Garden Tractor Pulling / Getting started-newbe here
« on: September 14, 2012, 08:22:38 pm »
I picked up an old wheel horse with the kohler engine all intact and running. It has the old k motor in it and would not take much to make a pulling tractor with. Have been looking for a place near me (Central Iowa) where IO could watch and join a club doing pulls.

Thanks to all who helped!
I am going to use the Wheelhorse as a pulling tractor, and got a Toro XL500 with a Kohler V-Twin 22 for racing. I had alot of good advice on the fundamentals of the frame and set-up on the old Wheelhorse!

Do have a question about rookies like me; I raced in hobby stock and in England SCCA so I am climbing onto a built lean mean mowing machine and I would have to start all over in the class where my twin Courage 22 has to race to get experience?

I took all the numbers off the tags and researched it to find in my suprise that the Toro had a command 200 with 44cc a bore of 3.3, stroke of 2.6, peak torque of 41, comp of 4:1 with the max power of 3600 right now with no modifications. The transmission is a mechanical CVT which is used on everything from small cars to racing formula cars. The principal is as much torque you apply to the CVT in turns it applys it to the wheels. You can even change the configuation to get more speed but you have to do it one gear at a time to find the right combination for what your racing. The big thing is to clean the CVT out and put in an special lub which is expensive to be able to add more horsepower to the axle by controling the slip in the CVT gears and belt/chain.

all this does sound intresting I feel that a good tach one any machine would be a great help especially when getting ready for inspections and keeping up on what is going on inside the motor.

I have two riding lawn mowers and want to transform one of them into a good racer. First one is a Toro LX500 with a Kohler courage 22 twin that has a mechanical CVT transmission, the other is a John Deere L100 Brigs and Stratton 17hp with a variable transmission. trying to do some research on which tractor would be a great build and I have some understanding that the Toro with the CVT would be best. I want to pull as much power as possible out of one to race.

Well then it is back to the ole field and find me another tractor for racing!! Thank you very much for being honest. I will keep the 1076 and restore it for I have everything to it, it runs great, and have lots of spare parts. ;) There are lots of cheap running mowers here that can be transformed into a killer track mower

Coffee Shop / help needed on a wheelhorse
« on: August 05, 2012, 06:43:51 pm »
I researched the wheelhorse I just bought intending to race it and found some intresting things. It is a 1966 wheelhorse 1076 and valued between $600.00 to $800.00 and will only increase in time if I restore it. Restored the value jumps up greatly so do I use it for racing, tractor pulling or restore it and look for another lawn tractor to race?

to get a manual you need the information off the breather which mine was a silver tag which had been rubbed away to just shiny paper

Thats a good idea, I was thinking of buying a front suspension I had seen and incorperate it into the frame. I believe it is time to get some good steel and make me a front end and attach new tie rods so I can put the wheel back on it. I still need to change the wheels over to racing wheels so the wheel hubs will work like that?
