I have a question concerning the engine wiring. I have an older Montgomery Ward 3 speed rider with a 10 hp engine. I did a search and found the post with the B & S alternator diagrams and it helped a bit, but I need clarification. I have stripped my mower of all the mowing parts, headlights and all the related switches, etc. Now I would like some Dummy proof help to tie all of the components together to complete the electrical system. Could someone walk me through this or provide a link to a diagram? I basically need to know how to hook the battery to the motor and all in between. Thanks a bunch.

For your basic "racing" mowchine...(no lights, no charging, Kill switch and push button starter) this is all you need...

Okay then. First the charging. Why or why would I not want to have the alternator connected? Oh and call me an idiot, but I have no idea what most of the drawings you sent are. Yes my village misses me. What can I use for a kill switch? I'd appreciate an IM if anyone can help me. my screen name is Signal50. Thanks.

First the charging. Why or why would I not want to have the alternator connected?
Most guys remove or at least disconnect the charging system, often running a lightened flywheel with no magnets (quicker) and then just trickel charge the batery between races...Alternators do produce "a little" drag on engine and are not needed...
I have no idea what most of the drawings you sent are
Dang...I didn't think I drew THAT bad...
What can I use for a kill switch?
Best is a "pull off" type teatherd kill switch so if/when you fall off, the motor dies and does not run off wild...Look on ATVs, Snowmobiles and Jet skis...
-
Okay. First, what are the green, blue and red wires hooked to. If I did want to hook up the alt, where do I attach is? Can you label your drawing?
-

Do you recognize the "battery"...? (+ and -) ???
Heavy (red) wire from battery+ goes to Solinoid (large terminal)
Then from other large terminal on Solinoid Heavy (red) wire to starter...
Smaller (blue) wire goes to "push button" starter switch and then to smaller terminal on Solinoid...
"Kill Swtich" runs from terminal on coil, to switch and then ground...(green)
Coil runs to Plug...(black)
-
This is coming along great. This forum needs a strictly tech how-to section. As for the charging wire, do I run it back directly to the positive terminal on the battery? Can I ground the motor in addition to grounding the battery to the frame?
-
Yes and yes...
Although it wouldn't hurt to put a "on/off" switch on alternator wire to be able to shut it down or disconnect when not running...
-
Hey this is great. I'm real glad you took the time to help out. I'd like to volunteer my time and services to help the forums along. I'm unemployed for the time being (thanks Fort Drum) so I have a lot of free time. Im co-located in Redwood, NY (most of the time) but I am in DeRuyter, NY quite often. I am currently weeding out my father-in-laws workshops and his extreme collection of small engine stuff spread out between 3 sheds and 2 garages. I would officially like to recommend a strong tech section for newcomers like myself. There is a lot of information out there that needs to be captured and put on display. This thread is a perfect example. If there is anything that I can help with, feel free to ask. Thanks again.

Welcome to the MowBetter board Upgrade302...
Hang around...check out some of the other threads and forums...(sometimes we actually do put out some "useful" information... )
Try the "Search" feature (button in header line) type in a particular issue, and you may find what you need...
If not Post a "specific" question and several of our knowledgeable members may be able to help...
-
In the mean time, I'm gonna move this down to the "Chassis" section...cause it does kinda apply...
-
your right this is the best forum any where i've been racin mowers for ten years but i didn't know much as i thought i've learned so much i check in every day and learn new stuff for example the guys i race just don't how i've gotten so fast and nothing breaks i've learned from more Goerge and Squidd in two months than i have in ten years it just don't get mowbetter than that
thanks

Glad I have been a help in your racing.!!!

Well I have the whole search thing down pretty good. I belong to a handful of forums like this one. One thing that I have noticed in all of them is the repetitive questions posed by new members. They are usually the basic "how can I go faster, cheaper". Understandably most people don't use the search option, but if you isolate and manage that basic info and make it reasonably obvious it cuts down on those questions and helps to spread knowledge. Visiting a library to do research involves a lot of searching but even they break it down by catagory. Thanks again guys. Maybe with Squids knowledge I will be able to get my mower to fire in the morning.

Hey squidd whats this ???

I pulled it off of my craftsman chassis during my the prep for my build...
I have an idea of whats it for..
thanks!!

Not squidd, but that is a starter relay. The power feed goes from the battery to the starter.
-
so the "juice" goes through this thing??
-
That's what that would be a starter solinoid or relay can be a useful part may want to hang on to it...
-
Yep go back to the drawing near the top of this post...
Heavy wire in from battery, heavy wire to starter and thinner wire from start switch...
-
IIIIIIIIIIIIIII see LOL...
thanks for such quick responces!!!
thats amazing!!
-
Wiring diagram worked great!!
a little hard to understand ur drawing But i got it!
-
Is this just for the basic wiring.
no lights and etc?

Okay thanks.
i wasn't sure.
Cause i have to do all the wiring myself.
and i wanted to make sure im doing it right.
-
go to uslmra.com they have a complete diagram on how to wire your tactor and it is very easy to understand click on files when ya get thereand then click on briggs wiring even if ya dont have a briggs
-
Ok hey squidd i need a complete wiring harness including the alternator can u make me one? it would help alot tHANKS i have a 2 cylinder briggs without lights
-
Haven't really found a use for an alternator on a racing mower...so no can't help you there...
-
I can do it for you
-

thank you that will help

i think that there are two wires coming off my alt. besides the lights so is the other wire a ground??
-
no its not a ground the motor is grounded to the frame
one wire (red) is for charging the other one (blue or white) is for lights
-
not squidd either ......i have a montgomery ward .......also i rewired it if you need pics email me @gl4494@aol.com.....but you do need that its the starter solenoid .....................when you turn the key it is like the switch for the "juice" their should be another little box that has two wires connected to it i think it is a transformer but i am not sure either  but all i know it mine is hooked up to charge ...........but thre is no kill switch but i know how to hook it up i will guide you through it
-
on my motor there are two wires coming out from underneath the flywheel. i believe one is red and the other black, they have a female plug on the end of them. do these need hooked up? Also the wire coming off of the push button back to the solenoid connects to the small male plug on the solenoid, right?? sorry about all the questions guys. thanks a lot.

NO

YES
-
Gotcha. Thank you, now i'm one step closer to firing this beast up...
-
You can hook the charing wires up if your running in IMOW, saves you trickle charging it between races.
-
You can take the flywheel off and take the alternator off can't you or do I still need to leave it on just don't hook up the charging wire?
-
okay this might be a stupid question but my kill switch has 2 "C" terminals and 2 "M" terminals. I only have to use 1 of each right? "M" goes to the magneto and the "C" goes to ground right?
Thanks!
Hoopty
-
The C on the kill switch means coil and the M means magneto. For a mower you need to run a wire from one M post to your coil/mangeto and the other M post to a ground. The C post are for a coil set ups that needs power unlike our mowers.
-
gotcha, THANKS!!

Thanks for the link mike. That's very helpful website you have there. ;)

im pretty sure thats a solinoide idk how to spell it but it takes the power that runs from the battery and and hooks up to the ignition so when u turn the key over it lets the power go to the starter. so if thats bad it wont let u give power to the starter ;)
-
Not the Solenoid, they are talking about the kill switch.
-
The red wire (charging), does that need to have a diode spliced in? If not can someone explain how the battery doesnt get drained while it is off.
Thanks Clayton
-
This is a diagram I drew up, maybe it will help someone. This is for a non points flathead with a tether and key switch. If something doesn't look correct on here, let me know. Thanks,

-
Yes it must have a diode or it will drain the battery.
-
Thanks George,
would that diode have to be in the purple wire going from the regulator to the battery then? Also, I think my grass cutter has that wire ran through the key switch so it opens when off, would that work also?
