Title: Re: New build start up
Post by: speeddemon0308 on December 14, 2006, 09:14:06 pm

Title: Re: New build start up
Post by: grassthrasher on December 14, 2006, 10:20:54 pm
ya im building to SOLTRA rules in modified and it is an 18hp opposed and about the trany do u no if it is good trany for racing? and thenx for the posts
Title: Re: New build start up
Post by: 300xdeere on December 14, 2006, 10:25:46 pm
Foote is no good for racing. Sami uses that same tranny but with different set up ask squidd how it seems to go and how the mower is set up. Like hp, rpm's, gearing and such.
Title: Re: New build start up
Post by: offroadwhatever8 on December 15, 2006, 08:52:14 pm
and sami is also light.....
Title: Re: New build start up
Post by: Squidd on December 15, 2006, 11:12:53 pm
Tomorrow..when I get time in the shop...I'm gonna tear a 700 and a Foote apart in prep for backup for Sami's and my mowchine...

I'll post side by side pics for comparrison so you guys can see what your getting into...

Squidd,  Are you talking about the H-Shift tranny in Sami's build thread ?  The Wizard (old MTD) ?
I would love to see the inside of one of those.  We have some of those in mowers we bought to build, but we have not torn into any of them yet!  We generally use P-700's          Dave
Title: Re: New build start up
Post by: Squidd on December 16, 2006, 12:22:27 am
Yeah, I got a couple of each laying around, and I'm waiting on parts to proceed with the F/X so I thought I'd tear into these...

Side by side you'll see the differences and weak points, (of each) and be able to make an informed decision if it's "strong enough" or if you can trust those little keyed shafts...

They work just fine to a certain HP and RPM and Weight (torque) requirement...How much more will they take before you need to upgrade for your requirements...??

 I'll let you guys decide...

well, if i ever use my Foote, the most that will ever go into it is a governed 8 hp Briggs or a governed 10 hp Tecumseh. That is until i get a peerless 700.....

It looks like it's turning out to be a sick mower. Did you take it for a test drive? How did the foote tranny do?

Title: Re: New build start up
Post by: money89tractors on January 02, 2007, 07:58:16 pm
looks to be a drum brake.

mower looks good, i personally would like wider tires on the rear....

Post by: speeddemon0308 on January 02, 2007, 10:48:53 pm
nope no one in soltra has that i know of!!! either the brakes on the gearbox it self ,or a disck brake on axel!
Title: Re: New build start up
Post by: 300xdeere on January 03, 2007, 10:24:05 pm
No those breaks work great, heck they work better then my disk do so why not give them a try.
Title: Re: New build start up
Post by: TheMowinCuban on January 04, 2007, 12:20:27 pm
I'm still interested in that front end of yours, because that has to be the simplest front end i've seen, and i'm still puzzled as what you have as a spindle and how exactly you hold the tire on, so if you can, post some pics of the spindle assembly with the tire off for me, because i'm planning on fabbing up my own front end, and i might use your idea if it seems safe enough.
Title: Re: New build start up
Post by: 300xdeere on January 04, 2007, 09:31:43 pm
That front end works great let me see if I can fill you in on how its made. Start off with your 2" square tubbing cut it to what ever length you would like. Next cut two pieces of 2 1/2" square tubbing  1 1/4" wide. Cut one end of each piece off right at the bend. that gives you your two U pieces for the spindles. Drill a hole directly in the center for your big bolt what ever size u need for your rims. next weld the head of the bolts to the piece of 2 1/2 " square tubbing where the hole was drilled. then drill your other two holes both threw the spindle and your axle.

Title: Re: New build start up

Instead of welding the nut on, couldn't you use a lock-nut with washers and thrust bearings?
Title: Re: New build start up
Post by: grassthrasher on January 05, 2007, 11:39:44 am
u do that so the bolt dosint move alon and the drilled out nuts are for bushing the system works good with no play
Title: Re: New build start up
Post by: grassthrasher on January 05, 2007, 11:41:14 am
and u don't weld the nut to the bolt u weld it to the 2 and 1/2 tubing
Title: Re: New build start up
Post by: eddiehenjr on January 05, 2007, 11:46:00 am
Oh ok now I see what you're saying!  Would it still be a good idea to use thrust washers and bearings to make things move a little smoother up front?  Only problem I can see with that is dust and dirt getting in em and seizing things up.
Title: Re: New build start up
Post by: grassthrasher on January 05, 2007, 11:53:24 am
ya I u could.

but after u gres them up it is rely smooth and u rely don't need bearings if you drill out tho's nut good then it will be smooth

I will get rel pic after

ok i see it better now, thanks. I just have one question, the bolt that you use as a spindle, Do you put that peice of tubing right over the bolt?

Thanks again for the description, if i have to fab my own axle, i will use your idea for sure...

And just a side note, its spelled Axle not axel...
Title: Re: New build start up
Post by: 300xdeere on January 06, 2007, 02:34:05 pm
Um no piece of tubbing on the spindle, the bolt is the spindle. The bolt is only threaded towards the end.
