the axle hub. The action of you turning the steering wheel to the right which will cause the hub to turn right. Have i confused you yet? LOL I have a video of it to but i cant post it on here on how it works. More to come soon, building the front axle this week and just got the engine wraped up.

Well got a few things done today. Got the hiem joints in and got the front axle tacked together and a spindle on. Looks pretty good. I would post a picture but for some reason my phone wont let me  when i select a picture it reloads as a new untyped post and theres no attachments? Once the girlfriend gets off the computer i will post a picture. Not bad for my first time fabbing a front axle. Going to take it to work in the morning and use our Lincoln welder to finish welding it, feel safer that way lol hopefully i will have a rolling chassis this weekend

Worked on the front some more. Got the steering lined out and got the front axle mounted. Pretty nice day out today so i also got the garage cleaned up and organized. Had it as rolling chassis today and realized the rear axle is sitting way to high so going to work on that this coming week

Looking good!

I especially appreciate all the stuff on the floor, I don't feel so all alone, lol.  I feel sorry for anything even partially magnetized when I build a chassis.

LOL Thanks. Hate to disappoint but after 4 hours of cleaning on sunday the floor is spotless hahaha i did get some work done on the back but dont have any pics of it yet. Ill finish up tomorrow and ill get some pics of the rear axle and hopefully of it sitting on its tires

http://s1307.beta.photobucket.com/user/Mowster1982/library/ ok for some reason my phone wants to take to big of pictures even on its smallest setting even though i haven't had a problem before??? Oh well, thank goodness for photobucket lol The mower now sits as a rolling chassis, for now, till i can get the rest of the engine together. Still have a ton of work to do and getting it ready for paint. Will post more soon

Got a little done tonight. Got the clutch T made and the cross member that holds it in place. Its not welded in yet so ill make the final measurements tomorrow and get it installed. Got to cold so i called it a night. Will get more done tomorrow. Oh yeah got my new front tires mounted and ready to go!
I dont get it? Sometimes it will let me post a pic and other times i have to post it to photobucket? Oh well ENJOY

Well i didnt get as much as i wanted to get done this weekend but i did get the clutch on and working and the front tires mounted.Ii also ran into a problem, from outside to outside im running pretty much dead on 40'' wide. I cant remember what the width for ModX is suppose to be but the rear axle is 38" sidewall to sidewall so it looks like i will have to cut 2" out of the center of the front axle to get it back down to 38". Not a big deal but still a set back. Will try to get that cut and bolted back up this week and do some final weld touch ups on some chassis bracing and other areas. I also need to finish up the steering and get the brakes mocked up and see how that will work. More pics to come..
the new twist clutch

Mowster,

You will ant to invest in a steel or billet alum pulley for the rear.  I have used those in the past and it sheared in half.  Not fun when your race day ends sooner than you want it to.

yeah i have a steel one for the trans i just didnt have it handy when i was doing a mock up of the clutch. that pulley is 1'' to small but my steel one i forgot at work on friday and really wanted to get the clutch done this weekend. thanks for the look out!

I had to cut 3'' out of the front axle because it was too long. Got that tacked back together and im going to take it to work and weld it with out 440 mig welder. I also got the disk brake bracket mocked up. Debating on either to weld the bracket on or just bolt it? Might just bolt it so if i have to move it or just want it out of the way i can just unbolt it. Will get that finished tomorrow and will put the front axle back on. By the way, dont mind the mess on the bench  ;)

Good Morning Heymowers! Been busting my rear all week on the mower. Haven't really took any pics yet but ill try to post some tonight. So far i got the front axle welded and put back on, the steering shaft and supports on, the steering linkages on, went a head and bolted the brake support on instead of welding it. The clutch is finished and i have a new belt ready to go. Going today to look for a clutch handle and cable and going to pick up the rest of the parts to finish the engine. Goung to be working on the exhaust this weekend

Good evening. Haven't got much done since Saturday. Had a nice snow storm roll through, much like other states, so ive been a home body. I did spend a couple of hours out in the shop today and got the puke tank installed and finished bracing the transmission plate and welded up some supports for the chassis. I didnt snap very many pictures because my phone stayed in the house because for some reason im very popular today and it wouldn't stop going off. Hope to get more work and pictures tomorrow

Ok i got a couple of things done before it got to cold. I got the transmission built and installed. I got the shifter in place and the gas tank where i think i want it... I make a throttle cable bracket design that clamps on to the intake that im going to take to work and build. I think im going to put the battery in front of the engine because that's the only spot i have left to put anything lol i have a 3 day weekend coming up so im going to try to get the exhaust done.

You're getting there!

Did you ask anybody about lowering the engine first?  Unfortunately that's not USLMRA legal.
Title: Re: New Holland Racer Build
Post by: NH Mowster on March 27, 2013, 10:34:20 pm
Yeah i know its not legal but its legal to run here locally. Im not going to run this at national events just our local track and tracks near by. Next year i will be rolling out a VTwin powered FXT that will be fully legal  :) i have to run the engine down into the frame because the way this chassis is i could never get a 700 in there. Last year i had the trans between my legs and the chain came off.

HAPPY EASTER! Got a little done this weekend. Been working on the exhaust and finally got it tacked up the way i want. I took the picture in HiDef so i had to upload it to photobucket. http://s1307.photobucket.com/user/Mowster1982/media/CAM00076_zps057de455.jpg.html probably wont be able to make it to the shop today because of the holiday but i will try to fire the engine up this week and post a video.

Well we got Easter done early so i went out to play in the shop. I got the clutch cable mocked up and working. Just need to finalize it. Got all the tires on it and it sitting on the ground. Hopefully going to hear it run soon.
Dont mind the crappy welding. Junk flux core

Got a few things done. Exhaust is finished but still need to grind the welds and wrap it with exhaust wrap. Dont have a billet flywheel yet so i put the cast one on for now. Im not going to rev the engine but just run it faster then idle to get it broke in till i can get a flywheel and get it to the track. Here's a picture of how it stands right now. Going to get new plugs and wire up the battery tomorrow and hopefully get some noise coming out the exhaust  :woo:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWQPMNumFoE&feature=youtube_gdata_player here is a small video of it running in the garage. Its not the best audio so i apologize. I will get a better video soon. I had some carb issues that i finally got under control. I will be ordering a billet flywheel at the end of this week. I will also be tearing it all apart and getting it ready for paint. More pics will be coming soon

Got a little done. Got the rear fender painted and got some barbwire between the green and white. Goung to get some yellow pinstripe to outline the orange flame. I got the front axle and rear axle on. Still have a lot of work to do...

Got the engine, battery and puke tank ( by the way in the picture I had the tank in the wrong position, the barbs are facing to the left now instead of facing toward the front) in place. we are battling heavy rain and major flooding here. So far our property is ok.... for now. Here's what everybody likes, PICTURES!
heres the engine, still missing a flywheel
and last the battery and starter wires

ok, 2 setbacks. 1: our first race is in 3 weeks and my funds are to low to buy a billet flywheel    and 2: when I had the chassis upside down I failed to realize which way the belt slack was on so the clutch was put on the wrong side    the clutch is no problem to fix. I have a murray brake pedal assembly that im going to use for the clutch that im modifying to fit the chassis instead of using a lever on the steering wheel that I had previously planned. since I cant come up with a flywheel yet im going to drop in a stock engine, governed and run GP and hopefully have a flywheel by june. not really happy with that idea but at least I can make the first race. we are still battling heavy flooding and having levee after levee failures so its pretty crazy around here. here's a pic of where im at so far with the clutch pedal fabrication. I will be using a stock pressure lube oppy for GP (our rules let us run oppys in this class as oppys make up 90% of the power plants in our area and are a dime a dozen) and I will be installing it this weekend.

If your running for points in the class your running a modded oppy just run the stock oppy in that class

I would but i run CP and its a ungoverned class and i cant run a governed engine in that class. Im not sure i can gear it low enough to keep up with everyone in CP even if they did let me run a stock engine?
Title: Re: New Holland Racer Build
Post by: saltyAMF on April 28, 2013, 09:58:52 pm
if your talking about maine in 3 weeks, youd get devastated with a stock oppy in cp class
i see your in IN.  disregard last statement haha

In the CP class, engine  mods are allowed, but not mandatory.  The only mandatory rule is a billet flywheel for ungoverned engines.  In the scheme of things, points for "also ran" (i.e. 6th - ?) is better than no points for not registering and fininshing a race.

yep! I will do the best i can with the stock oppy till i cant get a billet wheel for my race engine.

Well i got the spare engine in and the exhaust and clutch on. Looks like ill have to run in 5th gear to keep up with the rest of the mowers. Brakes and electricals are next. Hopefully will get it moving on its own power soon.

Now, I could be wrong, but judging by the "dirt" on the left front, I think you may have a bit too much negative camber there. You will want more than half the tire on the ground.

HI! sorry its been a little bit. My relationship status has changed so I've been going through a tough patch but I did get the racing mower finished! I raced it last Sunday, made 3 laps in practice and the sprocket hub on the trans split in half causing the chain to fall off and it got wrapped around the output shaft. Bent the shaft and took me out for the rest of the day  :mad2: :bash: but the good news is I took the shaft to work and we repaired the shaft and I built a stronger hub/sprocket. Took it for a spin yesterday in a field and ran it pretty hard. Harder then I would at the track and it did flawless. I will try to put some pictures up soon. I will be in the process of moving so bare with me for a little bit. Thanks for tuning in!

Hey guys! Just getting settled into my place. Ordered a billet flywheel and should be in this week. Going to be swapping out engines and will be finally running my built engine. We have a race one week from today so it will be a busy week. Things are looking up and starting to get life back in control. Will post pics and hopefully videos soon
