Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Vanny Puller
« on: February 04, 2014, 01:31:08 pm »
Hey guys, I have a couple of cubs that i'm building some 30ci vannys to put on. I want the them to scream and pull hard, the harder they run the better. I was wanting to know what all I can do to make my 16's pull hard between 8,000-10,000+ rpm. My can lift can on be max of .450 @ the valve. Then I have 30ci I want to make a 34ci modified with NO limits except the cubic inch. Looking for ideas please. I already have a Midwest steel flywheel and alot of head work done. All help would be appreciated, Thanks

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / titanium vs stainless valves
« on: November 06, 2013, 06:29:40 pm »
Can someone tell me the benefit to running titanium valves over stainless steel? I know titanium is lighter and don't require as much spring pressure but what's the performance advantage?

My cubic inch limit is 33ci which is a small block 16hp or destroke an 18hp. I can't use a 35hp block with a 30hp crank. But I did make a few calls and talked to Mike Edwards at Precision cams, they have a can 355 that would be good for pulling. He said I could turn around 8,000-9,000 rpm or more. Still need some advice for flywheel and other parts if anyone can help.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Vanny Puller

Hey guys, I have been pulling for 8yrs or so and all I have dealt with are Kohler engines. I have a couple commands pulling around 9,000rpm and I have decided that I would like to build a BAD vanny. It will be modified and my only rule is it can't be any more than 33-34 acid. I build a altered motor once with stock parts till it flew apart. I already have a set of billet push rods and .100" longer rods and a set of stock lenght billet both from Al hodge. Here is my deal. He is a good guy but I want something that is gonna be a ground pounder and turn some serious R's. Who would be the best to get a cam from and other parts? Thanks in advance.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: More torque on Vanguard 18hp
« on: March 04, 2009, 02:24:24 pm »
The best thing for torque if u are not going to do any other mods is bigger valves to breath better, port and polish your heads and look into bigger cam. I'm a puller and i run a vogel regrind cam and it has a 301lift-238dur. and it performs well for me. I also run the same grind in 2 commands and all my motors turn between 7000-7500rpm's. 8)

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: head gasket issues!! :-(
« on: March 04, 2009, 02:12:09 pm »
I know how you feel cause i'm a puller and run a use to be 23hp vanny and i can't keep head gaskets on it for nothing. i started it up the other day and blew both of them at the same time. I took a use to be 38ci and made it 40.9ci, put 30mm 16hp heads on it and milled time down between .050"-.080". Does anyone know if someone makes cooper gaskets for these things? any help would be helpfull. :bash:

Garden Tractor Pulling / Re: motor help please
« on: March 04, 2009, 01:53:57 pm »
I'm not real hip on specific motor specifications and how to figure such things although I have read a lot on the forum. What are your opinions on the type of motor to use given the rules included below. Leaning toward a command but im not really sure what would be the best. whats the best ci. I could get out of a command .030 over?

thanks in advance for your help.......

1.   Engines may be 1 or 2 cylinders, not exceeding 50 cubic inch from the OEM.  Single engine only, multiple engines are not allowed.  Single cylinder engines are allowed to bore and stroke to 50 ci.

2.   Must have garden tractor type carburetor, 1.2” maximum venturi.  Maximum 1" carburetor standoff is allowed.

3.   Cylinder must not exceed 0.030 over original bore diameter.

4.   Stroke must meet OEM spec for that engine.

5.   Porting and polishing allowed.

6.   Stock valve diameters only for block being used.

7.   No aftermarket blocks allowed.

8.   Heads must be OEM stock.  Head modifications are allowed.

9.   Gasoline, diesel or alcohol.

10. Exhaust may be modified.

11. Engines may be changed.

12. Engine RPM may be modified.  Over 4000 rpm requires steel or billet flywheel with minimum 1/8 inch steel or 1/4 inch aluminum 360 degree shield.

13. Camshaft modifications are allowed.

14. Engines must be naturally aspirated.

Hey there. I run two kohler commands and a briggs vanguard. My commands run strong, one is a 38ci motor and is legal for what you are saying here. The motor is bored .030" over with JE flat top pistons and mid west supercub billet rods. The heads have been ported and polished with the intake valve in the intake and exhaust. We shaved around .050" off the stock heads and running a 2 barrel carb. We bought stock adjustable pushrods and solid lifters. Our motor turns around 7000-7500rpm's, plus we have a steel adjustable flywheel from midwest also.
