Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Briggs 17hp ybsxs.5012vp help
« on: August 13, 2016, 11:26:14 pm »
I have a 17hp ybsxs.5012vp motor I got from a friend for cheap.  Is it possible to get parts for this motor to make a decent racer out of it?  If so could you please point me in the right direction and possibly tell me where to start.  Thank you

If torqued properly yes, but only on a racing engine.

What is your definition of racing engine?  To me all engines can be racers till they grenade LOL!!!

Really no need for a key, but unless you have a degree wheel, it's a guess.  I made a pointer and Mark on my crank pulley so I can easily find tdc, then marked off (by 2° increments up to 32°btdc on the pulley). Have a Mark on the flywheel that lines up with a certain spot on the coil. Pretty easy to adjust once the homework is done. Of course this only works with this one engine/pulley combo. All that once the flywheel is lapped to the crank.

So what I got from your reply is that if I lap my flywheel to my crank then the key is really not needed?  Lapping them makes it enough to where they will no slip?

Kohler Engines / offset keyway?

Ok back to the stock motor.  Trying to advance the timing on the stock motor but trying to figure out how far to advance it and I know I'm limited by the keyway offset.  I remember talking to cromwell on the phone about it but I can't remember and I have lost his number.  Anyone have ideas?

20
That means as long as we not adding billet aluminum parts then I guess we are good lol!!!!

IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT BUILDING IT CONTACT "CROMWELL C4", THATS WHAT HE DOES!

Yep got a hold of him and we going from there. I ordered stuff!!!! lol!!  Thank you much!!

stock gasket isn't very thick. I think I would gain maybe an 1/8 of an inch.  What about port and polishing? Anyone done this on a cv490?

23
Not sure, I'll mic it when I head home on my lunch break today

Ok so I asked.  Our rules are all over the place.  They said when it comes down to it, you can do anything you want to the motor other than add aluminum parts.  So with that being said does know what I could run for a copper gasket in the head thickness wise?

25
I'll ask for sure tomorrow.

We were reading throughout the rules and there is nothing that states you can't up the compression ratio.  We can run other carbs, exhaust headers.

Kohler Engines / How much can I up the compression on a stock CV490s
« on: July 06, 2015, 05:19:36 pm »
I am running a governed stock class type mower.  I was thinking of getting rid of the stock head gasket and making a thinner copper gasket to maybe up the ratio a tad.  How thin of a gasket can I run for clearance reasons and how much compression will the stock connecting rod take before it go boom?

thank you in advance

Kohler Engines / Re: how does kohler adjust there HP?
« on: August 25, 2013, 09:10:25 pm »
I know Briggs does a lot of their hp by carbueration but how does Kohler set the horsepower on their stock motors? Is it with the carb or do they do something different? I have a 17 hp Kohler and want it to be 19, how do I do this basically

Thank you again guys

Or at least get it up another Hp to 18.... I'm not too greedy lol
