Title: Avatars
Post by: mowdak1 on December 28, 2006, 04:59:01 pm
Over the last few days I've run across several avatars on the forum that were being called from the full size image on Photobucket. The forum software was set to resize these images, so they look like any other avatar when loaded. Being a web designer however, I notice things that others may not notice, and I know what causes many problems when I see them on a web page. When I load a page and scroll all the way to the bottom of the page to find an avatar still loading, it's pretty much a dead giveaway that image's file size is huge!!

After finding the first, and determining it was 287 kb, which avatars are supposed to run down around 5 kb max, if you want the page to load efficiently, I've been checking a great many of them and cutting new avatars for you behind the scenes. I've also discovered several that the images were resized to proper dimensions but no file compression was used on the image, and those have been running in the 10 - 15 kb range. Likewise I have resized several of those.

If your avatar disappeared on you mysteriously it is likely because we changed settings in the back room to reject large file sizes on avatars, rather than simply resize their dimensions. If you need help with resizing your image, post it here and I'll cut you a new one in proper dimensions and file size.

Sorry about the trouble guys, but when we get several of these huge files on a page, it slows page load speed drastically for those on dial-up, and we want their experience here to be as enjoyable as everyone else's. Especially since two of our Admin members have to endure this as well!!

THANK YOU SIR....

Post by: mowdak1 on December 28, 2006, 07:55:00 pm
Yep!! Not a problem.

-------------------

In chatting with Chris about this in the backroom guys, it seems SMF won't waste your existing avatar if it is too large, so it won't disappear! If all of you would be so kind as too right click on your avatar, scroll down and select properties and check file size for us we would greatly appreciate it!! Should be below 7000 bytes, if it's not please report it here...

If I designed your avatar for you, you don't have to worry.

I have fixed several in the last few days, but given the numbers I haven't notified everyone, and honestly I don't remember them all...

Brian Singsime, Robert Sparbell, Kyle McGee, Money89tractors, 1031, SCF I got yours already! There were several more but I don't recall all of the names guys.

Rocky,
Mine is to big 12000.  I don't know how to change it.  If you can fix it, go ahead.  Or let me know what I need to do.
Thanks

You're fixed Paul! Since it's so purty I cranked up quality on it, brought you in just under 5 kb from the original 12.5. It lost a little definition down at the 2.5 kb range! Flames on the hood were a bit fuzzy.

Not a problem on yours Ronal it was only slightly over weight. You were in the low 9 kb range! As indicated above I've found several that were running full size images off of Photobucket and those were running 200 - 300 kb avatars. There we got issues, but we are finding quite a few in that 10 - 20 kb range, and that all adds up to with 20 of them on the page.

-------------------

Got your list in the back room Squidd. All but one of them, comments there on that one.

------------------

Tom it depends on what you're running for graphics software. Most cheaper software won't allow you to do it because it isn't sophisticated enough, but... I use file compression on the image to reduce the number of colors and pack the pixels in a little tighter. In Photoshop you select "Save for Web" to do this. Then reduce image quality by up to 65% in some cases. Most of these avatars if I tweak the colors and lighting they will actually come out looking a little better at that 65% reduction in image quality.

Many of those we're seeing problems with are larger images that need resizing as well. The software sees an image that exceeds the maximum defined dimensions, it simply defines the dimensions correctly in the code and that doesn't reduce file size, it only reduces the displayed dimensions of the image. Those I'm physically reducing to size, then compressing them. Just like racing, every time we trim few kb here or there we speed the forum up a little. Do it often enough and everything clicks along a little easier for those on dial-up.

Well I did this one as you requested, however when I got down to the text, I could not get "TheImportKiller.com" to come through in any font as legible. It was simply too small, so I backed up and regrouped as you have probably noticed by now, wherein the gradient, didn't look right, so I went solid black backdrop and then the red border I thought would just look really cool!

I was a wee bit concerned about the text so I decided to go ahead and downsize it while I had it loaded. Simply didn't work... 200+ fonts on here and nothing was legible dude. Could not for the life of me make all of that clear enough to read without struggling. Tried different colors, different styles, simply would not come out. I had trouble with this until I went to the black backgground and inside shadow, then it screamed off the page! The border was needed to finish it though! Looks waaaay cool on theImportKiller.com background! The border doesn't get consumed by the background like it does here!

Against forum policy dude, that sir, is a registered trademark, and without the express written consent of Briggs and Stratton, which they have this tiny little issue with formally recognizing lawn mower racers, I'm afraid we can't let you put it up. Sorry!

Welcome to Mowbetter! And, find me another picture to put up for you!

Hey Chris, I am having trouble getting a picture to load for my profile. Could you possibly get this one on there for me or resize it for me so I can?      Thanks Dave

A little too wide Dave, must be 90 x 90 max dimensions. Anything bigger either way and it'll spit it out! You were at 100 x 75 as noted beneath your picture... Fixed it!!

Sorry I never got back to you Dave, I've been neglecting this place lately :(

On a side note, everyone should really try to use PNG images, they're just as good - if not better image quality than JPG, and at about 1/10th of the size!

Actually image size varies a great deal in depth of color Chris. Some images weigh less as jpg, some weigh less as gif, some weigh less as png. I typically check all 3 when saving for web applications and it varies considerably dependent upon how many colors you have in the image. Easiest way to check it is of course in Photoshop, using Save for Web, with 4 up comparison. In example, my avatar weighs in at 3.27 K as a jpg file at 50% quality. If I save it as gif or png-8, at 168 colors, (again 50% quality in gif and png-8), it weighs in at 5.85 and 5.25 K respectively. And, I lose more resolution in the image.

I usually save what I can in 8-color PNG format, which weighs in under JPG almost every time. But es, as you stated it definitely depends on the content of the picture. Sice I drop it down to 8-color it weighs a bunch less, but doesn't look as good as most.

Make it smaller 90x90... right now its 160 x120

4300k is the size in "weight" of pic under 5 000 is good...

right click on pic go to bottom "properties" to see size and weight...

Then cut down, shrink in paint, photo shop, or what ever program you have

I have you down to 90x90 but still at 13k

I don't have the compression software to go further

2.75 kb out of Photoshop. And, that's at 50% quality, it still doesn't look bad at 30%, which got it down around 2 kb.

90 x 75 is he best you can do with it retaining dimensional perspective however.

If you want to post the original I can crop it to full 90 x 90 dimensions and clean it up a little better.
