Hey Aintskeered,

No front bumpers.  And make sure your brakes are working good.
Tech is doing a good check out this year!

Now if someone could come up with a piece of plexy glass you could watch the motor turn!
 see picture from Squidd

Also it would be easy to check your oil too!

You know those billet rods are so purty that you want to see them but you have to close up the case.
what a shame.  :P

Slick,

Start off with a Carb job and Cam and valve work from Don!

Then crank work followed by seat of the pants feel flywheel and starter from Don.

If you can afford go flywheel/ starter first.

I think this is what you wanted to know.

Yes this is my opinion of parts and order of events.

The only color was from the grease. Not from being hot.
A clean rag wiped it to it's original color.

It was a 1 piece solid axle welded in the middle.
I think the washer and the length was my problem.

Thanks Snowman for the question.

Yes a live axle can be used BUT only if the original mower came with a live axle.

So if your mowchine came with a transaxle, then your stuck with a transaxle.

You may modify the transaxle or change one out to another transaxle.

The use of a thicker axle is fine for the safety aspect. so a kart axle would work IF you could stick one in a transaxle.

One more thing to add to my axle failure.  I installed a washer between my axle housing and my wheel tube.
I used bolts with a big washer on the outside to secure my wheel onto the shaft. The washer between the wheel and the tranny was to keep the wheel from running on the shaft tube seal.

This washer I have found actually cut into the Chrome Molly.  Just like a tubing cutter!!
Another lesson learned. Hopefully with my Not so Perfect plan someone else here can also learn and not make the same mistake as I have done.

The most important things I have learned about Mowchine's is......   Set up set up set up!
Weight ratios, tire pressures, seat position, braking, Steering and that is just the tip of the iceburg!

I would like a Kart style axle, But we can only run a transaxle or if so originally equipped, a chain to a rear axle.

I really like my 600. Seems like it will hold up to my driving habits.

That is why I used a cover tube over my axle to the tranny. I wanted the support. but you know it broke just inside at the bearing. I checked the bearing it is ok to run again.
I know what I did wrong just have to correct it now.

Give me a little time and I will post a pict of my new set up.

Really want to thank everyone for pointing me in the right direction!

Really don't want to have to go hunting for a 820 series.. then rims too!

Hey Louis,

The 600 has factory needle bearings installed.
I clean and repack mine with fresh high temp grease during assembly.

So Yes it's a better deal!

you see Last year I tore up shift keys. I read a lot here "HeyMow" and found out a 600 is a good tranny.
I picked up a few 600's Did more reading and thought that I would have it made running a 600 with Chrome Molly.

But test and tune always works best. Right?  But during a race is not the best time to find out your flaws in your perfect plan.

I have my tranny tore down and have been studying my 2nd perfect plan.
I have considered both long support arms for the axle. looked at shifting the tranny more right but still perfecting the plan. Even thought of a left side brake set up.  something like your showing crocco58

Yes Rocky, I run as if it was my last race everytime.  And more than 1 time last year I had a bent right axle!
Thats why the Chrome Molly this year.

I agree Rocky a minor enginering problem yet to be fixed. And you can be sure I will get er done!

So far I am happy with the 600.  Just have to get the axle part working and I will be off mowing grass!
This mowchine is a family thing and we have fun doing it!

Thanks to Don's mowtor skills it runs well.
If you make the picture "see rocky's post" larger you can see the right tire is still diggin!
Yes a lot of pressure on that dang axle!!

The side bars/ Nerf bars started showing up after a member was accidental hit.
His ankle was crushed! He now continues to race with us and does well.

So as a safety stand point nerf bars were permitted for driver safety.

We too push safety as a Major concern for both the driver and race fans as well.

As of this year front bumpers are not allowed. This has made our racing cleaner with less bumping.
So the pictures viewed may/will show front bumpers.

Yes I can run a tube for support. Most things that will make a build safer is ok.

I have 2 other 600's to work with. and 13 days to go.

I will look in to maybe putting the break on  the left side and supporting the right.

While I shift more axle to the left.

Yet another thought :tard:  I could build a spacer between the case and the long axle housing support!
Say a 1.5 inch thick piece of aluminum for a spacer??   or should it be steel?
I can make that and then use longer bolts into the case??
Then with a shorter axle  I hope to be fine.
Now tell me what you think.

One more thing to think about is the wiring from your battery to the solenoid and the starter!
Don't forget the Ground either!!  Make sure you have really clean connections and a number 2 wire would not hurt.
You can get copper ring terminals and solder the wires in the rings.

The ground is just as important. If you can, ground it to one of your motor mount bolts.

Hope this helps also.

This was during my build.

I need to stay with the 3/4 because of the tranny.
I have a tube covering the axle from the rim center up to the tranny. then the brake attached to the tube.

In the picture I was not finished but you get the idea.

Just thought I would include a picture. Because a picture is worth a thousand words but you know a picture takes more room on your hard drive  :P

Agree  most likely too much axle outside the housing.

Now I will move the tire closer to the housing and check the bearing.
I did check the bearing and repack it when I put it together.  also installed new lube.

I will move the left tire and right tire now so that I can get my Maximum width but not all my width on just the right.

Thanks for all your help guys!
Mow on mowing on!

All right I am learning here but "Good ol' steel"  won't that bend too easy?

I used to weld 2 axels together to get a wider right side Axel.
Put the weld inside the case.
picked up this 600 series and thought 1 piece chrome molly would last all year or more.

please give me what kind of "good ol' steel" I need to work with.

Thanks for the replies so far!
