Briggs Flathead / Re: 11 HP Flathead 25 CI or 14 HP OHV 28 CI

Ok I'm really new to the Lawn Mower engines and keep reading people saying to get rid of the counter weights and use the brass counter weights. The problem is I have no idea what they are talking about,is there somewhere I can get the info on how to do this?I work on cars and have a good supply of tools and if I don't have it I will get it I just need to know what to get.

Briggs Flathead / 11 HP Flathead 25 CI or 14 HP OHV 28 CI

The class I'm building for at a local track allows a stock motor and a 31 CI limit.I have an 11 HP Flathead and a 14 HP OHV and just wondering if anyone could give me any advise which motor would be the best to use.I have also read brief topics on mixing parts between the two as some parts are better in each motor.Just looking for the best of both worlds want what will make power and hold up

Kohler Engines / Single OHV Kohler ID
« on: February 04, 2014, 09:34:13 pm »
OK the other day after putting a local ad out for old riding mowers for a project I get a reply. So I go to check it out and the guy has 3 riders that he needs gone because the town is on his back.He wants all 3 gone so I load them on my poor Ranger Pickup and get them home and start looking to see if I have anything or just scrap. One is an old something with a Flat Head B&S the other is a Murry with a 14HP OHV and the last is an old Craftsman that someone painted black and it has from what I can find in pictures to be a Kohler OHV Command. The problem is ,is the blower housing was missing so I really have no way to know what it is.Is there any other way to find out what I have so I can figure out if it's worth building.I was told to take it apart and measure bore and stroke,is this the only way or is there maybe something stamped in the block?Sorry for the long story.

Newcomers / Hello from Saratoga NY area
« on: January 14, 2014, 09:21:06 pm »
I was on here before but I guess it wasn't the right time for me to start in the Lawn Mower racing business.Things seem better now and hope it's the right time now as I'm not getting any younger,I think the ageing has sped up for me.Anyway I'm looking forward to this and I'm sure many of you will see my name asking questions I will be looking for any info I can get can never have to much. Not sure of what class as I have to find a place to race and see what they are running and the rules so my first question would be,does anyone know of a track within 1 to 1 1/2 hours of Saratoga, with gas prices the closer the better.Next would be suggestions on the best places to buy parts new ones and any local places if any that might sell used.

Driveline / 600 shift pattern
« on: June 06, 2009, 08:19:01 am »
I have been running my 600 in what I thought was 2nd gear and then the oyher day I decided to shift to 3rd and it was like I down shifted.Have I been running in 3rd all along? The plate where the shifter come thru says rev and 1st then 2nd is across from 1st and 3rd is directly in line with 1st like the old 3 on the tree or H pattern.

Chassis / Another pulley question
« on: May 30, 2009, 07:01:33 pm »
I have looked thru a lot of the pulley questions and all I seem to find is what size to use and other misc things. This is the first year for my son and I racing lawn mowers and have raced one race and all went well.My question is can anyone tell me where I can find pulleys for a 1 inch crank bigger than 4 1/2 inches.Everyone is running a 5 and 4 pulley combination but the biggest I can find to fit my motor is 4 1/2.We are limited to 3800 RPM so I would like to get as close to the same ratio as everyone else, some of the guys are even running 5 1/2 on the motor but they have a smaller crank dia.

My son and I are from Hudson Falls. We are both going to run stock big block this year because of our late start but planning on super mod for next year.As soon as we have machines ready for this year we plan to start building for next year so any super mod drivers that could offer any info would be great. Also any advice for this year would be a big help as we are both new to this.We are really looking foward to racing this year.

Driveline / Help with transmission ID
« on: March 29, 2009, 08:07:55 pm »
I have tried to put pictures on here but no luck so I will try and give as much info as possible. The trans came out of a 1970 era John Deer rear engine mower with a Tecumseh motor the trans is a 2 speed and there are no tags or numbers on it.Any info would be great I just want to know if it is something worth using.I'm not done with this years project yet but still thinking of future projects and parts stockpiling. Thanks
