Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Intek Block Failure.
« on: September 22, 2015, 07:11:14 pm »
I had a catastrophic block failure over the weekend. Was leading the race when the engine grenaded (or so I thought). This is a 49 block with Arias flat top forged pistons. This engine has ran for 3 years with synthetic oil change every other race. I for the life of me don't know what caused the failure. Luckily the only damage was the block and sump. All bolts were still tight in heads and sump. This engine routinely sees 7000 rpm. Big 2 barrel carb, custom Isky cam and..... STOCK 49 rods. All survived. pictures included. Anyone with some ideas?

Coffee Shop / Questionable "internal" engine modifications.
« on: June 01, 2015, 12:02:10 pm »
Just for thought. What is considered internal or external? One could argue that behind the shroud is internal. It is inside the outer casing of the engine as delivered. I'm asking because we might have a potential problem within our club on this subject. I don't want to get into specifics but mods done under the covers and shrouds....internal? Also any alteration to a shroud considered external modifications? Removing a shroud considered external modification?

Honda and Clone Engines / 420 vertical
« on: November 14, 2014, 09:36:57 am »
Has anyone ever converted a clone 420 to a vertical? I know they make a 390 in the vertical position was just wondering if it's possible and what's involved? I've never dealt with a clone or Honda but this engine would now be legal in Mod-X due to the GXV390, correct?

Coffee Shop / ARMA MXR-JR
« on: September 20, 2014, 11:33:54 am »
I understand there was a test for this class this year. Our club NNYLMR had a record year for juniors with on average 7-8 drivers and more in the wings. We have several who have multi year experience but will still be too young for other classes (under 16). I honestly don't think they are quite ready for Mod XR but what we are looking at is a JR/SS class and not the ARMA ss but the same chassis as a ModXR with a stock flathead governed at 3650 and open gear. Would be a bit slower than a ModXR yet a good piece faster than Juniors. We are also looking to move our SS class to a prepared chassis class by offering this configuration to run evenly against our existing SS chassis. The JR/SS would be ARMA prepared chassis only and our NNYLMR SS ineligible for new JR/SS. Any thoughts from the powers that be within ARMA or otherwise?

Coffee Shop / Tillotson HR Questions
« on: July 29, 2014, 09:15:02 am »
Well I remember from my youth having snowmobiles with these carbs on them. Not the best carb but easy to tune and repair. I'm running one now on my OHV single and I have a few questions. 1. Why are all the carbs I see used on mowers mounted upside down compared to snowmobiles? 2. The carb I have has an external pulse (3 plate). I've been told to lose the pump and feed it with an external pulse pump. any truth? (using intake pulse - know how to do that correctly) 3. I have rebuilt the carb and it seems to work ok usually. It doesn't tune like it did when we would tune 2 strokes with them. I guess I need a lesson on tuning these things. I'll take all the help I can get.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Intek Ignition Diode
« on: July 03, 2014, 01:11:21 pm »
I have an Intek that we have lost the original coil kill wire for. I'm going to run down to Radio Shack and grab some but I don't know exactly what I'm looking for. Some one know what I need?

Can someone give me a known model number of a Kool Bore Briggs 28 cube? I want it to look up certain part numbers. I have a couple blocks here but they were stripped when I got them. Thanks.

Coffee Shop / Push-Pull Steering?
« on: October 15, 2013, 11:30:07 pm »
A friend of mine just came back from the ARMA Nationals and was trying to describe to me this push pull steering some were using. Anyone have any info or pictures of this? What is ARMA and USLMRA opinion of this?

Long subject title but pretty much says it all, I'm looking for a race in the New England/New York area Sept. 14/15 and/or 21/22. ARMA or outlaw doesn't matter just would like to get away and race where I'm not involved with race in any official capacity. likely will be bringing 6 mowers.

Coffee Shop / Sputtering Carb
« on: August 05, 2013, 11:38:14 am »
Ok I'm at whits end here. I have a walbro 56 that is minimally opened. I have fought a bad bad stumble off the corners all season. This weekend we went to a cart track and the thing never missed a beat. Perfect all night. We don't race on smooth tracks. the next day at our race it was terrible again off the corner. I have done all the mods. it is externally vented. I even did a sorta dangerous drill (chance of ruining the carb). I drilled a new vent hole in the bottom of the carb body really close to the bowl in order to get the overflow below the throat of the carb (drilled at a slight angle to drill into the overflow groove at the mounting flange at its lowest point hoping to keep the fuel level below the throat when bouncing). Still same trouble. This carb when on perfect flat surface works great. And yes the original hole for the overflow is plugged. It is the what I was told the better 56 with the removable plug to get to the low, low speed jet and installed adjustable high speed jet along with the proper seat and needle for a fuel pump.

PS this is the only 56 out there on our circuit that DOESN'T stumble on parade laps and will idle all day (although a bit rich).

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Intek Twin oil seal
« on: June 25, 2013, 02:52:31 pm »
We are having a terrible time getting the bottom seal of our Intek twin to seal. I've replaced it countless times and it won't seal. the pulley is at the bottom of the engine. The sump base bushing is tight. Just tired of it. Is there a better seal than the Briggs OEM one?

Other Engines / Unknown Kawasaki Cam
« on: June 16, 2013, 05:11:23 pm »
I have a problem - I bought a cam off that was advertised to be out of a FC540V. I had the person send it directly to Tim Isky to regrind. I just got around to install it and low and behold it is not for a 540. The actual cam gear is smaller as is the cam ends. The entire cam looks smaller and I have no idea what it is for. How can I at least figure out what it is?

Could I get a clarification on the rationale of the 8" rear wheel size max? Our club has never had a max wheel size and I want to try the 18x10.5-10 tire. It is the same height as the 18x9.50-8 we use now but wider and a lower profile hopefully with more bite and less bounce. Keep in mind we race on many grass tracks.
