Title: intec single
Post by: biker on September 24, 2018, 04:50:10 pm
I have an 18.5 intec single on a grass cutter. All stock never opened suddenly starts sputtering and stops. Will not turnover unless plug is pulled. Took it apart thinking some kind of compression relief problem. To my amazement the cam timing is 4 teeth of the crank mark. Can't see anything wrong. Any Ideas what caused this to happen?

It's not a valve problem I took the case apart and looked. The mark on the cam is 4 teeth apart on the crank. What caused it to get that way?

Good?
Retime it and start over

I can pill the cam and realign the timing marks, adjust the valves and put her on a test stand but I would really like to know why it jumped time in the first place.

No sir, the gear is I think 6 spokes. Definitely not solid.

Well I'm back and the motor will still not run right. I reinstalled the cam after checking the compression relief all is good. Then adjusted the valves to .006 exhaust and .004 intake with piston TDC. Engine turns good but only half starts and sputters. Fire on plug is blue and looks like a torch. When I try to crank I have raw fuel out exhaust and puddle in air intake. Do you think the cam has jumped again? I can open it up again but I'd like some ideas as what to look for.

Do you have a fuel shutoff valve?

It has no fuel shut off. I got it cranked and it would surge , sputter then surge again finally shut of and would not start.

You could have sheered the key for the crank gear. When you pull it apart make sure you pull off the gear to check.

If I read you right, there is some sort of pin on the crank shaft that holds the gear in place. I this correct?

A woodruff key holds crank gear to shaft

Really appreciate all the input. I have several things to do before I go into it again but I do thank you.
