Alot of talk about frame rails and wheelbases for the new FXS andFXT classes. Thought I would start a thread to keep everyone on the right path. I will start with the 2 I have and add as I collect info. Please add if you have others.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Vanguard sump gasket blowing
« on: August 06, 2012, 12:13:33 am »
Anyone got any secrets they are willing to give out for this problem. I have tried everything to keep these from sucking in or blowing out. I am about ready to weld the darn thing together. Dimpled the block and sump the last time and it held for 3 races. Gotta pull the engine and try something else.

USLMRA Races / Another rule question. Engine mounting
« on: January 30, 2012, 02:27:58 pm »
Can you change the height of the stock engine mounting plate? As in: the engine plate originally on the top of the frame and moving it to the bottom of the frame. Rules state "Crankshaft must be in original orientation and clearance hole in the frame.", but doesn't really say if you can move the location.

USLMRA Races / JP, IMOW and GP question
« on: January 28, 2012, 09:59:56 pm »
Got a question for the USLMRA tech people. The rules state engine to be stock and complete. Does that include the charging system under the flywheel? I have noticed alot of these engines racing in these classes not having them there.

Briggs Flathead / ARC weights
« on: January 22, 2012, 04:49:19 pm »
Got my ARC brass weights for a new SP build. Using the newer crank that needs to be machined for them to fit. Now my question is, do you machine the crank for an interference fit or not? If so how tight do I want it?

Chassis / Cheap front brakes
« on: November 30, 2011, 06:31:07 pm »
After seeing Ryan Kerr's front brake setup this summer I decided to try and come up with some for my FXT on the cheap. After some calculating and checking clearances this is what I came up with. Started out by having some custom rotors laser cut for me. 6" diameter, 1/8 thick and with a 2 1/2" bolt circle so it will match up to the front hub. Found some 6061 aluminum tubing that will go in the lathe to make the correct size.

Then found some calipers on ebay that will work. They are single piston, lt. and rt. with hoses and a hand master (that I did not use). Here is a link for them. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ATV-Front-Hydraulic-Brake-110cc-250cc-/160655998621?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item2567d7fe9d

After machining the spacers (sorry, forgot to take pictures) I used the front hub as a pattern to drill and tap the bolt circle for the hub and rotor. Then countersunk the extra holes in the hub to attach it to the spacer.

After test fitting everything I made a mount for the caliper and welded it to the spindles. Hooked everything up and bled the brakes. Running them into the same master as the rear brake with an adjustable proportioning valve.

Ended up with around $130 into them. Should be plenty of brake for this machine. I think I will still put them on the mill sometime and take some more material off of the spacers. They weigh around 2.5 lbs. with the hub and rotor.

Coffee Shop / New Trailer
« on: November 21, 2011, 02:34:30 pm »
Finally came across the right trailer at the right time. Picked up an enclosed trailer for us to travel in style now. 7.5 by 22 for a great price. Even has brand new tires on it. Now to outfit it for mower racing.

Now to find a truck or SUV to haul it. And even some more to think how small this world is, I told the couple I bought it from that my Daughter and I race mowers and they said They have a cousin up north that does that. Ended up being cousins fo our own Thawley.

Same trip brought home our new puppy "Tecumseh". Tec for short. He will be enjoying the racing with us next year hopefully.

Post your Pics! / Blowed up real good
« on: August 24, 2011, 07:01:59 am »
The BP finally showed a weak link. Popped the head off of a exhaust valve last weekend in the feature race. Was going for 1st place when it happened. About 3 seconds before I shut it down.

Time for the bigger engine.

Driveline / Good Axle Bearings
« on: December 20, 2010, 07:21:47 pm »
Who runs what for their rear axle bearings? I just started to tear my BP (Orange Deere) apart and found both rear axle bearings have seized at on time and spun on the axle. Pain to get out. Ruined the axle too. Just wonder when it happened and how much faster I would have been. I have checked them after every race and always seemed to be ok. I must of just missed it. I would feel something get tight every now and then, but I thought it it was the chain needing lube. Race and learn, huh?
