Ok fellas here's what I have to work with. It's a 12hp Craftsman originally had a 38" deck and believe it's a mid 90's model. I got it for next to nothing so it should be a good start. It starts right up and is smoke free, it already has a 4" front pully and a 5.5" rear pully new belt and a straight pipe. I opened it up in a parking lot and found the steering is loose and downright scary and don't think the brakes work:omg:

I've been researching the builds section and after seeing Tom Fox's Craftsman BP build I have found my starting point. I'm going to leave the motor alone and focus on the steering and drive line/Brake. I'll have to strip it down to a rolling chassis and farm out some of the custom work to the pros ;) Let me know what everyone thinks and have a Merry Christmas :D

Thanks arm5080 I will be sure to take you up on that offer  I'll contact you after the holidays and I would like to attend the build clinic you mentioned in late February. I picked up a small 12hp Craftsman today for next to nothing so I think it will be a good start and has some potential. When I get some picks of it up and acually find out what year it is :lol:think it's mid or late 80's i'll post it up in another thread and get everyones thoughts on it. Thanks again!

Thanks Rooster!

arm5080 I'm in Adams County just outside of Gettysburg, looking forward to hopefully finding something to start wrenching on this winter. It would be great to see some local setups. Great site :D

Thanks Guys!!!
I can pick this up locally dirt cheap... Would this be a good start? or somthing I should pass on...
1986 Yardman Garden tractor. Has an 18 hp Briggs and Stratton motor. Hydrostatic drive, high and low speed, with front and mid mount PTO. 3 point hitch in the rear. Comes with a 50" mower deck with 3 new spindles replaced last fall, front mount plow, wheel weights and a front mount PTO driven snow blower, all hard ware and manuals included.Very heavy duty. Get ready for snow this winter. It does need some minor adjustments on hydro. Price is OBO!

Hello Everyone,
Hope I'm posting in the right area... I was looking around for a Intrductions thread but counldn't find or didn't look hard enough  I'm looking to get involved here on the site and locally to me in central PA and hopefully pick up a ride with some potentional. Is there any tips you can share on what to look out for and what to stay away from when staring a new build??? I'm just looking to start off for fun in a stock class up to 20hp? I think that is what the rules said but will have to check. Any tips on what trans I should be looking for would be much appreciated, most newer models are hydrostatic which I belive I do not want. I'm kinda leaning toward older iron with a metal hood and fenders. Guess weight would be the trade off  Look forward to any and all suggestions!
Take Care All, and have a MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! John
