'Nother AP Question...
Post by Squidd on Jul 11, 2005, 8:39pm

Researching the AP class...

We don't have many running here at present, so not enough to determine the "best" chassis layout...

I've seen front engine, mid engine and rear engine layouts...

The local "boneyard" at present, has three or four rear engine chassis available and I'm wondering if I should snag one up or wait for a mid or small front engine chassis to become available..

Weight ratio wise I would "think" a rear engine chassis with the rear axel slightly behind the motor and driver "centered" would have a good balance and decent steering charcteristics...

But the short mid engines also look promising as a "stepping stone" to FX...

Appreciate any opinions on front vs. mid vs. rear engine handling charecteristics....

Re: 'Nother AP Question...

OK, So I decided on the short mid engine chassis for next years ride...I'll build it for AP and then it'll be a "stepping stone" for the following years FX...

It's a early 60s "Rugg" with a 36" wheelbase and 24" width, had 7 hp Te"chump"sa on it and a 30" deck...

I thought I'd do a "Build up" series on this forum showing progress...

Unfortunately my computer died and I lost the "before" pics...(I got a computer dude hacking into the old hard drive, and hopefully I'll get them back)

So I'll start with the stripped down chassis...everything off and down to the bare frame rails...Being a "U" channel frame I "discretely reinforced" it by boxing the channel with 1/8"X1" flat stock...

In order to set rear ride height correctly, I had to "notch" into the frame...if I set the axel "above" the frame it would have been at 3 1/4" to ground (too low)and if I set it below the frame it would have been 6 1/4" (too high) As it is the frame is set at 4 1/2" above ground the finished machine with lower "racing" tire pressure should come in at 4 1/8"-4 1/4" above ground...Legal for tech...

After notching the frame I reinforced the frame (boxed) and welded on the flange mounts...

Then I built the front axel, using 1 1/2" X2" rectangular tubing...at 22" long it weighs in at a little less 1/4 lb. more than if I used 1"x2" tube and twice as strong in a forward "bump"...I used 5/8" spindles and carriers from ACME and welded them on with castor and camber set ...also set at 4 1/2" ride height.

Mower to come...

Re: 'Nother AP Question...

Rear axel 1" steel, Free spin bearings from ACME..Tires, wheels and hubs from Comet Kart...

Working on setting engine and trans will be facilitated by using "hollow" block for measurements. Motor plate removable for trans and chutch set up... I also moved the steering shaft forward for "head room" when I go to OHV next year and because being long and tall, I don't want to drive with the wheel in my "crotch"...

Being an old "transaxle" setup means I'll have to add to and reinforce the motor plate for the 700 series trans...

Another shot of front axel and relocated steering...

Here the body parts are set "loose" to check clearances and "discrete" fender mount adjustments needed...

Mower to come...

the Only thing I see is the sterring column must exit thru it's original hole in dash/hood if a prepared class mower. FX on the other hand is a different story. Everything else looks great. Good Job.

Re: 'Nother AP Question...
Post by Squidd on Sept 27, 2005, 6:10pm

OK...I can live with that...I can move it "back" an inch or so and still make the original hole (bump on hood) but just as far forward as the original hole will let me...

Good thing we caught it early...(another reason for "building it on the board here...) would hate to show up at the first race and be sent home...

Good "Eye" George...

Re: 'Nother AP Question...
Post by Squidd on Sept 27, 2005, 6:55pm

OK...That didn't take long...

I "clamped" the seat on with out the "seat spring" and sat on it....The wheel is not too bad, not as tight to my crotch as it was in the "stock" set up...

I can live with this...Looks nicer too... ;)

Re: 'Nother AP Question...
Post by Squidd on Sept 27, 2005, 7:02pm

I think once I ("discretely") move the fenders and seat a little closer to the rear wheels, I should be real comfortable...

Re: 'Nother AP Question...
Post by George Herrin on Sept 28, 2005, 7:18am

Very nicecly done, now if you intend on putting an ohv in it when I built my FX I heated the plate on front so it and column went straight up, then cut it off useing a swivel joint ran it back and still run it out the same original hole giving the wheel a more laid back look. Felt real good too. Go to www.geocities.com/georgenfive and scroll thru the pics Don't remember which page its on. That was 4 or 5 years ago. But again looking good so far, glad I could help.

Yeah, I saw your build up(s) on your web page, that's what gave me the idea to move the steering in the first place..

It's AP for this year, and when I do go FX we'll strip 'er down and "tweak" 'er some more...

Re: 'Nother AP Question...
Post by Squidd on Oct 1, 2005, 9:57am

Didn't get much done this week, Dang Job sucked up a lot of time... >:(...I'm not going to give up on Family Time or eating or sleeping, so I guess I'll have to quit my my job so I can dedicate more time to building my mower...

Yep...Sacrifices have to be made... ;)

The Axel and Spindles came with "Nylock" nuts and I wanted "castellated" nuts to set pre load...Went to the Auto parts store and they wanted over $4 a POP for them...that's nuts<<< ;)...So I got some 79 centers at the Hdwr store and a little work with the cut off wheel saved me $15...

Added 4" to the motor plate by "relocating" a piece of the running board to the back, filled the old "holes" and drilled in the pattern for the 700...

Also found a nice rear sprocket in excellent shape on one of the old mowers I stripped down, so I cut the center out on a lathe and drilled it to fit the sprocket hub...

Had to cut out the rear crossmember to fit the sprocket (and the brake disc, if they ever ship it) I need to replace it with something..was thinking a piece of 1/4" X 2" flat bent out over and back (kinda like this _/------\_ )

Re: 'Nother AP Question...
Post by Squidd on Oct 1, 2005, 10:14pm

OK, Have the clutch mocked up and set, final adjustments and belt selection will be made after I have a running motor installed...Due to closeness of engine and trans pulleys, I went with a single tensioner pulley and a couple "belt keepers"...if I need a second "V" pulley one one could be added to the tensioner mount.

Linkage to pedal goes in after plate is back on frame, pedal and rod are part of the frame...

Also cut a "notch" and reinforced for chain clearance and chain tensioner, which will be added when I get the final gearset...

I see this thread has had quite a few "views"...If anyone has any questions, comments or "pointers" I'd be glad to hear them...I'm no expert at this, I'm just plugging along doing what seems to make "sence"...

I don't have any questions or pointers, but I do want to say THANK YOU for showing us the details of your project.

I have dial up, as many people still do, as it's the only thing I can get here in the sticks. A lot of people when they post pictures tend to forget this, or simply don't have the time to resize the pictures to reasonable file size.

This thread loads within a few minutes, and is GREAT!!!

Keep it going, it's giving me inspiration, and hopefully soon I'll have something to ad. Right now the tractor used to mow the grass is giving me FITS! I can't worry about going fast until I can mow. LOL

Thanks again, keep up the good work.

Dale

Squidd,

What type of brakes you going to use. If it is a aftermarket need room for caliper and rear brake disc.
If going to use trans brake should be fine with current setup. Aluminum axle---watch for axle fles around sprocket area. May need support there if going to use a beast of a motor. Just what I see--also I agree with George/Dale--no expert here, but like what I see so far.

Hay mowracer;
Isn't a brake on the trans. a hazard by using the chain as link in brake system?? ???

Re: 'Nother AP Question...
Post by Squidd on Oct 4, 2005, 11:15pm

Hey thanks guys...Yeah, I've burned a few "sticks" in my time...Gotta love wire feed...

George...will "tack" one on shortly...after I do brake set up...Need the room for rear sprocket and Disk, but don't want the appearance of adding a "bumper"...

Mowerracer227...8" disk planned for "right" of rear sprocket (that's why I put the trans on the left)..I have the caliper..still waiting for the disk to show up..hopefully this weekends project... That's a steel axel, only 7" to each frame...still think I'll have "flex"...??
And yeah...a "Beast" of a motor IS planned... :-X

Pony...Yeah out in the boonies I have dial up too...(part of why I keep the pics small...for loading)...I hate that when you have to "scroll" across the page to read the text...

Hey Squid,

On those castled nuts you wanted. I'm not sure what size you need, but I was just cruising Manufacturers Supply, http://www.mfgsupply.com/GoMiniHardwareNuts.html/mv_session_id=8wn7ogYY
and found them for 23 to 75 cents. The largest they have is only 5/8" though.

Did you look at someplace like Lowe's or Home Depot? Quite often they have a rack of nuts and bolts.

Re: 'Nother AP Question...
Post by George Herrin on Oct 6, 2005, 11:25pm

squidd if an AP you will be using 6 inch rims and tires right. Ok an 8" disk may present a ground clearance issue on a rough track get bent and provide a frustrating DNF. A 6 inch disk is very sufficient for an AP or FX for that matter especially if using a hydraulic brake system. Also munt brake system outside the frame, you want to run 5 inch wide wheels (wide) on an ap so clearance will not be an issue. I havn't run AP but the fast guys are not using wide rims and tires I presume better performance with less HP. And look at this way more lbs per square inch meaning better traction. Just some opinions. Either way a 6 inch brake disk is sufficient. George

Re: 'Nother AP Question...
Post by Squidd on Oct 7, 2005, 12:20am

George... OK I hear you...got kind of the same situation with the 54 tooth gear (8 3/4")...

I already ordered the 8" brake disc, (hopefully it'll show up tomorrow), and then I can cut that down to a 6"...and then bust out the Visa and get a smaller diameter Sprocket ...like a 40 tooth...

That should leave me room to stay with the stock rear crossmember...Kinda kill two or three birds with one stone, so to speak...

Red Horse...I'm sure there are "cheaper" places to get castellated nuts...(could have had Mc Master send some out with my last order...)
Point was more the McGiver/Self suffeciency, Do it yourself thing...Kinda like, let's say it's late Friday night, your getting ready to hit the road to make the race tommorrow, and your missing a nut (or bracket or "clip" or what ever)...and you remember this thread and "make one yourself"..and your ready to rock and roll...

Re: 'Nother AP Question...
Post by Squidd on Oct 7, 2005, 10:05pm

Well, hopefully I can catch you guys tonight...
I got 'er tacked up and plan on welding 'er together tomorrow...

I got the 8" disk and cut it down to 6"+/- and mounted it and the caliper "inboard" (just because it was an "easy" mount) and then switched the 8 3/4" sprocket for a 6 1/2" 40 tooth aluminum...

That ment I didn't have to "bump" the rear cross member out as much for clearance (and make it look like a "bumper") and will still be strong enough for "twist" control...

I'm thinking this should pass "tech" as a "discrete" frame reinforcement, but I'd like to hear your "opinion" George...not sure what else I can do and still clear the sprocket and disk...

Here's a quick shot showing the old crossmember...as you can see i'm not any further out or "obtrusive" than the original piece would have been and it gives me the clearance I need...

Well...back out to the shop to finish up the fender and seat mounts...

Later..

Oh Squidd, I never intended any disrespect on your make do fix. I do them all the time.

Maybe I should been more clear. My referral was more intended for reference for anyone found wanting for castellated nuts, who also had the time for them "come in."

I'm enjoying this thread immensely. Just tonight in trying to remove the stock pulleys from the transaxle and engine, which of course seemed to be permentently bonded on, I came up with an idea.

I drilled three equally spaced holes around the pulleys and used a harmonic balancer puller to pull them off. Worked much better than the three-jawed pullers I've always used in the past only to wind up totally destroying the pulleys.

Theoretically, these pulleys should still be usable. But did I take pictures??? Heck no! Never occured to me until just now.

Keep up the good work.

Red Horse, No offence ment, none taken...Good job on the pully/puller, I trashed a few myself (as well as transaxel wheel/axel/shafts) a good puller sure beats "Heat and Beat".. ;D

For all you "enginering" types...

I'm going to be setting up the steering linkage soon...

Direct steering, Center link, both shaft link and spindle links are on the same plane..

Choices are:
"A" common pin, one up one down...difference of tie rod angles
"B" common pin, both below (or above)...difference of tie rod angles
"C" seperate pins, possible "ackerman" offset, tie rods on same plane.

Any preferences and "why"...??

Oh yah I rember my last heat and beat I was takeing a pully off a transaxel heat and beat heat and beat then I broke the input shaft right off the case I had to make a trip to the bone yard. I found my puller worked great to remove the pulley from the shaft I will never make do that again....

Re: 'Nother AP Question...
Post by Squidd on Oct 9, 2005, 5:53pm

Ok...I know I spent WAY Too Much time on this part, and there are easier ways to do this...but...

I was able to "blend" and mold a running board/foot cup into the mower deck, as far forward and low as I could go, to get the most "leg" room on this "mini" machine...

Mower deck set 1 1/2" below frame, should come in 2 3/4" above ground when complete...

All edges ground round and smooth under machine...

Any thoughts on the steering linkage...?

I'm thinking of going with option "C"... so "inside" tire turns further (tighter) than outside tire..

Re: 'Nother AP Question...
Post by moweracer227 on Oct 12, 2005, 8:19pm

Squidd,

I use the option C on all my mowchines. I also tilt my U-shaped bracket in at the top 10 degrees (neg camber) to speed up weight transfer during turning. Castor is normally set around to around 3-7 degrees depending on driving style, or what is best for current setup. U-shaped bracket angled back at top side. The other thing I do is drill three holes in each spindle arm were tie rods bolt for ackerman adjustments. Sounds like alot of work but once it is set/adjusted handling is far more superior. Still need to check periododically for adjustments. Toe-In at 1/8th inch.

Moweracer227

P.S. No don't think you will get much flex with only 7 inches there.

Re: 'Nother AP Question...
Post by Squidd on Oct 13, 2005, 3:17pm

I think you have your castor and camber definitions mixed up but I hear you on the angles...

I set the castor (top of king pin "back") at 13* and the camber (top of king pin "in") at 1 1/2* and 3 1/2* L&R respectively...

I went a little higher on the castor in case I try taller tires in the rear...(although I'd prefer to keep the chassis level)

I had originally set my IMOW castor to 10* relative to the axel, but when I welded the axel in an 1 1/4" higher and got the tallest tires I could on the rear, I ended up with only 3*-4* after the chassis "raked"...(hint for imow guys)

Gonna do a couple cardboard and coat hanger "mock-ups" (check linkage angles) before I do any cutting, drilling and welding, but option "C" it is...

Re: 'Nother AP Question...
Post by Squidd on Oct 15, 2005, 9:24pm

Glad I went with the cardboard and coat hanger befor I fired up the welder...Had to adjust the layout a couple times to get the ackerman effect I wanted...

First time up the outside tire turned tighter than the inside...

Final layout...shows angle of outside spindle...

Same angle on "inside spindle: shows 7* tighter radius...

Heres the final centerlink and angle of tierods...tomorrow I can drill and tap the rods and bolt in the balljoints...

Here's the (almost) finished frame...

Just need to figure out a clutch pedal and linkage that will be quick and "convienent" to reach with my foot wedged in the boot cup...and a battery box...

Then a clean, sand, prime and paint..

Hey, and I want to thank all you guys for watching over this project thru the build up ...and all the suggestions hints and tips ...made a few changes as we went, stuff that "might have" caused trouble down the line, if I went ahead and built this blindly in the back room...

I do have a few more steps to go yet, I want to do another "pre assembly/mock up" to check linkages, cables, exhaust, body panels, chain guard, seat mount, tach mount, tank mount, switching...

Holy Smokes...I got a LOT more work to do yet...before I paint...

As a side note, an interesting development came up this weekend...My 13 yr old "Daughter" showed an interest in the Lawnmower build up and even in the possibilty of "Racing"... ;D

So I pulled out what was going to be my "back up" AP a 40" front engine mowchine that's already set up with "chain drive" trans and axel, just needs to be widened and lowered...and set her to work on it...

Could be one of the first "J/P" mowchines in our LC area....We'll have to see how this one develops...Could have a new "Racing Buddy"... ;D

OK...Been awhile since an update...

Haven't been working on the mowchine as "intensely" as before, but still plugging along..

Been doing the "little" things that seem to take the most time...

Have the chain Tentioner installed, but not adjusted yet, still need change the drive sprocket to the correct ratio, then shorten the chain to fit..

And the seat down low and back for legroom, but still my butt is centered "forward of the rear axel slightly for better weight distribution on a short wheelbase mowchine...

Also have the clutch linkage and pedal installed as well as the trans "shifter...working on the battery box at present...

Will get pics up soon...

In the meantime, been helping "Sami" (my daughter) build her mowchine...

She has been doing ALL the work, from drilling to cutting to grinding to bolting...I just kinda watch , advise, and show her the correct tool and technique...

Axel raised/frame lowered, widened wheelbase, stripped mowchine to bare bones, and had a "Blast" with the pressure washer cleaning it up..

I'll probably weld up the front axel, but she'll set the castor and camber angles... 8)

Sid looking like a pro builder. Was looking back over your post/pics. On your spindles get some 1/8 or 1/4 inch flat bar lay in the tie tod arm pocket weld it in and re-drill your tie rod holes. The arms bend real easy if in a wreck or clipping a bail. Gotta be there at the end if ya want a chance at the all treasured checkered. Also I noticed that the axles where welded to the king pin barrel are round headed. Not square as a bolt. Those have been bending very very quickly and easily. What size axles you get. You may want to consider cutting them off awelding a grade 8 bolt as a replacement axle. Been there several times over the last two rears. I have started using the spindles For Jr dragsters, Come in kit form from ARC or EC where i work. Use 1/2 inch ball bearings for king pin much easier steering. Arc axles are not very long But at work we have some longer ones. Much better set up. And won't bend one.

My original plan was to "build" the spindles and carriers with bearings and bolts, just the way you described, but I opted to go the "ready made" route to keep costs and time down...

It is just an AP after all and I figured I'd bump it up a notch on the next one...

But, as I go along I can see the weak points as well...I am planning on "reinforcing" the tie rod arms for now and will keep an "eye" on the spindle/axel for tweaking and replace if/when needed...at that point go the full bearing route.

Axel is basic 5/8" straight bolt and if I'm going to go thru the trouble of cutting and replacing the axel, I might as well do the whole carrier...

But at "that" point I think I'd do the 3/8" plate/ 5/8" ball ends, fully adjustable (castor/camber/wedge) setup...and the 3/4" X 5/8" stepped axel/bearing/hub route.

Post by: mightymowe on January 02, 2006, 02:57:22 pm
Hi Squidd, I was wondering about your chassis. I have one very similar and when I welded the flat bar into the bottom for reinforcing I used some of the tried and true methods of limiting warpage( make a weld about 1/2" long and then start 1/2" away and weld back into my first weld)but I still got a pretty good crown in my chassis (about 1/4").Its pretty even on both sides so I think I will leave it. How did yours turn out? The only thing I was thinking was that I could weld the motor plate on solidon the top and see if the welding on top would pull it back.

Post by: George Herrin on January 02, 2006, 03:02:37 pm
I have found on the huffy style channel frames when welding the flat bar alojng the bottom weld 1/4 beads every 1/2 inch apart. alterante sides when doing so. This will keep much heat out and also it will be plenty strong enough. I did this on my FX and also on a couple other chassis I built for others, Got no warpage and I did the same in welding the motor plate on.

So probably if I weld the motor plate on the chassis, the frame will pull back straight. Would you also put a crossmember in the chassis for a little less flex.
Title: 'Nother AP Question...
Post by: George Herrin on January 02, 2006, 05:50:41 pm
I wouldn't I built my huffy/fx 5 years ago. When it was 2 years old I kart wheeled it app. 12 feet high in the air, it didn't bend anything except a steering arm. Once you have the motor plate welded on which by all rights should pull it back the other way some if not completely it will be strong enough. Just my opinion. Once you have the bar welded on the bottom of the frame and weld the front and rear cross members on don't rely on the bolts to hold it she won't flex.

To prevent "warpage" I did short welds (mine were about 1"-1 1/2") alternating sides/middle/ends,inside and then outside, left then right, etc... but I think the trick is to have a wet (water soaked) rag handy to "douse and cool"  inbetween runs...

The warpage comes with the build up of heat and "Slow" cooling (which also makes the frame "softer")...The wet rag and quick cool will minimize warpage and leave a tempered/hardened stiffer chassis..

Couple new things from the shop...

I went to "reinforce" the steering knuckles as George had suggested...

1/8" X 1" flat stock cut to fit and welded in...when I took them apart I did notice one of the tie rod "tabs" had already been bent !!!

I also wasn't too thrilled with the slop in the poly bushings it came with...So I went and picked up some brass bushings...

I had to drill the sleeve out to accept the thicker bushings (finely found a "use" for that 23/32" drill bit I had laying around.... )

Then line bore the inside to a straight snug and smooth fit on the King pin...

While I was at it I drilled, tapped and added grease zerks to help keep things smooth...

What I though was a "deal" at $28 a pair ends up almost as much as some of the better steering sets I've seen and I still have the "generic|" axels...

Next time I'm buyng the good stuff and be done with it...

But for now, I'm pretty happy with the upgrades... 8)

While I was "up front" I added hood mounts, solinoid mount and welded in the battery box...

Little weight up front, low and slightly to the left is a good thing..

1/8"X1 flat stock "secures" the battery...no lose battery flopping around in an accident (God Forbid)

1/8" aluminum diamond plate covers the chain and sprockets in the rear...

And I have the shifter lever set up to "lock" in third after starting line upshift...

Rules state..."All exposed chains and sprockets must be fitted with metal guards, which will direct a broken chain downward"...

Which makes real good sense to me seeing how the chain is directly below me centered between my legs...

Title: overall width
Post by: mightymowe on February 03, 2006, 03:36:42 pm
Hi Squidd I was wondering what the overall width of your AP tractor is? Mine looks like it is going to be 34" outside to outside on the rims. Do most of the guys take it out to the max Width?
Title: 'Nother AP Question...
Post by: Squidd on February 03, 2006, 05:35:20 pm
We measure to the outside of the tire side wall (furthest point out) with a large "caliper" set at 38".... either fits inside or it don't...

Everyone that races "fits" inside the gauge..some rub tight to it, others have a bit of clearance to max....

Mine, with the current wider tire and wheel combo, comes right in at 37 3/4" outside...front- 37 1/4"...

I also have another set of front and rear tires that are skinnier, with a slightly different rim to center offset, that will come in around 36  and 36 1/2" F+R respectively...

Hardest part was the flange on the 8hp with the 1 1/4" pipe...Not much room for the mounting bolts, but carefull bending and a couple socket head bolts and we're in there...

Been a LONG time since I had to gas weld "inside" a pipe...

Bolted in the dash,  added a larger steering wheel (15" compared to 12" stock), and made a mount for the Digitron Tach...

In the mean time my sponsor provided a trailer...

It's an older 6'x12' job site trailer...(He upgraded, I got one of the older ones)

Price was right...Leave his lettering on the side and I could have it !! (Saves me from having to repaint the exterior!!)

Inside, Sami and I pulled most of the shelving and repainted the interior ...should be able to get 3 mowchines and a tool box in there...

O... IC!

Think positive, no one else will have a paint job likes your Randy! (o;?

Find something in color along the lines of a Dry Red Wine when selecting pinstriping paint.

Here this will help out if you find the colors you got there... give me a few minutes and I'll get you some hex colors, only problem is I don't know how you'll convert those when you get to the paint store, but we can find you Internet colors!!

I'm thinking of maybe haveing my grafics guy cut/copy the lettering in vinyl off the photo...
Title: 'Nother AP Question...

The font used there would be "Calligrapher" Randy.

If he doesn't have it, send me an e-mail address to mail it too and let me know what operating system he's using. I'll send a copy of the font to him with directions on how and where to install it on his computer. It's really not tough to do, just have to get him to the right file to drop it in is all, and that of course varies dependent on operating system.

Copy this and print it out as well Randy, these are the Drop shadow settings I used on the font. He may notice a slight difference in the shadow I used on Squidd across the back of the machine, there given font size and light I stepped Distance up to 2px and changed the angle to -159. Just to bring it out better. Oh yes... should he inquire I was using Adobe Photoshop CS

Cool....but I like the drop shadow better...

Been doing my stock cars and most other lettering that way...

I did notice a "little something" different with the Squidd..thanks for pointing that out, but I imagin in 3D (real Life) things will come out just slightly different than this "skewed" view...

He usually does a "mock up" for approval prior to printing, so I'll check that out...
Title: 'Nother AP Question...
Post by: mowdak1 on March 27, 2006, 03:21:34 pm
Yeah it's a little tougher to do it on a picture like that Randy, because you have only the light you have there, on any given part of that picture to work with. Sometimes you simply have make adjustments to make it pretty!

All of lettering has a touch of outer glow to bring it off the mower a little better, because the light isn't real bright. The outer glow's essentially a contrast adjustment when applied in that fashion. In real life you wouldn't have that, you'd roll it out in front of the garage where the light was better!  (o;?

Hey Shannon..

That's why I built it on the board here..no tricks no secrets...nothing a guy couldn't copy and give a little competition..(OK Fine...I "might" still have a trick or two up my sleeve.. )

Tires are going to start out as you see above...

13X6.5X6 on the rear and 13X5X6 on the front..

Then depending on handling, traction and "rolling resistance" I have a set of 13X4X6 mounted up to try on front...with the 13X5X6 on rear...(per some threads in the "tire" forum)

And if that don't work, I may try 13X5X6 all the way round.

I "think" the 4s and 5s are gonna be the ticket, but it sure looks cool with the big wide tires..

Gotta figure out my paint scheme first. I got half a mind to paint it back to the factory Dynamark colors, Gun metal grey on the frame and Tunnel, black fenders Red hood and Silver grill and dash. Although I'm kinda thinking the red might go Transtar Maroon... Or, maybe stick with the Grey Frame and Tunnel and make all the sheet metal Transtar Maroon.

We've repainted the mower at the shop to match the fleet with left over paint from the last truck that got painted, and ordered decals to match the trucks there as well, and it's actually a very nice color on a mower, I'm quite impressed! And, there's about a quart or so left! 8) But the grphics we're running on the trucks are white yellow and silver.

As for the gun metal gray, we believe we have a line on being able to do a baked powder coat on the frame for very little money! We're looking into it!!

Well I did get it all stripped down last weekend, down at the G-Team shop. But... the big guy said he had SEVERAL motors that had to go out this week! Seems there's a big race in Wisconsin or someplace. So I'm just kinda letting it sit this week for your and a few other guys sake! Don't need to be in the way, or distracting the motor guy at the moment!

Have to run talk to the folks at Stanton tomorrow about building a track, and we have a kid interested in building a mower over there that wants to visit as well, so that's going to wreck the afternoon there.

And, we have an FX to toss together before we get fired up on the AP. Need that one ready by June 12 for an exhibition run at the local speedway.

Soon as I get moving on the build phase, I'll get a few pictures up. Likewise, it's going to be one of the mowers highlighted on the G-Team chassis build DVD soon to be released. And, I'll probably put a slideshow together on the G-Team site with it as well.

Ummm.... I sent him a reminder last night! Sent links to pictures of your mowchines with that North Wiskota Racing Alliance on the hood, and told him I had to have a set made up for mine too!

He's been trying, but I've had him so dang busy he don't know which end is up! And, it really hasn't slowed down this year. He started saying along about the middle of January that all those orders for engines weren't a problem, it always slows down around mid-March, but it isn't slowing down!! In fact he just got an order for an Intek last week for a drag racing mowchine!

Told me if it doesn't slow down shortly, he's going to have to put me on the payroll this fall, and not designing web pages either, I'm gonna be wrenchin'.

Only had an hour to work on it last night...

Pulled the back up, switched the sheet metal and got 'er bolted back in...

Gonna do the final hookups tonight and should get 'er fired... 8)

Hopefully there are no "major" bugs in it..I know Don put a Lot of thought research and work into it to get everything to fit and clear and work...

But it is a "prototype" and there is a good bit of one up, first time stuff in it...

It's my job to push it to it's limits to see what it's capable of and document just exactly what it'll do and "when" (if) it blew up   ...

I'm confident we'll get some good useful runs out of it...and then push and push to really test 'er out...

Then the production units will benefit from the research and improvements if required...

OK ...race results after first time out with new mowchine....

But first the "long version"...

Friday.. got new motor buttoned up and runable... did some test laps and things were looking VERY Promising...more rpm and pull than my back up motor but  it seemed the carb was quite a bit "touchier" to dial in...

Saturday...Thing was a bugger to start.. pop pop pop spit vroom, spit pop pop vroom...vroom vroom vroom...

Once it was warmed up it seemed to respond to tweaking and ran well... Sami and I did a dozen Le Mans starts and 1/2 laps working out prestart technique... started well each time...

Then we ran a 1/2 dozen "practice laps" together to give her some side by side driving experiance...

Was running well and figured a little more break in and carb would start responding..So packed 'er up and ready for the track...

Sunday at the track... would not start...popping and spitting, trying, but not catching...

Wore out first starter gear...

Pulled crank nut, checked key (OK) tried more tweaking...changed carbs...got it to "run" enough to get thru tech (has to start so you can show kill switch works) back to pits for more tweaking..thought it was starting to respond...

Call for practice laps... no start stripped second starter gear..So no practice...

Changed gas, and filter, still no improvement spitting and sputtering..

1/2 hour to Race time....Time to make a decision...

Pulled 22 and put in backup motor...changed flywheel, because I borrowed out my back up magneto on the stocker..this time I set the clearance to 40 thou... heard that's the ticket for the aluminum wheel set up..??

Same carb and gas and fired right up...still on third starter, but this ones been spinning for awhile already...

Pull up to line, do the start, didn't rev high enough before dumping clutch and snuffed it ..Hit the starter again and stripped third gear of the day...So no heat run...

Down to my last starter... an old 8 hp unit with a lot of grass cutting behind it...

So I choose the "safe" route..Going to do a "neutral" start on the line and put in gear after it's running...definetly not the quickest Le Mans technique out there...

Had to start in the back 7th (missed heat) and did the safe start, still pulled on two off he line...

Then bang, hit third, squeeze the Go Lever and let's see what she'll do.. (Missed practice..Hope it Turns Left... )

Tried some inside and outside lines to see where she would respond...

VERY Happy with Chassis... handles well on inside and outside groove..everywhere but the "marbles" , but even there it was a controlled drift.. no spin, no push...

So after a couple laps to get comfortable, it was just a matter of picking off the leaders one by one..

Nice even field, no one was running or walking away from anybody...

Moved from 7th to 2nd before we ran out of laps...and the leader was in my sights...

Despite all the difficulties in the beginning, the race weekend was a success, Chassis handles well and once we get the bugs out of the 22  we can start doing some walking and running on our own... 8)

Two bolts on this side, two on that side, you get the starter..someone hand me a 1/2" wrench...

I was still applying tape to the terminals when they called us to the line...

be sure crank is locked in position where piston is top dead center. or 1/4 past. Then put the air to it and listen in carb abd exhaust. If she leaks that is your problem. Thats what it sounds l;ike to me!!!!

Been hearing some people have had problems with the 8hp ARC wheel and starter gear engagement...

I was haveing a bit of a problem myself...Wheel was "lapped" on well and seated as far as it should go before hitting the top of the block...

But still the stock starter would only engage 1/2 way on the teeth...Add a bit of compression to your motor and you end up with a box full of these...

Have also seen a couple guys go for the replacement metal gears for their starter or even the more expensive "high torque" starters (also with steel gears)...

Faced with the choice of replacing a $3 plastic gear occasionally or chancing stripping the aluminum teeth off the ring gear ($$$) I chose to modify  the plastic geared starter...

A Decent 12 hp or 14.5 hp OHV starter will turn over a high compression 8hp without "much" problem...My motor does have a bit of compression boost, so occasionally I do get a lock up or kick back on C stroke, but back turning the motor generally avoids that..

I "ovaled" the bolt holes 3/16" down in order to get full engagement on the ring gear...

Also note the top "bump| has been ground down so the repositioned starter flange does not bind on bottom of ARC wheel...

The aluminum flanged starters have a raised molded lip (near "left" hole as shown) that holds starter parrallel with ring gear that the steel flanged starters do not...

In new position this starter has full engage ment and shows very little wear compared to the amount of starts I have gotten off it so far...
(many more than I got off the handfull of gears above combined)...

Still going strong...

Ok besides the starter problem...(or in conjunction with it) I was having clutch problems...

Single pully system "sorta worked" most of the time, but short throw on linkage made it "touchy"...

(Older photo prior to linkage hook up..)

Hair Trigger clutch is OK when playing in the yard, and you have the time and ability to feather it and hit the "sweet spot"

But under race conditions and the run, skip, hop and start, clutch. go... of a LeMans start...I tend to get a little "heavy footed" and "snuffed it" a time or two on the line causing me great embarrasment and loss of position..

"Safe start" (start in neutral and shift in gear) would get me going, but takes too long for good track position..

So I switched it out to "two pully" twist clutch...Now same amount of pedal throw has twice the amount of belt grabbing tension and clutch is MUCH easier to control...

No more "snuffing it" on the line for me.. :D

I don't understand how the two pulley twist thing makes a difference. If you have a touchy clutch, don't you just need to change the pedal  to clutch ratio?

I can see how the two pulley thingy would be easier to set up because you  just rotate it more to take out more slack, but ultimately I don't see the difference.

Can you explain?

Wish I would have taken a picture of the "opperating" one pulley system I had before switching...

I am not saying the two pulley is "better than" a one pulley system, but in my particular case...(short distance between engine & trans pulley, short belt and short throw on pedal) it was more "effecient" to take up the slack with two pulley "twist" than to try to leverage the longer throw of the one pully setup...

IE: 1" of throw on pedal needed to be 2" of throw on the one pulley to take up slack...movement was "amplified"...(touchy)

With this two pulley system..1" of pedal throw =1" of pully movement but with two pulleys "twisting" I get 2" of slack taken up...and pedal "feels" twice as forgiving...
Quote
...don't you just need to change the pedal to clutch ratio? ...

Yes ..and No...

It's all about applied leverage..within the confines of (my) fixed parameters...Meaning, I could not change the "ratio" with out changing the system..I also have limiting factors on available pedal throw in that I prefer the short throw pedal, and do not want to have to move my foot 4"-5" just to get the clutch to work right...

On some other system/mowchine with a longer belt layout,  more pedal movement available, or less slack required for engage/disengagement, a single pulley system can work just fine...

Post by: George Herrin on June 18, 2006, 11:45:07 am
Best way I can explain the twist pull two pulley clutch is you can use a bigger belt than with a single, and with that give more slack when clutching wich gives a better clucth with simply slipping the belt and possibly flat spotting it AND it gives a better feel when releasing the clutch more control and not simply an in or out type feel. You can slip it more, so to speak and get a gradual launch or like in a lemans dump it and go but the dump with a twist pull two pulley clutch is still much smoother with some slippage (not as apt to choke the motor) when you are desperatly trying to get off the line quickly in a lemans start. I have used this two pulley twist type clutch from day one of my racing no matter the legnth of belt it has been a very effiecient and durable and forgiving setup.
Title: 'Nother AP Question...
Post by: Squidd on June 18, 2006, 01:00:20 pm
That's a good way of describing it George...

The difference in "feel" is night and day...

With the single pulley I had a bit of "drag" on belt which dragged down starter effeciency...with Two Pulley I have clean disengagement and free spinning starts...

With single pulley, engagement was "in/out" Pop a wheelie or snuff the motor...not much play for slippage , unless you "feathered" the pedal...(hard to do under race pressure)

With the Two Pulley system, engagement is smooth, gradual and yet solid... very "forgiving" is a good discription...

I had a two pulley system on my IMOW and liked it...Quick starts won a lot of races in that class...Thought I would try the single pulley on the A/P ....(Why..? Because I can... ) but not happy with results...so we change...

Same mowchine(gearing etc..) with different clutch system and again...difference is night and day...smooooth.. 8)

Dang, went and fell off my Mowchine again...

Dang hay bale went and jumped out right in front of me... :x (actually kinda hard to avoid when the tires ain't touching the ground, had a good dip and rise coming out of turn four...)

Fortunately I landed on my head, and no damage was done... 8)

Two pulley clutch works as expected, and a smooth start in the feature got me out to second...(seeing how I had to start in the back "again"... )

Power from the 22 didn't take long to catch the leader, follow for a few laps and position for a pass...

After that, it was all clean air in front and not much longer I had "breathing room" behind me...

Don Gienger built Briggs running strong at Fifield and Wausau..!!!

With a good start, I can lap traffic, but a couple of  times I ended up in back and had to work my way to the front...(still working on "quick start" issues)(edit: crap in the carb.. :x )

Had a white flag/last lap pass for win at Fifield heat, and 1/2 lap Win on Feature...

And a three wide "Drag" down the front straight for a "Photo Finish" Heat win  at Wausau...That's the kind of stuff that brings the crowds to their feet!! Feature win  not as Climatic....

One more for the 22 Special... 8)

Medford under the lights...Finely got the "starting" issues worked out. (crap in the carb, good cleaning and starts "almost instantly")

Went out for practice runs and belt seemed to be slipping...No Biggy, back to pits and slip on a new one...

Second practice still had the "slipping"...played with shift lever and found the "shift keys" were letting the tranny slip...

So...20 minutes before the first race I'm pulling the tranny and putting in the back up...Still tightening last bolt on chain guard as they call to the line...and the LC Pres says..."You gonna make it..?" I figure if it will pull from the pits to the line...I'm going out on the track...

Quick start gives me clean air,  a win in the heat and Poll position for the feature..

Quick starting also got me out front in the feature...and the bonus of "lapping" the field for the win.. (much easier than starting in back and having to work your way to front....)

I agree with the close racing George...but after my "starting" issues and the come from the back wins, I wanted to check my pace before Mi. races...

See, some of these "local" racers were there at Mendota...and on same lap as I...so after gearing, clutch, starting and chassis bugs have been worked out...gaining a lap lets me know I'm right where I want to be for MI...

Bring it to Nationals and he will have his good motor back on it by then. He blew up Saturday and kept looking over his shoulder to see how hard not to push trying to make it he weekend. Then slapped another on it for Sunday  a better one but still not the good one, and did what he had to do to win/finish. He had the motor figured out to a lap on durablilty. he blew it on the victory lap. Hence he pushed it to the pits. I am not taking anything from you or your motor, BUT as I have said before I have seen his go and doubt yours or anyone elses will ever make him break a sweat when he has his big motor on it. Just my obsevations. And congrats on your victory. To finish first FIRST you must finish.

Must be cause we're pushing it just that much harder...

Title: 'Nother AP Question...
Post by: Squidd on September 24, 2006, 09:43:36 pm
Been quite a year..and noticed I hadn't posted here for awhile...

So I'll try to recount the races with the good and the bad (like George, I had a few "set backs" as well)...starting with the Sparta Nats above...

Seems Things were going well (too well) after working the bugs out in the 22 from the first race, I had a string of Victorys...Even running Saturday at Sparta, a crummy start and still worked my way to the front for a win..

But then Sunday morn, getting ready for another shot at it I was firing up the A/P and she kicked back and ate a gear...No biggie, I just throw in a backup starter...(and this is where the "fun" begins... :? )

If you remember a few pages back, how I modify the starter bolt holes to get full engagement, and grind the "bump" off the top to clear the flywheel...seems I didn't grind "enough" off my back up starter and it was rubbing on the bottom of the flywheel...

So I slap in the back up starter and try cranking it over...It's turning slow and jerky and making all kinds of noise (besides draining my battery down)...

I grab the flywheel and try turning the motor by hand and feel this grinding/clunking and my mind blanks out..."I Blew My Motor after the feature yesterday...ARGHHH.."  :x  (at this point I wasn't thinking "starter" I figured the motor bound up on cool down the night before)...

Add in it's almost time to practice and I decide to pull the motor and run the back up...I drove all this way, I'm gonna run something...

So we pull the motor and install the back up with the same starter and it grinds and grumbles worse than the first..!!!

Now I'm really bumming..thinking I got TWO bad motors and their calling IMOW Heat to the line...I'm done for the day...Bummer...

So I figure I'll open the 22 to see what the damage is...and THERE AIN'T ANY..!!!

So I go back to the backup motor and spin 'er a few more times and start seeing this aluminum dust coming out by the starter... :o Now I know what it is, pull the starter sure enough...grind the hump down a bit more and reinstall...

Battery has just enough to turn 'er once or twice and she fires!! :D  I'm gonna be running !!! Put on  charger cause the battery is dead...

So the feature gets called and I get dressed and go to start...NUTTIN.... :x

Battery didn't take a charge after all that grinding and it ain't gonna start...

Now I'm really Bumming... Perfectly good motor tore apart in the trailer and back up won't start cause the battery puked...

Talk about your "setbacks"...

Oh well, at least I got a nice scenic 9 hour drive to fume over it on the way back...

Speaking of "setbacks"...

Hayward Wi... Coming off a National victory I'm ready to run...

Get out for the heat, starts well and run to the front...about 4-5 laps into it She starts sputtering and losing power...

Dang flywheel sheared the key (I must not of had 'er torqued tight after switching back from Sparta) so I pull off for a dismal heat finish...

Re Keyed and ready to run the feature...Again a good start (from the back) and out in front...

But then she starts stumbling when I let off the gass to enter the turn...clears right up when I squeeze the throttle so I go another lap or two..

Let off stumble ..squeeze clears up...

So I pull off the track to see whats up and see my carb hanging down by one bolt... :o

When I squeezed the throttle, the spring and linkage would hold 'er tight and she'd run, then let off and she'd fall loose and stumble...

Worst part was I sucked sand big time...gritted up the rings and lost all compression...

OK..another setback...

Only one week to Morris Mn. Nats...

I need rings,  I need them big time, I need them now...

Waiting and waiting for them to come...they don't show up till Thursday and they're the wrong ones...!!

Not enough time to re order, they are "close enough" to run, a little loose in the groves and  the end gaps a bit large (.018) but they'll work..

Fire it up Thursday and break in a little Friday and we're on the road...

Runs OK , smokes a bit, but I just want to get thru the weekend...

Here's a little key that has been bugging me all season...some starts are good, some just crank and crank...

This time, Start the heat quick, and pull to the front...but someone popped a wheelie and the red flag comes out...restart...

Second start...no go..crank and crank takes awhile to get off the line...what's up with that..???

Any way you probably heard of the rain we had in Morris...started pouring the second lap of the heat and turned the track to grease...

Slipping and sliding it was like running the slick track at the go cart rink... but it was all in fun..doing donuts and side slides...lead must have changed 10 times in 10 laps...

Had a 5th place finish, but heck thats still a good position for the feature...and I can get re-set to run a muddy track...

Cept we never ran the feature... :x Bigger storms came in and wherever we finished the heat...That was our finish...

Okie Dokie...we're having fun now...

That way works too, except the picture is lost after a specified amount of time on E-Bay... And, theoretically it's a copyright violation to copy it and paste it in here.

It is however, easier to highlight the text in your address bar, and paste that in your post as that will give everyone a live link to click. Usually if you just left click once in the address bar anywhere it will highlight everything therein, then you can right click on it and select "copy", or press ctrl and C at the same time to copy the address. (You can also hold the left button and drag it over the entire address to highlight it.) Then in your post here, right click on an empty spot and select paste, or press ctrl and V at the same time to paste it.

Link to Squidd's new Purple AP Seat here! (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140034608033&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.com%3A80%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll%3FMfcISAPICommand%3DGetResult%26ht%3D1%26shortcut%3D0%26from%3DR41%26query%3D140034608033%26category0%3D%26Submit%3DSearch%26fvi%3D1)

And, when you get that part figured out, you can put a little text in your post , highlight it and click the URL button above the box you type your message in here and insert the = sign and the link in there for the URL as in...

Your Text Here (http://paste link here)

And, it'll make one of them nifty little text type hyperlinks you see floating around here, like that one seen above.  Be sure not to put in a space afterwards, and if there is a trailing slash remove it, otherwise the link won't work...

i.e. - Your Text Here (http://paste link here ) or Your Text Here (http://paste link here/) won't work.

And, you're right! That would look really cool on the Squidd mowchine!

You need to ditch your friend Murphy.... LOL

That is why it is not easy to just even run good each week, much less get a win or a series championship.

Tell me about it...Haven't lost him yet... :x

After Morris, I had two weeks to get ready for Nationals...Plenty of time to get the "right" set of rings...Order Monday figure I'd see them Tuesday or Wednesday pop them in Thursday or Friday and have the weekend to "tweak 'er in for Nats...

But NOOOO... Check Wednesday..nuttin..Thursday...still nuttin...Call the dealer and find they're holding my order for some B.O parts...

"Well, Skip that..send the dang rings..."

Check Monday and they found "they" had the wrong rings too and had to reorder, won't see them till Tuesday I'll get Wednesday...and I'm leaving for Ohio Thursday...!!!

God, I hate this last minute schmidt...

The 22 "Special" (22 cu/in) moves right along at 7000-7200 rpm...

I'd "like" to think we're getting 1 hp per cu/in but that's tough on any flathead...

So without having it on a dyno I'd say somewhere in the 16 to 18 hp range... If Don see's this I'm sure he'll chime in with his guesstimate...

Randy I would be investing in a new piston for that thing this winter. I have worked on 4 of those 22 motors of giengers now where wrist pin has pulled out and trust me when I say there was nothing left to salvage... Best catch it before it fails..... or you will be starting from scratch.

Thanks for the heads up George, but I think we may have caught that issue earlier..

I have the prototype or first engine built and in that first season I tore it down and measured and checked everything between each race...

About mid season I did notice some slop developing in the wrist pin bushings and had them redone to tighten them up....

I had it apart again last year and at the beginning of this season and did not notice any new play issues.. so we may have corrected the initial problem...

Again this was the prototype, out for experimentation, and Don was aware of the wrist pin issue... I don't know if he changed anything in later models or if you have run across some of the earlier models.

I do plan on racing it this weekend in IL and I'm heading out of town tomorrow after work so I guess I'll run 'er as best I can, hope it continues to stay together and check er' again next week..

The ones I got there wasn't enough left of the piston to tell if there was bushing or not. Although I did find some crushed brass may have bee that not sure.... The pistons litterally were in millions of pieces almost as though it was a frozen glass and it simply shattered. Never seen anything quite like it in all my years, and like I said everything was history nothing was salvagable except the flywheel and tins.

Usually you would mount the caliper inside the frame because  it will stay partially protected from mud, water, etc.

New guy here. I have been following your build almost to a "T". I have the exact same mower, frame and all. But mine didnt come with the engine plate or the rear fenders, I dont know for sure if it did have fenders. I have seen some with and with out. I am trying to build as close to "AP" rules but with out haveing a sanctioned track close to me, I am going with a 12hp Briggs and a 90* gear box/ragb. Motor is stock for now and will race it stock until I get the funds/experience to race faster. I also have motorcycle hydrolic brakes and master cyclinder. definately need to stop faster....lol

My question is since I dont have the stock engine plate or rear fenders, will it be legal for "AP" if I decide to travel to a sanctioned race? I have looked at the rule book but unless I missed it somewhere it doesnt say exactly factory engine plate or factory fenders. it just states that the engine must be in original orientation and that it can be welded in as close to original position as possible. I am making mine out of 1/8th in plate and thinking of using modified trailer fenders for the rear fenders.

thanks.

If you check the rules you can use updated fenders and hoods. Like for say you have a old john deer. You can use newer john deer hoods and fenders. Also as long as you put engine plate back where first engine plate was its fine. Also you can use other flat head engines besides what came out with it just has to be 10hp or less. From what i read theres AP class running OHV now.

I seen where it said updated, but wasnt sure on who bought out rugg as to what kind of sister fenders I could use. but thanks for clearing that up for me. and thanks on the engine plate. I do have a 8hp briggs I can use also but read on here that the 12s put out more hp stock than the 8. might just have to build the 8.lol

I have my hood and grill mounted now and steering almost done. but I have some serious flex in the factory brackets that hold the steering column and the sides that hold the hood.

Squidd did you have any of these issues and if ya did how did you fix it? thanks.

read the rules better hoss if a US build sheet metal must be from same manufacturer. You cannot put deere metal on mtd frame ion other words.

thats what I was thinking. So if I dont have the original fenders do I just not run any?  Also do you by chance know how/if Squidd had any flex in his steering and if so how he fixed it.

You can put newer fenders from same manufactuer on it. As for the steering dont know.

but who makes a rugg anymore? I mean I know they arent made anymore.........lol
Title: Re: 'Nother AP Question...
Post by: Squidd on October 11, 2012, 04:43:17 pm
Rugg is out of business, but you can still find pieces laying about...

So you could concievably put on newer (or older) parts, used of course, to compleate machine...

Might have to do a litle looking and waiting...but they are out there...

Far as steering flex goes, there should be a 3/16" x 1 1/4" flat bar supporting the rear of the hood....It goes up from frame, ties to bearing plate (upper steering rod support) and back down to frame...

Between that and the lower "triangle" bushing plate on frame front, steering rod/wheel was quite solidly mounted....

Do you have all the parts that go with the hood/rod asembly...?

I dont have the stock steering triangle. maybe that is what the problem is. I do have the flat bars that go from in front of the engine plate up to the dash and then from the top to the grill suport. I may have to do it out of 1x1 square or 3/4x3/4 since I dont have the steering triangle.
