Can someone tell me if the 28 briggs has dowel pins to locate the head?I tore my motor apart over one year ago and now i am finally building it and don't remember any dowel pins. I see that there are two holes where it looks like dowel pins should be.Gary

Briggs Flathead / Starting help
« on: May 23, 2010, 12:05:01 pm »
Hi Guys, I just finished building my first 28 briggs flatty racing engine and am having trouble getting it started. It has a 28 head and a precision 246 cam with walbro adjustable carb. It turns over untill it hits compression stroke then stops. I back it up and it will occasionally fire then stop before it hits compression stroke again. It turns over great without spark plug in it.It is the bigger of the stock starters but is not the nippodenso starter. What i need are some rough settings for the carb mixture screws. I currently have the stock flywheel key in it to try to minimize starter kickback because of timing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Gary

Briggs Flathead / 28 cu.in. racing engine build questions
« on: May 06, 2010, 09:34:21 pm »
Hi all, I am in the process of putting together my first racing mower engine and have some questions. Do you need to modify the chamfer on the ARC weights to get them to fit flat against the crank? Mine do not sit flat and i have approximately .075" gap between oil pan and block.Does the oil groove on the avs piston go towards pan or towards flywheel? I purchased a precision 246  cam from george h. and i need the specs as far as intake centerline and valve lash settings. Any help would be greatly appreciated. You can pm me or email me.Thanks Gary
