Briggs OHV & Vanguard / V Twin Engine Source
« on: August 26, 2006, 10:43:17 am »
Some of you may have already found this EBay store Mel-Co This guy lists return and waranty engines that sears wants to unload.  They are mostly v twin briggs engines ELS Inteks,  Regular Inteks and some vanguards.  The catch is that you don't know what is wrong with them until you get them.  Could be a carb that needs tweaking or bad rings or in some instances a thrown rod (rare from what I understand).  I just received a 44 cu inch Intek that I put on a test stand and started right up.  It had bad rings.  But for the $51  I spent it was worth it.  Most of us will replace rods and pistons and flywheels anyhow.  It is a good source for the basic engine on which to build a good motor.  Definitly worth looking at.  Just thought I'd pass it on to you guys.  Here is the address for these guys.         http://stores.ebay.com/Mel-co

Some of the Intek Twins Have ELS on them what is the difference between the ELS Intek and the 'Regular' Intek Twin And is there a preference in respect to availability of aftermarket parts?

Briggs Flathead / Briggs opposed Twin
« on: July 24, 2006, 11:13:36 pm »
Hi Guys hope everyone is well.
I need to pick everyones collective mind on this one.  I've noticed that opposed twins are quite plentiful and relativly inexpensive.  They have short comings such as rods and lubrication and I think they run alittle on the hot side also.  They don't rev real high and hold together due too the weak rod.  The aftermarket hasn't really picked up on them either.  I need ideas on how to build one that will hold up under race conditions.  I have talked to Rocky about this a few times and I know that he is entertaining the idea also. I have been leaning towards using the big time torque of these motors to offset the fact that don't rev real high. Any suggestions would be great no matter how out there they may be.... 200+ heads are better than 1 when it comes to thinking up ideas.  so that's why I am throwing it out there.    Thanks Guys

Briggs Flathead / Hi Guys I have a Carb Question
« on: June 16, 2006, 12:01:44 am »
Ok this is actually for my regular mower I cut grass with...  It's a 12.5 I/C  motor #289707  I picked up a carb off a 17 hp motor #311707.
Here comes the question... :?:   The carb is a basic walbro carb with an afterfire solenoid.  I know these carbs are jetted....so can I just put this on the 12.5 or should I get a rebuild kit with the proper jets or even a home brew adjustable needle. if it can run on the 12.5 just alittle rich I can live with it but if it's gonna spit fuel out the exhaust I will change it.  Just wanted your input.       Henry

Hi Guys I finally found my 700  it's a 708B  off an old Craftsman rear engine.  Are there any known issues with this 700.  Just curious.

Hey I also got an old mid engine 8 hp  Ruug it's ancient.  3sd  H pattern shift a little smaller than the 700.  What is this tranny and should I bother to save it?

Driveline / Locking an 'open transaxle'
« on: May 20, 2006, 12:25:52 am »
Hi Guys How is everyone?  Just finally registered here but have been reading posts since , I guess last Dec..  Anyway thanks for all the great tips.
What I wanted to address was the fact that I read a lot of questions about welding or locking the differential of a tranaxle.  I was wondering if anyone ever tried a 'homemade'  mini spool, kinda like the ones they use on the rears of some dirt track cars.  It would basically replace the side and spider gears but still use the cross pin.  You would still be able to disasemble the differential for inspection and cleaning and if you ,for what ever reason wanted to return the diff to it's original unlocked condition you could.  Just my observation I do tend to overengineer things but hey if it works :D .  Any input from you guys would be great.
