Briggs OHV & Vanguard / 28c.i. 14.5 hp B & S rebuild
« on: July 09, 2013, 10:46:52 pm »
Hello, just wanted to report that I rebuilt a 14.5 h.p. 28 cube OHV Briggs this past winter for use in a stock class belt drive pulling tractor following advise and recommendations from people on this site, and it has run great thus far. I'm proof that by following advise and reading and following directions, anyone can tear down and rebuild one of these engines. Thanks to all who offered suggestions and advise to those of us who make up the large army of unskilled and untrained gearhead wanna a bees, you give us hope and guidance!

Thanks again,
BDM

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Briggs 14.5 hp rocker arms
« on: February 02, 2013, 01:57:33 pm »
Are there any rocker arms available for use on the 28 ci Briggs that bolt right up without any mods that will give improved performance over the OEM rockers, like maybe a little increase in lift and/or duration? The motor is bone stock other than having the ports cleaned up a little, a number 3 timing advance key and an adjustable main jet on the carb. Thanks for your help.

Briggs Flathead / Offset flywheel key installation
« on: March 17, 2012, 10:04:15 pm »
Does anyone have a picture that shows a correctly installed offset flywheel key? I have put a #3 offset key in a 28 ci B&S flathead, but I'm not sure I did it correctly, it just doesn't look right to me, but I've never seen one before. The key came from e.c. distributing. Thanks for any help with this.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / 28 cubic inch OHV cam
« on: October 29, 2011, 12:36:39 am »
Is there a cam that will give better overall performance than a stock cam on 14.5 hp OHV B&S governed to 4000 rpms max?

Thanks,

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / 14.5 hp OHV Briggs and Stratton valve job
« on: September 06, 2011, 10:27:06 pm »
Are these the correct angles to cut and grind on the valves and seats of a 14.5 hp B&S OHV motor?
Intake valve - 30 degrees, seat - 31 degrees
Exhaust valve - 45 degrees, seat - 46 degrees

Also, if the motor will be governed to 4,000 rpm, is there any need for stiffer valve springs?

Thanks for any input.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Question about a 14.5 hp B & S motor
« on: February 25, 2011, 09:22:01 pm »
Does a multiple angle valve job as described in Don G's Motor Bldg 101 dvd and and a fly wheel key to advance timing improve performance in a 14.5 hp OHV B&S motor much like it does in the 12.5 hp B&S flat head motor? The OHV motor is completely stock.

If it does, which number fly wheel key should be used? Thanks for any information.

Garden Tractor Pulling / Flywheel timing keys
« on: February 13, 2011, 11:34:41 pm »
I pull in a garden stock class and use a 12.5 hp B&S vertical shaft flathead motor. The tractor is branded "Co-op", but it's a 1980's model Gilson-built machine. It's belt driven with a 4 forward speed with reverse transmission. I don't know the make of transmission, but it has a heavy cast iron housing. The gears are completely stock. The tires are 23 x 10.5 x 12 un-cut Carlisle Super Lugs. The motor is pure stock with the exception of having an 11 hp (25 c.i.) head and un-muffled header pipe. The two piece carb is un-modified as well.

I said all of that to preface some questions:
1) Could I expect the use of a fly wheel key to advance the timing to cause a noticeable difference in the motor's performance on the pulling track?
2) If I were going to use such a key, which one should it be? I've seen suggestions anywhere from a #3 to a #7 on various racing posts on this sight?
3) If I elect to use an advanced timing key, is installing it as simple as removing the flywheel, installing the key and re-installing the flywheel (assuming no other changes to the motor will be made)?
4)Is it possible to put the key in wrong?
5)Will the multiple anfgled valve grind described in Don G's Motor Building 101 dvd advisable in my case?

Thanks for reading this; I look forward to your responses.
